My day with Uncle Leon
My Uncle Leon and Aunt Marie came over to have lunch with me and mom. Now, for those of you who don't know- Uncle Leon is my favorite Uncle. He's also the most like me in the family- intellegent, outspoken, weird, charismatic, and just a bit, well, shady. He was a teamster back in the Jimmy Hoffa days. He's around eighty, now- but still sharp, and very fun to talk to.
We were talking about the war (which I don't generally talk about, but because I love Uncle Leon, I conversed with him about). He asked me if I remembered my medieval history, and we spoke for a while about the crusades. He likened Sadam Hussien to a modern day Saldin (sp?) , and George Bush and Tony Blaire as Richard the Lionheart type figures. He pointed out several examples of why this is similar- including the big sword Sadam is seen brandishing, and the leadership styles of Blaire and Bush as being monarchian, holy-crusader types. This is our modern holy crusade, he said. He believes that we are in this war not only for the reasons commonly stated, but because of the threat Iraq would pose to Isreal if it had the weapons it may be building. He says that we are fighting for our 'holy land', same as in the crusades. In a way, I can see his reasoning. He also said that history is a cycle, and we're returning to that same type of time period, where we had Moorish invaders (terrorists, now) striking on our home soil- and retaliated with an attack to a far off arab land, to reclaim a bit of lost glory.
I've probably not stated this as eloquently as he did, but it made a bit of sense to me, or at the very least, it was the way he said it. He also spoke of Arthurian Legends, and the knights of the round table... and... well, it was a very interesting day. I was also quite flattered to hear from him that I am 'young' still. He said that no one would think, to look at me, that I am 32. I appear, so said he (and Aunt Marie agreed) to be in my early twenties still. They say that it's not only the fact that I don't have wrinkles or bags, and have just that one streak of silver in my hair that I've had forever- it's that I still laugh with my eyes, and that when I'm happy, everyone is happy with me.
That made me proud.
