Monday
It never fails. The moment people find out you are a writer, or aspire to be one, they feel compelled to tell you how difficult it is to become a writer. What are some of the most discouraging things you've ever heard about writing?
On the flip side, tell us something encouraging you've heard about writing. Or give us a piece of encouragement, yourself.
Finally, why do you still want to be a writer?
The only discouraging thing I have ever had anyone tell me was actually from my own mother who said "So few people actually get published and even fewer can live off it. You need to find a real job. I talked to the managers down at Walmart..." And then she got pissed when I left. Its like she thinks I want to get stuck working as a cashier my entire life.
On the flip side I have been told by many people, including high school English teacher, journalists, and fellow writers, that my work is very good and they all believe that I could one day publish a novel...I just have to finish one first...
I still want to be a writer because out of everything I enjoy doing it is the only thing that could make me money, and because there are stories out there that I know I want to read, but since no one has written them yet I have to write them myself.
