AU's, and the various degrees of
(The time on my lj is screwed up. I am technically posting this tommorow. o.O)
It seems to me like there's three types of AU's.
1. The type where the author wants to see characters from a certain series put in a different situation. These sorts tend to either be comedies, or serious pieces that feature ironic juxtapositions in relation to actual canon of the series.
2. Where the author in question absolutely loves the characters in the series but could care less for the actual plot line (which she believes is rather dull in the firstplace), so places the characters in different settings more to her liking.
3. When the author has this AMAZING!!!! IDEA!!!! That would probably make a really wonderful original work, but is so used to writing fanfiction, their amazing story gets penned down hiding behind the safe masks of her favorite characters.
Now, I've come to dread AUs (after prancing around in GW territory two and a half years ago *shudder*), but in all honesty, categories 1 and 3 can occasionally have some absolutely stunning results. Unfortunately, category 2 is the most prevalant.
(Also, an AU can be something so small as chaning a slight event in a series and taking it in an entirely different direction whilst remaining in the canon universe.)
