In a Nutshell
Stopping chargebacks from happening in the first place is less of a hassle and far cheaper than representment. That’s why merchants should prioritize dispute prevention at every stage of the buying journey, from signup and checkout to fulfillment and beyond. In practice, merchants can work to prevent merchant errors, third-party fraud, and friendly fraud through a combination of technology-based, policy-based, and customer service-based approaches.
How to Prevent Discover Chargebacks: My Top Tips to Keep Yourself Safe
Fighting Discover disputes is hard work. Your best move is to try and stop as many of them as possible from happening in the first place.
Fortunately, you aren’t completely in the dark. Discover has a host of network-specific tools designed to help you authenticate buyers and stop fraudulent transactions at checkout. Combine these network tools with crystal-clear billing descriptors, proactive customer communication, and easy refund policies, and you’re well on your way to preventing the bulk of disputes from occurring.
In this chapter, I’ll share some tips and best practices so that you can proactively prevent Discover chargebacks from overwhelming your operations.
Discover Chargebacks
As if dealing with chargebacks isn’t hard enough by itself, every card brand has its own set of rules for contesting invalid disputes. For each network, there are different time frames, exemptions, and more. Discover credit cards are no exception, but what does that mean for merchants and consumers? How does the Discover chargeback process work? And what special tactics might merchants need for winning reversals?
Discover Dispute Tools for Merchants
Chargebacks were created to protect consumers. So, it’s not surprising that the system can sometimes seem skewed to the cardholder’s benefit. Discover also offers tools to help merchants manage and prevent chargebacks, though.
The Discover Network Dispute System (DNDS) is designed to aid in dispute resolution. Through it, authorized users can look up transaction and cardholder details and find other data for each claim. The platform also allows merchants to upload evidence to fight a Discover chargeback.
Other Discover Fraud Tools Include:
Discover ProtectBuy
Discover ProtectBuy is the Discover-branded version of 3-D Secure customer authentication. This solution uses technology to verify card member identity at the time of purchase. If a transaction is flagged as high risk, the card member must enter a single-use verification password sent by the system in real time.
Discover Verify+
Discover Verify+ identifies high-risk transactions prior to fulfillment, allowing US retailers to verify card member data at the point of transaction. Transaction information is compared to the most current data Discover has on file, providing additional fraud protection while helping minimize shopping cart abandonment.Discover Enhanced Decisioning
Discover Enhanced Decisioning is a no-cost fraud management solution that allows one to provide additional card member data to issuers for better decisioning. Delivered in real time, this information can help the issuer decide whether to approve or decline a sale, helping maintain a frictionless checkout and reducing fraudulent transactions.Fraud Alerts Standard
Fraud Alerts Standard is a free, web-based platform that can give US businesses early warning of fraudulent transactions. Immediate notification of fraudulent activity allows the merchant to quickly access transaction details to cancel outstanding transactions, subscriptions, or current orders. A premium version of the platform is also available.10 Tips for Preventing Discover Chargebacks
Fighting disputes drains critical resources, making proactive mitigation your most profitable strategy. By tightening your operational processes and utilizing network-specific tools, you can intercept the vast majority of Discover chargebacks before they ever materialize.
#1 | Enforce Authorization at Checkout
Never bypass a declined authorization or force a suspicious transaction through your payment gateway. At the minimum, capture Discover’s three-digit Card Identification Data (CID) and require an Address Verification System (AVS) match to stop unauthorized users at checkout. If possible, deploy an additional layer of security by deploying 3D Secure, or requiring cardholders to complete a second-factor challenge (e.g. entering a one-time SMS-based passcode).
#2 | Optimize Your Billing Descriptors
Cardholders who see charges they do not recognize may dispute them because they instinctively assume they’re fraudulent. Make sure your billing descriptor uses an easy-to-recognize “doing business as” name alongside a customer service phone number so buyers can call you instead of their bank.
#3 | Automate Order Updates
Stay in constant communication with your customers to defuse anxiety. For example, provide immediate order confirmations, shipping updates, and real-time delivery tracking alerts so that buyers stay confident and informed at every step.
#4 | Resolve Customer Inquiries Quickly
A frustrated customer left on hold isn’t going to give you a second chance. They’re going to hang up and open their Discover app to file a dispute. Staff your support channels so that you can provide helpful, lightning-fast responses that defuse customer complaints before they escalate.
#5 | Document Everything
Standardize how you log communications, save invoices, and archive delivery confirmations. Intentionally creating a paper trail for every transaction can give you the compelling evidence you need to respond to any ticket retrieval requests that come in before a chargeback gets filed.
#6 | Deploy Fraud Screening Tools
Integrate behavioral analytics and device fingerprinting into your payment gateway. Automatically flag or block high-risk orders, such as those with mismatched IP addresses or repeated order attempts with unusually high transaction velocities. Each tool and tactic should work alongside the others to offer multilayer protection as part of a broader antifraud strategy.
#7 | Design Frictionless Refund Policies
If returning an item feels like a hostile negotiation, buyers will instinctively choose the chargeback route instead. To disincentive this, try to make your refund policy as adaptable and customer-friendly as possible. It should be highly visible, simple, and generous.
#8 | Master Recurring Billing
Send a sequence of notification emails before a recurring charge hits a customer’s account. For an annual renewal fee, for example, a good sequence of intervals could be one month, one week, several days, and the day before a charge. This ensures that the charge doesn’t catch them by surprise, and gives customers a chance to cancel beforehand if they wish.
#9 | Monitor Analytics for Early Warning Signs
Watch your chargeback metrics like a hawk to identify emerging patterns. If most of your Discover chargebacks are tied to one reason code — say reason code AA (Cardholder Does Not Recognize), for example — then that could signal an issue with your billing descriptor, which is confusing customers and leading them to misidentify transactions as unauthorized.
#10 | Use Discover ProtectBuy®
Enroll in network-specific solutions like Discover ProtectBuy®, the card network’s branded 3D Secure solution. This fraud prevention tool helps you cut down on card-not-present fraud by serving as a second layer of verification. Most buyers will pass by with passive approval, while those presenting higher risk will be asked to provide additional verification at checkout.
Implementing these practices may help prevent some Discover card chargebacks. That said, merchants ultimately need a comprehensive chargeback management strategy that addresses the issue from all angles.
