Blah, blah, blah, whine whine

My dad used to get on my case a lot for "valuing my friends over my family", which, okay yeah. Maybe I do a little, but I always realize around Christmas time why. It's not like I'm rejected by my family, but there's a strange kind of detached "handling" they have around me. Like- sure, I'm totally the most accomplished grandkid right now (living on my own with a 3.5 GPA and not even asking my parents for rent money), but there's still an air of: "Oh Jenn, you very strange person how are you carelessly subverting the hegemonic worldview now *eyeroll*" even tough when it comes down to it, I'm very similar to my cousins. Sometimes I wonder if they treat me this way the older I get because my mom's a weirdo or something, unlike the other two women who married into the family. Who, uh, are not kooky, neurotic lesbians. :P (I LOVE YOU MOM, SERIOUSLY ♥)

MY POINT IS, Christmas was a depressing affair this year because my family didn't even ATTEMPT to buy me gifts. I'm glad for the money because, lol, I need it (and more or less did mumble to my Dad: "J-just tell them to get me money if they can't figure out what to buy me...") but I'm the only one who got bills in a card. That, paired with the weird treatment I get, makes me feel like I'm nothing more than an after-thought. More-so after I spent the evening hanging out with Cat and Natasha, and all of today with Leslie, Lici and Leslie's family. All in all, Cat's mom was more finicky and concerned with me having a good Christmas than my grandparents were. And Leslie and Lici's mothers were both a *lot* more excited to see me. My friends, it goes without saying, made the past two days worth it.

I by no means had a BAD Christmas (God, I'm not THAT selfish and self-absorbed, har har), it's just when things like this happen, I don't understand why my Dad gets so surprised when I proclaim that my friends are my family. :P UH, I LOVE YOU GUYS. *HUGZZZZZ*

Although my Mom, the dear she is, got me a nice hat and a copy of MW by Osamu Tezuka.
