Friday Master Van Dort Shows Promise In. . .
You may be out of school, but that doesn't let you off the hook. If you were to be graded in the following categories, how would you fare? Give us an honest assessment. You may include explanatory comments if you feel they are necessary.
Writing: C+ -- I can write reasonably clearly, but I lack any real talent at it. I can write a story, it just won't interest people very much.
Science: B+ -- My main area of interest is lepidopterology (the study of butterflies), but I've grown to love all science here in Secundus. Doc says I'm a very competent assistant, and I've picked up quite a few things from my friends. I hesitate to give myself an A only because I'm surrounded by people much smarter than me.
Drama: C- -- I'm not an actor and never wanted to be. And in the realm of personal drama, I think I attract more than my fair share. Currently poor Doc and Marty have to put up with periodic intrusions from my parents claiming they've brainwashed me.
Art: A -- I'm not so humble as to not admit I have a talent for drawing. Everyone agrees with me. I do mainly ink and pen drawings, though I occasionally like to dabble with paints.
Music: A+ -- see above. My chosen instrument is the piano, which (according to at least two teachers) I have a natural talent for. I've always loved music, and I make sure to try and play as often as I can.
Phys Ed: A -- Marty says I should go ahead and give myself an A for this, given all the running around I do for him and Doc. It comes from years of practice. And I suppose my excellent tree-climbing abilities deserve an A as well.
History: B -- I know my history pretty well, though the past has never held too much interest for me. I'm rather more interested in the future. I do have to say that Doc's work on the time machine has made me more keen to learn about it, though. As for learning from my mistakes -- I do my best.
Conduct: B- -- Doc says I should rate myself higher, for being a good assistant and friend, but. . . I already feel I'm inflating the grade a little. I do try to be polite and gentle, but I sometimes manage to say exactly the wrong thing at the wrong time, or do something that offends people. And I'm not that good with social interaction outside of my small group of friends. Not to mention the disappointment my parents feel in me. . .
Personal Growth and Development: B -- I feel like I have grown a lot since coming here. Before, I was more or less -- I don't know if "content" is the word I want. "used to?" Maybe -- used to being the son of the rich fishmongers. I let my parents dictate my life, and I didn't have any friends. Now -- now I'm doing things for myself. I have a job, a place to life, a social life -- goodness, a life in general. I'm finally out from under my parents' thumbs. I know I've still got a ways to go yet, but -- I think I'm on a good path.
