Vampire short

I joined a new community ( genworks which gives you a writing/art prompt using a random generator every week. This week's was vampire stories... I did a story and picture for it (still trying to get better at art).

This was the challgenge:

Things That Randomize In the Night!

Use the Vampire Namer at http://www.seventhsanctum.com/gens/vampnamer.php to roll up ten names in whatever category you want.

Take one name you like, and create a vampire with it.

WRITERS: Describe this vampire's appearance, chacteristics, and history, up to 1000 words. Alternately, you can do a short story with them.

ARTISTS: Produce a picture of the vampire you've come up with in your medium of choice.

Of course, feel free to do both!

Here's what I came up with:

My vampire:

Rosetta Blackman

Short Story: Sunrise in Vegas

The bright neon lights of Las Vegas lit up the city in a sort of artificial sunlight that those condemned to walk the night had a certain appreciation for. Certainly, Rosetta Blackman felt the irony as she paused under the gaudy rays of a crimson and yellow solar display over the Sunrise Palace Hotel and Casino. Rosetta had been working the night shift as a showgirl here for the past ten years. If the owner, kindhearted Benny 'The Weasel" Weiseman, noticed anything suspicious in the fact that Rosetta's good looks never seemed to fade with age- he probably only thought that she had a good plastic surgeon. Wasn't as if she was careless like some of sin city's lower class bloodsuckers. They fed indiscriminately- plucking off wealthy gamblers after a big win to enjoy their spoils and spend the money like water on various sadistic pleasures. Rosetta was different than that... she couldn't distance herself from humanity enough to prey upon those who did not deserve it. She fed primarily upon criminals and con artists- particularly the kind that suckered in those nice little old ladies, married them for their money, then bumped them off. Rosetta liked little old ladies... after all, she'd been raised by one.

Her parents had been well-traveled archeologists- always going from one dig to another, sending home exotic gifts.. but never spending much time there themselves. They'd named their only child Rosetta Stone-Blackman, after what they considered to be the greatest archeological discovery of all time. They'd left the child in the care of Iris Stone, Rosetta's maternal grandmother. Iris was a loving woman, and Rosetta never thought to miss the parents she hadn't known. Rosetta showed a great talent for dance at an early age, and was fascinated by her grandmother's stories of having been one of the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall during her youth. Rosetta took many dance classes, and after highschool, bid her grandmother goodbye and left her suburban Midwestern town for the bright lights of Vegas.

She'd tried all the major casinos first... and had been summarily rejected from all of them. Sure she could dance, and she was pretty enough- but there were far more experienced dancers and no openings. Rosetta found her sparse money running out- and was forced to turn tricks just to make ends meet. During one of those nights when she was walking under the bright neon lights of the very casinos that rejected her, she saw a dark stranger in a trenchcoat, watching her from the shadows. Supposing that he might be a policeman, she took off and started to run. The man kept pace with her easily, following ominously. In her fear, Rosetta ran into a dark alley.. and with nowhere left to run, she turned around to face her pursuer.

The man approached, speaking soothing words in a voice as smooth as velvet. "I'm here to help you, child..." he whispered, and without knowing why, Rosetta trusted him. "My name is Raul... I'm going to take you home." Wordlessly, she nodded, and followed Raul as if in a trance. The struggle with life on the streets had been long and hard... and what else did she have to lose? Even death would be welcome at this point...

Raul explained to Rosetta of his true nature as a vampire... and sired her that very night. She was enthralled by the preternatural strength and grace, and joined him willingly in stalking through the streets and preying upon the dregs of humanity that would seek to harm others. Through Raul, she met Benny and got a job at the Sunrise Palace. For ten years, she continued on in this manner... until one night... vampire hunters burst into the couple's apartment. Raul was staked- and Rosetta barely escaped with her life. Weak, injured, and frightened... Rosetta came to the only place she could for help... the Sunrise Palace. Under the bright light of the neon sun... she paused... and wondered how to tell Benny, where to start... wondered if she'd ever feel safe or warm again.
