The chargeback scheme is simply the parameters that must be followed by all parties involved in the chargeback process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Governments generally mandate that card networks implement some sort of mechanism to fight invalid credit card charges, and provide a road map for banks to follow. The different players in the process, however, have a little room to tweak the specifics. That\u2019s the way the word is used when we\u2019re talking about a chargeback scheme; an organized set of rules and procedures for filing a consumer chargeback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The term \u201cchargeback scheme\u201d is used predominately in the UK. In the US, however, banks and card brands are more likely to say \u201cchargeback process\u201d or \u201cchargeback system.\u201d The core idea is still the same though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"c-category-alert c-category-alert--red\">\n    <span class=\"c-category-alert--red__icon\">\n        <object data=\"https:\/\/chargebacks911.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/reminder-hands-01.svg\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\"><\/object>\n    <\/span>\n    <span class=\"c-category-alert--red__heading\">IMPORTANT!<\/span>\n    <p class=\"c-category-alert--red__description\">A chargeback is a payment card charge that is forcibly reversed by an issuing bank, typically after a cardholder claims a transaction was the result of fraud or abuse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the Chargeback Scheme?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<dl class=\"definition_box\" class=\"wp-block-cb911-block-library-definitions\"><div class=\"definition\"><div class=\"definition_top\"><h3><dt>Chargeback Scheme<\/dt><\/h3><p>[noun]\/charj \u2022 bak \u2022 sk\u0113m\/<\/p><\/div><dd><p>The chargeback scheme is a process that permits cardholders to challenge credit and <a href=\"https:\/\/chargebacks911.com\/visa-debit-chargeback\/\">debit card transactions<\/a>. The cardholder can use these chargeback scheme rules to recover funds lost due to fraud or merchant abuse.<\/p><\/dd><\/div><\/dl>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The body of practices that make up the chargeback scheme is a product of both government mandates and steps taken by individual banks and card networks. Governments created a basic framework and mandated its use. Working within this framework, card brands and financial institutions then fine-tuned the process to best serve their customers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chargeback scheme is a process that allows consumers to be <a href=\"https:\/\/chargebacks911.com\/contingent-reimbursement-model\/\">reimbursed after a bad transaction<\/a>. For example, if a criminal uses a cardholder\u2019s identity to make fraudulent purchases, the cardholder can turn to the issuing bank and request a chargeback. The bank then overturns the transaction, and the chargeback is relayed to the merchant, who will be expected to cover the loss with added fees. It\u2019s all part of this organized scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not surprisingly, this fraud protection mechanism has been tweaked and adapted over the years as new laws and technologies arise. From the outside, it appears to be a fair, functional system. It can \u2014 and <em>does<\/em> \u2014 vary in many ways from one card brand to another. Mastercard have their own rules; Visa have theirs. Plus, these practices can change between countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a few basics that remain consistent, though. For instance, there are a few parties who will be involved in any chargeback. That said, the chargeback scheme typically follows these eight basic steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"margin\">\n<h3 class=\"margin\"><span class=\"redletter parap\">#1<\/span> <span class=\"yellowline\">|<\/span> <span class=\"blackhead margin\">The Cardholder Lodges a Dispute<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"parap wp-block-paragraph\">The cardholder feels a transaction is illegitimate and disputes the case with their bank (the issuer).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"margin\">\n<h3 class=\"margin\"><span class=\"redletter parap\">#2<\/span> <span class=\"yellowline\">|<\/span> <span class=\"blackhead margin\">The Issuer Files a Chargeback<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"parap wp-block-paragraph\">The issuer files a chargeback on the customer\u2019s behalf, withdrawing funds from your acquirer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"margin\">\n<h3 class=\"margin\"><span class=\"redletter parap\">#3<\/span> <span class=\"yellowline\">|<\/span> <span class=\"blackhead margin\">The Acquirer Removes the Funds<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"parap wp-block-paragraph\">Your acquirer deducts the funds from your account. With the rise of the internet and eCommerce, however, the system has become increasingly vulnerable to abuse by both fraudsters and cardholders. Lack of consistency between card network requirements has also created challenges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chargeback scheme was created to protect cardholders and help boost consumer confidence in credit cards. It was put into place back when credit cards were still a novelty, and buyers were still hesitant to use them for fear of fraud or abuse. Chargebacks offered tangible reassurance to consumers, and for a long time, the scheme worked as intended.
