Monday - Writing Buddies

1. Do you have writing buddies?

No, though I feel it would be nice to have some. I have had a couple of friends in the past that I would run stories ideas by, who generally took my ideas very well and were very encouraging, but no one that I would definitively call a "writing buddy". This can make writing a bit of a lonely endeavor.

2. How did you meet each other? Do you interact in person or over the internet?

My best friend from middle school was one of them. We met in band while in parade formation. She was more interested in drawing as her personal artistic medium so she never got into writing with me. She did make me a better artist though so that was cool. We don't talk anymore.

The other is a girl I met just this year in a creative writing class. She is ridiculously clever and a very good writer herself. We chat through tumblr and email now.

My boyfriend. I met him on the internet and we still communicate mostly through the internet.

3. What kind of support do you give one another? Beta reading? Late night chats about plot? Writing parties or word wars?

My creative writing buddy I've bounced a couple of ideas off of, and she has done the same with me. I even managed to inspire a story out of her with one of my suggestions. It was nice. I asked her to beta a piece I intended to turn in to the class for me once and she was good at pointing out some questions that might arise from the narrative that I should probably fill in.

I force my boyfriend to read everything I write (well I say force...) and he's very supportive and good at catching most grammatical errors. However, he's rarely got any sort of opinion on the atmosphere of a piece, the believability of the characters or their situation, narrative holes, wordiness, basically anything I really need for the editing process, which is a real shame.

4. Do they write the kind of stories or the same genre as you?

Creative Writing friend writes quite differently from me. I am fantasy fiction oriented she is more science fiction oriented. She writes more in the vein of Issac Asimov while I am forever chasing the glory of Tolkien. She also has this tendency to write in the present tense which makes me die a little inside because I am a staunch believer in writing in the past tense.

5. Have you ever collaborated on a story?

No. I gave her an idea for a story which she then executed and she's helped me with detailing in one of my stories, but we didn't collaborate.
