[OOC] Post-red thread essay

Because I felt it could use an essay right now! This is an essay about Lambda's relationship with Rika, largely through a lens of how different it is from her relationship with Bernkastel.

Rika is closely related to Bern and her birth--everyone knows this, and it's definitely a part of why Lambda is so drawn to Rika and something that plays a big part in their relationship. At the same time, though, Rika is not Bern; their values and attitudes are, on many fronts, completely different. The thing about Lambda's relationship with Bern is that so much of it is colored by the kind of person Bern is. The things they do together, the way they treat each other--as unconventional as it is for two people supposedly in love, that's just the way they roll because of who they are. They accept and understand each other's cruelty with no problem, so the thought of suffocating each other death in a bath full of konpeito is ~super romantic~ to them. There's pretty much a mutual unspoken agreement that no matter what kind of terrible things they do to each other it won't change what they have. And Lambda does not really expect a lot of "affection" from Bern. Bern is cold and bitter and nearly dead inside and is not really capable of showing compassion for others. Lambda is the one person who is able to get close enough and move her heart enough to make her feel love, but Bern's dead heart is still really only capable of so much--that doesn't mean she'll treat Lambda with kindness, and she'd almost certainly put her own self-interest before Lambda's well-being. Lambda is aware of and perfectly okay with that.

The thing is, with Rika, that changes. Rika is nowhere as twisted as Bern--for lack of a better way to put it, killing and torturing is not something intrinsically part of her nature. So while Bern wanting to shank Lambda to death and hang her corpse on a wall translates to super romantic kya kya, with Rika it's... a little more complicated when she's willing to hurt Lambda, because when Rika's hurting her it's something separated from Rika's idea of love, whereas with Bern it's not. Basically, it's all relative: although Rika shows more caring for Lambda than Bern does objectively, Bern pretty much loves Lambda to the capacity she possibly can whereas with Rika it's a pull between affection and a specially tailored hate.

On another note, Lambda is extremely confident in her relationship with Bern! There is pretty much no doubt in her mind about what they share or how they feel about each other at all, and I don't think that anything could really shake that. She understands Bern fully, and sees why they need and love each other clearly. She knows she is Bern's most important person, and understands why Bern acts the way she does. She also firmly believes that she is good for Bern--that her presence in Bern's life makes her happier and helps her cope with her existence.

With Rika... not so much. Not only is Rika harder for Lambda to naturally read, that ever present pull between love and hate makes Lambda much less secure in the relationship they have. She is definitely not as crazy and neurotic "I LOVE YOU BUT YOU ONLY HATE ME" like she was under red thread yandere effect, but it was an exaggeration of something that does nag a bit at Lambda's mind. I mean, she's not so unperceptive as to not have realized that Rika really does love her to an extent, but it's harder for her to see how much the love and hate respectively weigh in when it comes to how Rika feels towards her. There's also the fact that Lambda is aware that although she is someone important to Rika, she can't exactly claim she is healthy for Rika. She realizes she constantly hurts Rika and drives her crazy, and honestly is probably a terrible influence. Lambda is not entirely sure about how much Rika really cares about her in comparison to other people, and is even less secure about whether she deserves to expect Rika to care about her at all. She tries to make Rika happy in her own way as much as possible, but she realizes that it's probably not something possible for her to fully do because of who she is and what she's done.

So because of that, when Rika pushed away as much as she did during the red thread event--saying things to imply she hated Lambda more than once and fighting to cut the strings that tied them together--it left a pretty strong impression on Lambda. Most of Lambda's behavior and reactions were ridiculously amped up by the red thread so she's aware not everything done or said during the event was genuine, but to her in retrospect, Rika's actions on that front made sense to her as something that weren't merely brought about the effect. Lambda can be extremely selfish, but she cares enough about Rika at this point that if she thinks letting Rika be free of her is honestly and truly in Rika's best interest, she's willing to let her go--hence why she ended up cutting the strings herself (and her selfishness came into play in the fact that she wanted to be the one making that decision and not Rika).

Basically, the red thread event sort of ended up working as a catalyst for Lambda to step back and wonder what the hell she really thinks she's doing in regards to Rika.

So Rika wrote an essay on her relationship with Lambda, and I was going to respond in the comments... but then it got so long and unwieldy and off-topic that I just decided to write my own essay and post it here. :|b

Lambda is... weird in that she simultaneously doesn't care about other people and yet kind of does. She's capable of empathy, looking at what she's doing objectively, and realizing how screwed up she is and why other people would consider what she does wrong, but she just usually puts her own needs first because not losing her mind at any cost is her priority. She lives in a selfish way because she feels that's the only way for her to survive. Lambda has learned to derive entertainment from anything at all – and that can be either watching people suffer horribly or sappy stories with happy endings (which is one of the things that really sets her apart from Bernkastel, who really can only enjoy the former) – because she really needs to be able to. Because when she gets bored, all there is for her, as she puts it, is "to fall into a bottomless hell." This also accounts for her energetic nature, because for her playing the part of a hyperactive ditz is the most fun way to live.

This is why although she is capable of extreme cruelty (e.g. all of EP5 except for maybe the very end), she is also capable of extreme selflessness and generosity (e.g. the various sacrifices she made in EP8). (... Though even then, I'd say Lambda's sympathy is based more on individual efforts and suffering and less having to do with any sort of universal morality. If that makes sense.)

Lambda is also, in some ways, a lonely person. Not in that she has any shortage of acquaintances to enjoy spending time with, because she is a complete social butterfly with a wide and varied circle of friends – but in that she longs for more people who can truly understand her, in a deeper sense. She wants to find more people who are like her. Just look at the "Lambdadelta's Diary" TIP: her deepest desire when she is going around granting wishes is to find more people who will "come down to the same depths she is in," because she doesn't want to be stuck alone out there. And this is essentially what her intense love for Bernkastel is based around; as the only two survivors of Hell, Lambda claims they are the only two people in the world who can truly understand each other. That sort of connection is easily the most important thing to her in the world, and it's one the biggest ways she copes with the kind of existence she leads. Because of that, you could say Bernkastel is the only person who Lambda indisputably, unconditionally needs; you can condemn every little thing about her, but she'll just be like "YEAH WELL AT LEAST BERN WILL ALWAYS UNDERSTAND ME AND LOVE ME SO IDGAF /o/" And in fact, although it is the single most twisted form of unconditional love ever, to the point where it hardly meshes with what the typical image of "unconditional love" is at all, I believe what Bern and Lambda have is indeed unconditional love! They can be trying to kill each other one night and then totally blow it off the next morning. They accept the fact that they are both bitches and embrace it. :|b

OKAY SO NOW THAT I HAVE SUCCESSFULLY RAMBLED ABOUT TOTALLY RANDOM TOPICS where does Rika fit into this picture??? Well, Lambda does in fact sympathize with Rika, even if this is not apparent in her behavior at all. Although it's a little different from what Lambda and Bern went through in that Rika was a piece on a game board and Lambda and Bern were witches in a higher plane of existence, the type of hell that Rika is stuck in is similar to the one Lambda crawled out of. So it's not like Lambda doesn't understand how much Rika is suffering or why the situation that Lambda has put her in is so infuriating. Lambda figures that if she were in Rika's position, she would probably be feeling fed up too. But even though she is aware of this, Lambda has no intention of budging on the issue; especially since Lambda is seeing everything from the outside perspective that Rika's hell comes to an end and she gets a happy ending, so although she understands why it is a big deal to Rika, she herself still can't think of it as a big deal and sees not interfering with the already predetermined outcome of Rika's story as more important. So that's why when Rika exploded at her she was just kind of like "/SHRUG okay well I get why she's pissed" and backed off for a bit. Because she has some amount of respect for Rika's frustration, even if she doesn't intend to do anything about it.

It would be ideal for her if Rika were able to form an understanding of her, why she acts the way she does, why she did something as cruel as endorse Rika's murder in the first place, and why the fact that she did that isn't such a big deal to her. That's why she asked Rika to reflect on the story of the development of Bernkastel's extreme cruelty (although obviously she did not explicitly identify the subject of the story as being Bernkastel), in hopes that she could make the connection between that story and why Lambda is such a bitch. But that's just an ideal situation, and she doesn't expect too much from it. If Rika still wants to be friends, that's great. If Rika wants to be done caring for Lambda, Lambda will get over it. (Keep in mind this does not mean the same thing as "leave Rika alone," because where's the fun in that?)

tl;dr Lambda is complicated in the head and needs thousands of years worth of therapy.

[OOC] EP8 Translations

So! I am playing Lambda post-EP8. And EP8 had a lot of development for Lambda (and her relationship with Bern) and shed a tiny bit of light on what her life is like outside of Battler and Beatrice's game board. As such - and since I imagine it will still be quite a while before Witch-Hunt releases a patch - I have translated and compiled the scenes I found particularly noteworthy for playing her character. This is mostly for my own reference, but also around for anyone who is interested in reading up on spoilers.

Translations are fairly rough, as a warning! There might be mistakes.

Lambda: Ahaha, exactly, she's just like a cat. She'll come to eat, but she'll never let you pet her head.
Battler: Lambdadelta. I see you made it.
Lambda: Despite what you may think, I'm a very busy person! But welll, I aaam Beato's guardian ... Oh, and wasn't I your guardian too? It's just obligation, you know, obligation! I happened to be in the neighborhood, so I just decided to drop by! Hey, Gohda! I brought some gifts! Can you dish them up properly?

Even though she claimed she just dropped by because she happened to be nearby, she had brought a beautifully wrapped bottle and several boxes of food as a gift.

Battler: Bernkastel isn't here yet.
Lambda: She's probably not coming. She's not the kind of the girl who would show up to a game she lost.
Beatrice: Most likely. She is a very proud person.
Battler: I feel like I was put through a lot of horrible ordeals because of her, but she was still another player who was involved in the game. I was hoping that on the last night of the last game, we could congratulate her too, but ...
Lambda: That's true. If she hadn't been around, this game may have reached a very different conclusion. Enemies and allies are both necessary components in bringing a game to be.
Beatrice: Indeed. Without an enemy, there can be no game.
Lambda: I can enjoy even defeat as part of a game. But she's not like that. ... There's no helping it, that's just how things are. So please don't condemn her.
Battler: Honestly, I wanted to thank her. ...Even though a lot happened, it was because she was here that we were able to make it to today. I wanted to thank her for that.
Lambda: Thank you. I don't know when I'm going to see her next. If I'm lucky, I'll see her again in another couple hundred years. But when that happens, I'll tell her.

Lambda: To think Bern would want to fight fair and square.
Bern: Go ahead and laugh.
Lambda: Why would I?
Bern: Thank you.
Lambda: ..........

Lambdadelta also understood.
Before Battler and Beato's story ended and everything was shut away in the cat box, Bernkastel had, for the first time, risen to the stage from the grandstands. The witch who hated the stage lights and had always hid in the stage wing, ... had showed the courage to come forth on the center of the stage. As her friend, Lambdadelta understood the human-like expression Bernkastel, who had finally reached that courage, wore ...

Lambda: What should I do?
Bern: Be an observer of my game, if you would.
Lambda: ... Fine by me. If you can promise that in exchange for participating in the game, you'll release Ange.
Beatrice: Naturally. If you don't promise that, we have no obligation to go along with your farce ...!
Bern: You'd have no obligation, but Ange would never return.
Beatrice: Then you can enjoy being branded as a loser for a few hundred years at your leisure.
Battler: Beato, don't provoke her. ... This isn't a fight we can get out of.
Beatrice: ... R ... Right.

Since a hostage was taken, Battler and Beato had no room to negotiate.
However, Lambdadelta, in exchange for agreeing to be the observer, could make Bernkastel promise to release Ange.
If she didn't promise that, Bernkastel would have nothing to lose.
In order to make this final fight that Bernkastel proposed official ... Lambdadelta was making her promise that.

Bern: ... Of course, Lambda. I promise. When the game is over, I'll release Ange.
Lambda: Don't bring me disgrace me, okay ...? Because when someone puts me to shame, I certainly make sure they regret it ...

Lambdadelta threatened her quietly.
But as if to say that even that expression was cute, Bernkastel laughed lightly in response.

Bern: I swear it. ... With our friendship at stake.
Lambda: Whew ...

Lambdadelta gave a whistle and grinned.
Apparently, that was the most trustworthy oath Bernkastel could make.

Beatrice: Kukuku! You shouldn't look so angry. And here I am praising your game as interesting.

The expression of Beato, who had won against Bernkastel's own game, was quite good-humored.

Bern: ... I'm not really angry. My face is always like this.
Lambda: The times when, within that expression, I find Bern's own sense of warmth ... I feel like I've found a beautiful star on top of a dark, snowy mountain peak.
Bern: ... Well excuse me for having a face like eternal snow.
Beatrice: Honestly, it's quite hard to give Lady Bernkastel praise. No matter how much you praise her, she takes it as sarcasm.
Lambda: Don't worry. She's the type who reflects on it carefully later.
Beatrice: Hohoh, so she's the type to reflect on it while hugging a pillow in bed?
Lambda: Yeah, yeah, just like that.

Lambda: Still, this is a little unexpected~
Bern: ... What is?
Lambda: I mean, for you to release Ange so easily.

Lambdadelta, while making sure her expression couldn't be seen by Battler and Beato, gave a slightly mean-spirited smile.

Bern: Is it that unexpected ...?
Lambda: Yeah, it is. Since it's you we're talking about, I figured you'd refuse to release her and continue bullying Battler with more and more tough problems. ... Or maybe you'd put some strange thoughts in Ange's head and totally stir up the game in the end.
Bern: .........
Lambda: And here I like to think of myself as the person who knows you best in the whole wide world. I'm disappointed my expectations were off.
Bern: ... You sure can talk. But don't worry. ... It seems you truly are the person who understands me best in the whole world.
Lambda: W ... Well, of course! Because I, Lambdadelta-sama, love and care about and understand Bern more than anyone in the whole wide universe~ ☆

Lambdadelta was flustered by Bernkastel's words which acknowledged their friendship, something she didn't hear too often.

Lion: ... And please, lend us your strength as well.
Lambda: Me?! No waaay! I already scouted things out for you, didn't I? I think I've already helped out more than enough!
Lion: How did you confirm that Ange-chan was in the Capitol of Books?
Lambda: Of course, with my own eyes. I don't believe in anything I don't see with my own two eyes~
Lion: So that means you have qualifications to enter the sacred ground of the Capitol of Books, doesn't it?
Beato: ... That's right. Great Lady Lambdadelta is a great witch of the Senate.
Battler: Lambdadelta ...
Lambda: ... What's with you people? ... Don't tell me you're trying to put me to work again?
Zepar: My, my, this is an unexpected turn of events ...!
Furfur: The only one who can enter the Capitol of Books is Lady Lambdadelta!
Zepar: Which means this must be?!
Furfur & Zepar: Lady Lambdadelta's chance to shine!
Lambda: Don't talk stupid! Are you people crazy? ... You want me, all by myself, to infiltrate that place again and bring Ange back?!

Everyone surrounded Lambdadelta and nodded eagerly.

Lambda: Sometimes even idiots should think carefully before they speak! To save Ange means to crash the great Aurora's party, okay?! You want me to make the entire world my enemy?! What do I get out of it?! Nothing, absolutely nothing! No matter what you offer me, it could never be worth making enemies out of the great Aurora and her happy little band of monster friends ...!
Lion: You'll be able to ruin the Great Aurora and the Great Bernkastel's plans, bring Ange back, and see a happy ending where everyone reconciles.
Beatrice: ... How about it, Lady Lambdadelta? You won't find a thrill like this one. ... If you pull this off, you will be able to forget your illness for another thousand years.
Battler: Please, Lambdadelta ...! Lend us your strength!

Please, please, pretty please! Help us out for Ange-chan's sake...! *chatter*chatter*clamor*!
Everyone crowded around Lambdadelta, seeking her assistance.

Beatrice: Please, Lady Lambdadelta ...! You are the only one who can do this...!
Battler: Please help us out! I'll show you the greatest story! I'll let you see it from a front row seat! So please lend us your strength!
Lambda: Shut uuuuuuup! Just shut the hell uuuuuup!!

Lambdadelta stood up, crushing her popcorn cup with a clenched fist.
The sweet, candy-flavored popcorn flew all over, clinging to the faces of everyone standing near her.
It was truly a funny scene.
... But no one was laughing.
Lambdadelta's expression was absolutely livid, a face she had never shown to anyone before.

Lambda: Don't misunderstand, okay?! I'm a spectator, just a spectator! Just a spectator who was invited by Beato and came to watch the game! So why the hell should I risk my own life for your sakes?! If Ange comes back, it'll be a happy ending?! Are you people stupid?! It's just gonna end with an enraged Bern and all those troops rushing in and crushing you all at once! There's only one reason why I'm still here! Because this Lion here insisted I'd get to see an interesting story! Yeah, I've got no doubt that soon I'll get to see an amazingly interesting story ...! And that's the sad, sad story where you all fight Bern's troops in a last stand, and get killed off one by one! Looks like you'll all get your chance to shine when you fall in battle, right?! And soon I'll get to see that! Soon, you're all going to die! But I'm different! I'm just a spectator! You've got no damn right to say "you should die with us too"!!

... No one said anything in response.
Admist the silence interrupted by nothing but the sound of the rain ... finally Lambdadelta herself hung her head in disgust.

Lambda: ... Sorry. I'm just the lamest there is. ... That's right, if I could stick out my chest proudly and say, "Leave it to me!", I'm sure my popularity would go through the roof and I'd be able to make it to the top 3 in the next popularity poll ... ... But, you know. ... Unlike you guys ... I'm not "a character in a story." ... I can't die. ... You guys can party late at night, all enthusiastic about how the climax is coming up. But for me, tomorrow's Monday and I have to wake up early for school ...! The worlds we live in are different ...! So that's why ... I ... ... *siiigh* ...

As if she had gotten dizzy, ... Lambdadelta sat back down on her chair with a thump.
And then she became expressionless like a doll, merely staring into a point in space in silence ...

Erika: Lady Lambdadelta's ... friends?

Unlike the isolated witch Bernkastel, Lambdadelta had many friends.
Those friends and patrons were nothing but territory lords that boasted tremendous power or spectres that were like living legends.
Jokes aside, her self-proclaimed fan club had enough influence to declare half of the sea of Fragments an independent nation.

Lambda: ... If I surrender ... I might be let off the hook after I'm stripped naked and left in the most horrible Fragment for a couple hundred years. ... It's wonderful. I think I might come out of it able to understand Bern's feelings a bit.

Lambdadelta didn't laugh. Most likely even what she said out loud was an optimistic guess at the punishment she'd receive.
She kept saying that she wouldn't provide any more assistance than this. She was already taking a huge gamble. Risking everything she had.
For what purpose?

Lambda: ... Isn't it obvious?

While brushing her hair away, Lambdadelta grinned.

Lambda: It's because you guys will show me the perfect happy ending.

Lambdadelta embraced Battler and Ange's heads and knocked their foreheads.

Lambda: Make sure you show me, certainly ...!

*The "super paper" thing is actually a Japanese word play. "Paa" is the Japanese word for paper in rock-paper-scissors, but it also can mean "stupid" or "foolish." So when Lambda calls herself "super paper," she's actually also saying "I'm really stupid." Sadly that doesn't translate at all. :(

Lambda: You two are really idiots! You're really planning to play tag with Bern and all of her cats?!
Ange: If there's even a 1% chance!
Battler: You can be certain we'll grab it...!

The difference in enthusiasm between Battler and Ange, who had everything to lose, and Lambdadelta, was immense.
However, Lambdadelta was no coward.
She was a great witch of the Senate. ... If she surrendered, she wouldn't be able to escape severe punishment, but she would be forgiven after a few hundred years.
There was no way someone with a life ahead of them could be as determined as someone with everything to lose. No one could blame her.

Lambda: ... Ah geez, you two really are stupid, you know that? ... Fine. I'll tell you about a plan that's got a bit more than a 1% chance of working. What do you think it is?

The two looked at each other.

It was a truly ridiculous children's game of rock-paper-scissors.
Since they'd promised to start with paper... this was a chance to make a surprise attack and use something else.

Battler recognized what that was. ... It was the magic Fragment that Erika had used when she disappeared, a Fragment that could give one the power to cross the sea of Fragments.

Lambda: With that, you two can return to the Golden Land. Besides, this is the best option. Bern would wipe the floor with you two in a few seconds. But forget lasting an hour, I might even be able to win! And I have a score to settle with her. Got to win this round and make it even. ... Still, away games sure are hard.

Lambdadelta stood up while pretending to complain.

Lambda: Well then, I'm off. ... I'm a show off, so I guess it was impossible for me to be a spectator after all. Sorry for stealing your chance to shine. ... Abilities: She is incredibly powerful. And by that I mean her one big fight scene is described as new universes being created and destroyed as the two sides clash. Specifically, she can teleport, control exploding candies, create and manipulate black holes in the palm of her hand, and ... other stuff.

Additionally, as the Witch of Certainty, she has the power to grant wishes; however, it has to be a wish that the person in question works hard for. Basically, she has the power to ensure that hard work will certainly be rewarded.

And lastly, she has the ability to travel through the Fragments, which are basically alternate worlds/dimensions in WTCverse.

Notes for the Psychics/Magically or Spiritually sensitive: Is a witch! An extremely powerful one! A hell of a lot smarter than she acts. Experienced severe trauma in her past.

Series: Umineko no Naku Koro ni
Character Age: Thousands of years old, but appears no older than her early teens.
Canon: When the filthy rich Ushiromiya family gathers at their private island, Rokkenjima - a place permeated by the legend of a witch named Beatrice - for their annual family conference, things don't go quite as planned; a typhoon hits and the family is killed off one by one in a series of closed room murders. Even after everyone is dead, it remains unclear what could have caused their deaths. Was it an intricately planned murder carried out by human hands, or was it a magic ritual of the witch Beatrice? Our now deceased hero, Ushiromiya Battler, vehemently denies that magic could truly exist to cause these murders, and is dragged by the witch Beatrice to a meta-world dimension where the two engage in a game of logic and wits to prove their own explanation of the crime.

Lambdadelta is the Witch of Certainty, capable of traveling through the Fragments (basically equivalent to alternate realities/worlds), and a spectator of Battler and Beatrice's game. At a first glance, she appears to sport a personality that matches her sickeningly cute and pink appearance and eternal sweet tooth: bubbly, childish, comically egotistical, and a bit on the dumb side. In reality, Lambdadelta does have the wisdom and experience befitting her long life, but for now playing the fool is fun and distraction from boredom is what she needs to keep herself going. Unfortunately, her endless search for entertainment has also given birth to quite the sadistic streak, and she is unashamed of getting her jollies from things like laughing at the misfortune of others or finding cannibalism to be a hoot. Still, underneath all the mean-spirited trolling, there is a core of decency and a fondness for those who work hard to achieve their goals - it just might take a little bit of effort to find that.

Anyway, if there's one thing here I have high hopes for right now, that's the cooking, so it better not disappoint! I've heard about this famous Tuesday Soup. And you could really impress me if it comes with some sides, like fried toucan, gorilla teriyaki, maybe some Japanese schoolgirl sashimi~ ♪ There are lots of resources around, so I expect creative things! Just it better not be a total cop-out, like the so-called People Stew is actually just made of spare zombie parts that were lying around or something. Because that would be almost as bad as, like, using Splenda instead of real suga--
