Listens: To Wish Impossible Things; The Cure

I complain about stuff all the time, but rarely movies.

YEAH, I KNOW THIS MOVIE CAME OUT NEARLY A YEAR AGO, BUT...
I think one of the biggest mistakes the Silent Hill movie made was that it forgot that SH is supposed to be terrifying for the person viewing the plot, not the person participating in it. Granted, since you control the character in a video game there isn't much "reacting" they can do, but even so: for the most part Silent Hill heroes are remarkably unaffected by their surroundings. How creepy is it when Henry comes across a skinned body hanging from the ceiling and mildly remarks: "something smells bad" or James solves puzzles by completely arbitrary and inexplicable means? Or Heather, by the end of the game, simply observes: "There is a dead body here, but nothing interesting." upon revisiting the amusement park?

There's just this predictable build up in horror movies that you can practically time down to the second: you've got the creepy, crawly that the main character can't see, followed by the BIG JUMP! and the main character expressing terror. The engagement of the on-screen character is comforting because the creepy occurence is dealt with. What would be much creepier is something like- a character walking by a mirror and the mirror reflecting things wrong (which yes, is a cliche in itself), but the character not acknowledging it. In most movies this would be thin foreshadowing implying that either SOMETHING! BAD!(tm) was about to happen, or that the vision from the mirror would somehow come true. In a Silent Hill scenario, although it might display some symbolism in the larger framework- such a scene would never be addressed adequately and simply serve to unnerve the player. Loose ends, lack of definition and explaination: that stuff is scary. The SH movie was too obsessed with telling us when it was supposed to be horrific. *sigh*

I WOULDN'T STILL CARE SO MUCH IF A SECOND ONE WASN'T BEING MADE. :P

ALSO...
I need to actually see 'The Departed'. -___-;; Although everything I've heard and read about it causes me violent aversion.

And maybe one day I can watch Infernal Affairs in order. I saw the last half, and then several months later, the first half. I imagine it's even more incredible when viewed correctly.

AND
I really hate it when people who have stupid, uneducated opinions- based primarily on their inability to understand something- think that if their opinion is violent, vehement and extreme enough that makes it not only brilliantly articulate, but also more intelligent than the opinions of others. -____-;;
