Munday Are You Ill?

How do you deal with illness in your stories? How often do your characters get sick, and in what ways?

What kinds of medicine are there in your world?

Lucy's only gotten sick a few times in prompts, and she basically deals with it by resting up and doing her best to get back on her feet as soon as possible. She hates getting sick because it leads to a build-up of muse energy in her, and she's worries that she won't be able to let it out safely. Medicine is basically the same as we have in our world.

I don't think anyone gets conventionally sick in "Secundus" -- though I do remember the prompt here where Victor got turned purple thanks to an unusual cold. XD Illness in Secundus comes in "natural" and "unnatural" flavors -- there's the regular colds, flu, and suchlike, and then there's stuff like Hogsfarb's Resplendent Immolation (from "Girl Genius") where you turn a rainbow of colors then burst into flames. In a world of mad science, it's only to be expected that certain diseases get warped into super forms, or are created wholesale to plague humanity. Fortunately, medicine in Secundus is a lot better than in the real 19th century, also as a result of all this mad science. They've already got some ideas for antibiotics (not anything complex, but there's a lot of soap usage at least), and there are some special remedies that can quickly bring down fevers, relieve congestion and cough, soothe sunburns, and all sorts of stuff. Scientists get sick too, you know, and they don't like losing work time to bacteria or viruses.

Of course, I haven't thought about all this in detail yet, mostly because when it comes to sickness, my characters deal with mental illness more often than physical one. Victor going Creative and having a major breakdown is a big part of the climax of "Secundus," after all. Psychology is a weird area -- they've made some strides in how to treat some mental illness, but it's still a period of trial and error. And they're still figuring out the ins and outs of stuff liked Atypical Scientific Neural Disorder. Right now, if you survive going Creative, it typically means you've got the right sort of personality to do so and/or a really strong support group (Victor, fortunately, has both, even if he does come dangerously close to the edge for a bit).
