LOTS OF GREEN THINGS THAT ARE GREEN.
1. The new ninja turtles movie was awesome. Simply, utterly, NOSTALGICALLY awesome. Granted, some of the character designs were a little... (Casey's jaw is SQUARE not POINTY!) and the action climax of the movie was a little clumsy. But, oh, the emotional climax was *perfect*. Like. It *got* to me. And it was freaking ninja turtles. But that's because I love Raphael a whole lot and, y'know, this being the first movie in the "new franchise" it was kind of a pre-requsite that's he'd be having a little emo-kid drama queen bitch fest while Leonardo worried after him all... worriedly. And that was all well and good and, um, completely awesome.
And at least they didn't end up hugging in a bath-tub this time (OH, OLD TURTLES MOVIES).
ALSO! ALSO! A lot of the characterization in the movie was *old school* characterization. And the movie was so. So. 90's in some places because, really, Ninja Turtles is kind of the epitome and personification of 90's pop culture. ♥
UH. YOU KNOW YOU GREW UP IN THE 90'S WHEN A NINJA TURTLES MOVIE IS SERIOUS BUSINESS.
who wants to go see it again with me? :D
2. I never want Judd Winick to write the Green Arrow ever again. Why, DC, why? The current Green Arrow series is ending at issue #75 with the BIG REVEAL that Ollie is going to, OMG PROPOSE! TO! DINAH! (this has been officially announced. lol, there ARE no spoilers in the comic fandom!) which is being played up as some big UNEXPECTED SHOCK because, y'know, it's not like he's proposed to her before! It's not like he's proposed to her more than once only to be shot down pretty thoroughly! DC just wants an "OMG! BIG! MARRIAGE!" to compete with Marvel's Storm + Black Panther wedding. Only, uh, in this case the the marriage actually WOULD be big news (considering they've been an on-and-off item since, oh, 1967ish) and. Actually. Make sense. whereas the unholy union of Storm and BP ends up shafting BOTH Ororo and T'Challa's characters....
BUT! It's not the marriage I'm bitching about. Because goodness knows, I'd be happy if it actually happenseven though it's a little out of character considering how opposed Dinah's always been to juggling crime fighting and a family life since Ollie and Dinah kind of make me sappy and it would be pretty adorable and Hal could be the best man and Lian could be the flower-girl and Eddie could smoke and swear in front of all the priests while Connor rolled his eyes a lot and had awkward moments with his dad and Roy could be all: "I'M PROUD OF YOU FOR GROWING UP, OLIVER. HA HA HA." and Babs might actually SHOW UP instead of watching it all creepy-like from her super-computer and... and... I love the Arrow Family and associates.
NO, THE PROBLEM IS that the general implication DC's been making lately is that Green Arrow is only being cancelled since it's going to become Green Arrow/Black Canary. Which might be all well and good (IT'D BE LIKE GRELL ERA GA, ONLY WITH LESS BLOOD AND MORE DINAH KICKING THE SHIT OUT OF STUFF. AND MORE SURROGATE CHILDREN) except that the other general implication is that it would be Judd Winick writing this series.
Which is NO. It's NO THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS much.
Judd's Ollie is okay. I'm not fond of him sometimes, but honestly: he doesn't do a bad take on the character. Also, I love the way he writes Mia and he's arguably got the best grip on Roy um, ever (BECCA, FEEL FREE TO CONTRADICT ME ON THIS? but I love Outsiders!Roy XDDD).
But Winick cannot write Dinah to save his life. Not only can he not write Dinah, he also couldn't write Ollie and Dinah's relationship for beans. AND NOT ONLY CAN HE NOT WRITE THEIR RELATIONSHIP, he is also the one who finally made Ollie cheating on Dinah canon. Which just... no matter what anyone says, it was not canon until Winick was given an editorial mandate to break them up and decided do it in the cheapest way possible. Ollie and Dinah had a lot of complications in their relationship back in the Grell era, but intentional infidelity was never one of them. :P Other writers have always come up with more interesting things to push them apart. Winick went for the irritatingly crass low blow.
Also, I hate the way Winick writes Connor. And the way he downplays him. :P
SO YOU KNOW WHO SHOULD BE WRITING THIS SERIES? Gail Simone. It'll never happen, but man oh man. She writes the best Dinah in the history of... forever. And also writes a fantastic Ollie. And also once wrote a two parter with Chuck Dixon where she proved she could write Connor and Eddie. And I have no clue if she has ever written Mia or Roy, but I bet she'd be amazing at that too because she is just so damn talented. It'll never happen, but I can dream, can't I? Dream for a comic starring my favorite "super"hero that I can actually enjoy.
So, yeah, Winick: GTFO of my comics.
ALSO, WINICK, NEWSFLASH. THE ARROW FAMILY DID NOT HAVE SECRET IDENTITIES. THAT MAKES YOUR CURRENT ARC EVEN STUPIDER.
3. I'm going to see Romeo Dallaire speak at Dal on.... tomorrow (Tuesday) actually. I'm incredibly excited.
EDIT: Lawl, the sleeping pills my Dad bought me say they shouldn't be taken by people who have asthma and I just took one. How unlike me to *not* read the box before taking medication.
OH WELL. LETS HOPE I DON'T WAKE UP NOT ALIVE. :D I'm sure it's nothing. It's not like my asthma's actually that severe..
OTHER EDIT: Don't worry- I just found it kind of funny. Hell, my Dad's bought me *tylenol* that's cautioned against asthmatics taking it. ASTHMA. SO DEBILITATING.
And at least they didn't end up hugging in a bath-tub this time (OH, OLD TURTLES MOVIES).
