So I said I'd type up Dr Farmen's parenting lecture for Gabby ...and here it is! :o)

When he gave this lecture, he stressed the fact that if you've done some of these things, it does NOT make you a bad parent. It simply means you're learning and working your way through it. A lot of these are for older children (but you get the idea).

Do's and Don'ts

Do's
1. Set limits and rules.
-pace child according to age and ability
-teaching: what's expected, why, consequences, demonstration, watch and validate, and share with them.
2. Always follow through with discipline/consequences (Immediate, logical and/or natural). Be consistent.
3. Give opportunities to make decisions and experience consequences
4. Modeling: how children learn
-children identify with successful parents/adults
-truthfulness
-trustworthiness
-self-disclose feelings
5. Unconditional love
-the gift of grace

Don'ts
1. Don't punish the child's behavior unless s/he can verbalize what s/he did "wrong" and why.
2. Don't punish feelings or wants, just their behavior. It is okay to reflect back their feelings (use reflective listening). "You're angry at me, huh?"
3. Don't use love withdrawal. Love should never be used to manipulate the child; it's never conditional.
4. Don't use verbal abuse. Ever.
-no insulting, name-calling. Makes the child feel unworthy and/or bad.
-no threats and warnings. Makes the child afraid.
-no interrogating. (that controls the conversation - forces child to disclose/child incriminates self)
-no bossing and ordering. Communicates power trips over children.
-no diagnosing and interpreting. Makes child feel manipulated and intruded on. Child will shut up quickly.)
-no accusatory behavior.
-no praising the child's personality. Makes child feel guilty when s/he doesn't live up to it.

The way you play the Box of Condoms Game is you have to come up with one item to take to the register with a box of condoms to make the cashier raise an eyebrow. And be creative, people, you're all sick and wrong, so try and come up with something better than just the old Vaseline standby?

for holy_whatever: Five times Danny didn't creep out Jordan with his overtures.

1.
Danny stepped out of his office, then back in. And out again.

“You doing the hokey pokey?” Matt leaned back in his chair and stared at his partner in crime. “Can I play?”

Danny stepped back in the room, took a breath and walked out again, winking as he put a script in Jordan’s hands. She smiled and kept walking.

2.
“You didn’t have to come along again,” Jordan crossed her arms across her chest and stared at him.

Danny flipped the page of Midwifery Today. “You want Matt to take you? I wouldn’t necessarily want Matt to take me. Of course, I’m not pregnant.”

Jordan sighed. “No, I’m perfectly capable of taking myself.”

“But I was so looking forward to being a midwife,” Danny winked at her and buried his face in the magazine.

3.
Jordan grabbed a bottle of water and stared down at the set. Danny walked in behind her and rapped 5 times on the door. Jordan answered with 2 taps on the glass.

4.
Danny leaned over Matt’s shoulder and pointed at the computer screen. “You know you just typed Harriet instead of Jordan, right?”

“What?” Matt looked at the screen and quickly deleted the mistake. “Wait- don’t you mean, Judy?”

“I said Judy.”

“You said Jordan.”

At that moment, Jordan popped her head in the room. “How’s it going, guys?”

Danny smiled at her and clapped his hands on Matt’s shoulders. “Fine.” He picked up one of the water bottles from the table and tossed it in her direction. “You get enough water today?”

She caught it with ease. “I’m fine, but thanks.”

5.
Danny and Jordan walked down the hallway side by side. He pushed his glasses up his nose and brushed his hand against hers accidentally. He stuck his hands in his pockets and continued walking. Jordan smiled and patted him on the shoulder, before turning into her office.

THE LIST
