I thought I would post a picture of this guy, who visited me today (along with about 20 of his friends), because I'm talking with the lovely sylvanwitch about our respective local wildlife. (Hi Sweetie, thanks for the Elly Project letter!)

I'm standing just inside my front door when taking this picture. He's less than 10ft away from the side of my house.

This was a great reminder to appreciate where I live!

It seems to be deteriorating over the years, so I find it a bit perplexing.

Good quality roast beef, if available. Otherwise ham.

I used to watch competitive eating sometimes, but mostly because I was entertained by people’s explanation for why they consider it a sport. So I’m not sure it counts for this question.

Brown. I’ve never colored it, but this summer I almost did a purple-to-blue streak thing.

The inspiration for the tree in the banner was the tree outside the Winchester family home, which Sam dreamed of and drew in the episode “Home.” What better way to represent Sam and Dean than as two twisted, intertwined branches of the family tree, right? Right??
 

For the banner and the third image I screen-capped facial profiles and traced them. To create the night sky I used star brushes from here and here. Everything was done in Photoshop (ancient version).

Pondering 9.01

First of all, yes, Dean absolutely would allow the violation of Sam's body and mind if he thinks it's the only way to save Sam's life. Awful as it is, this action was completely IC for Dean - even though he knows Sam wouldn't have said yes to possession. I wish the writers had had Dean at least suggest that Ezekiel possess him instead, and try to heal Sam from inside Dean. That discussion could have been interesting.

Was that really Death, or was it another projection of Sam's mind? If it was really Death, it turns out he's a surprise!SamGirl; if it was Sam, he's suddenly extremely conceited. I think this one is a 50-50 chance until we get more info. Just because Dean and Bobby were manifestations doesn't necessarily mean Death was too. Sam was, after all, on the verge of dying and it's reasonable Death could have come to reap him. Also, if Death was a construct of Sam's mind, then where was his real reaper?

I wonder if Death (if it was really him) recognized Ezekiel when he showed up looking like Dean. Maybe the point of the comment about bringing him cronuts was to convince Death he was really Dean, because they've bonded over junk food in the past. Or maybe to convince the audience. Or Sam. Hmm.

So was it Ezekiel or Dean who said to Sam, "There ain't no me if there ain't no you"? My interpretation is Ezekiel (with Dean's cooperation), unfortunately; I'd've preferred to hear it from Dean. I do think Dean does feel that way, though. But Sam had to be saying yes to Ezekiel (albeit unknowingly), that's the whole point of having the conversation at all.

I do not trust Ezekiel! He's going to get all comfy in Samland and not want to leave! (Nor would I!) Hence the name of the episode! Plus, we don't even know for sure who this guy is. We only have his word that he's Ezekiel, a name Cas recognized. He's hot, tho. :)

So now the angels use Dean's phrase "angel radio" amongst themselves? That's just stupid.

The title card is very spiffy. I'm not a big angel fan, though, so it's a bit disheartening.

8 Days of Wincest - Season 8

Well, I didn't manage to post for most days of 8 Days of Wincest, but here are some season 8 thoughts and some Wincest podfic recs.

Why didn't Sam look for Dean?
I've been reading a lot of Sam meta lately, and I think I finally have some decent head canon for Sam not looking for Dean while he was in purgatory.

I haven't actually read anyone say this, but I doubt I'm the first. I think Sam was motivated by fear of what he might do/become, so he hid his head in the sand by living in a dream world (as he talked about in "Hunteri Heroici") with Amelia. The first time he had to live without Dean ("Mystery Spot") he turned into a dangerous killing machine. The second time, he ended up starting the apocalypse.

Remember, Sam has thought of himself as being tainted by evil ever since he was a little kid ("The Great Escapist"). What he was actually doing while not looking for Dean was desperately holding on to his determination to not let himself hurt anyone this time. That's why hitting the dog was such a big deal, and why he said "I did this" when he rushed him into the animal hospital. Hurting Riot was a crack in the mental dam Sam had built up.

It's also important to keep in mind that Sam thought Dean was dead, not missing. Granted it was an assumption without proof, but that was what Sam concluded based on what he saw. He didn't know Dean was suffering; for all he knew Dean was in heaven. That makes this instance fundamentally different from the last time Dean died, when Sam knew he was in hell and would have done anything to rescue him.

So, while Sam's "world imploded and came raining down" ("Southern Comfort"), he put his mental effort into protecting the rest of the world from becoming collateral damage. Maybe, just maybe, this is a case of character growth instead of OOC writing from tptb.
Maybe.

Hi Flist,

I haven't been around much (again!), so my apologies for not keeping up with your posts. I hope you're all doing well.

I had a great visit with caarirose, who came all the way from Australia to hang out with friends in the US, see a little band we like to call Kane ;), and go to Wincon. Wincon was great fun, as always. Giant, sentimental hugs to old friends locknkey, desertport, gestaltrose, tsuki_no_bara, and more. Hugs also to my new friends, whose names are scribbled on scraps of paper in locations as yet to be determined (but not lost!).

I'm on this holiday love meme thing. The anonymity aspect seemed weird at first (I'd say the same things in a comment whether my name is on it or not), but I think I actually like receiving the comments better this way. It is not logical, but it is apparently true (to paraphrase a quote with, I think, a very apt context). In any case, I'll look around for you guys on the meme.

What little time I do spend on LJ usually involves podfic these days. I did a few rec posts on spnroundtable. They were called From the Top, Beware Nasal Beverage Expulsion, J2 non-au Porn, and Smile On Your Brother. Now I'm doing a monthly podfic roundup post over there, Podfic Appreciation 101 and Give the Gift of Podfic so far.

I'm pathetically stalled on my own podfic though! I've recorded and mostly edited ash_carpenter's Anti-Kink Series and riyku's short fic Song and Dance. I clearly have a weakness for 1) kinks gone humorously wrong, and 2) getting through the final stage of finishing podfic! I keep mucking about with sound effects and music. I might need an intervention from podfic friends about this!

Amplirecathon 2011 recs

I participated in Amplirecathon 2011 (yay podfic!). See the summary list too, because I went on the last day and tried not to duplicate other recs (or my list from last year). I also tried for more variety than usual, but it's still mostly SPN or J2 ("not that there's anything wrong with that"). :)

SPN Sam/Dean

Smart People Who Do Dumb Things: If I had to choose just one candle_beck podfic to listen to (but I don't - yay!) this would be it. One of my favorite finally-admitting-to-their-feelings Sam/Dean fics. Snapshots of them through several years. R, 1 hr 15 min.

The Year of Letting Go, written by runedgirl and read by meansprite. This has an intimacy to it that, when combined with the way meansprite's voice seems to weave through the listener's mind, feels almost like being under a spell. NC-17, 4 hrs.

SPN Gen

Apocalypse Z, written and read by baylor. If all gen was this good… well, ok, I'd still listen to slash. But this is really unbelievably phenomenally awesome! (And who'd've guessed the Zombie Apocalypse would have a theme song?) 2 hrs, 20 min.

Deguello, written by oselle and read by riverbella. I don't read a lot of John stories, but this one really works. Author's summary: John wrestles with his conscience and calling, after Dean is hurt for the first time. 1hr, 30min.

J2

Have You Seen Him Whom My Soul Loves, written by veronamay and read by nu_breed, is kind of a surprise because I wouldn't have thought I'd be into fic in a religious setting. Here, though, the characters'
faith comes with intelligence and depth, as in this quote from Jensen's
thoughts: "It gives him hope, to watch people in love, because there must be a reason behind so much feeling. It can't just be random chemical reactions and electrical impulses; there's some element of the soul at work. …And if people have souls, then there must be a place for them when life is done." The religious characters, including priests, care about the well-being of people struggling with "sin," as opposed to being self-righteously cruel under the guise of caring. But enough about religion! This has some smokin' hot scenes as well as strong emotion and empathy. (And a very intriguing Christian Kane as a defrocked priest who saunters in with beer and moral support.) Warnings: infidelity, self-harm. NC-17; just over 4 hours.

Crossovers

Saving Grace X SPN:
In Judgement of Angels and its sequel Better I Should Know, written and read by chemm80. If you've seen Saving Grace you'll be floored at how well Chemm80 captured the character of Grace. Even so, if you've never seen Saving Grace that doesn't detract from the fic AT ALL. Just know that Grace and Dean have something in common: uninvited angels. These fics melted my brain, they're so hot. And believe me, I never thought I'd say that about either het or threesome. I can't recommend these highly enough. NC-17, Dean/Grace, Sam/Dean/Grace; 1hr.

Angel (Ats) X SPN:
Black-Throated Wind written by topaz119 and without_me; read by chemm80.
Sam and Dean disrupt a cult ceremony and when the dust settles, a naked, amnesic Lindsey is huddled on the ground, trembling after years in hell. Rather than leave him there, S&D toss him in the impalla and off they go to finish working the case. Lindsey doesn't know who he is, but he has an unexpected mix of legal and supernatural knowledge, Latin better than Sam's, and an ass-kicking attitude. This is a particularly interesting take on amnesia fic because of how Lindsey reacts to surprises from within. NC-17, Lindsey/Dean, 1 hr 45 min.

I ended up with the the last day, and knew I was going to have to regretfully cross many fics off my list to avoid repetition. But I promised myself I could still rec Chash's spn/bones Xover no matter what. With every scene, it doesn't seem possible for it to get funnier, then it does.

Not SPN or J2 or other CWRPS (Gasp! celtic_forest knows there are other fandoms???)

Star Trek Reboot: waldorph's illogical series, read by 2naonh3_cl2. So. Damn. Good. 12hrs.

Criminal Minds: A beautiful trio of vignettes featuring Spencer Reid. ashbear02 both writes and reads with a warm delicacy reminiscent of the character himself. Just beautiful.
Expectation, Awareness, Unintended.
Hotch/Reid, PG-13, about 40 min total.

Looking For a Thrill (but you've done it all) by strippedpink, read by juice817. I can't explain why, but I could listen to this every single day and it would make me smile every time. (And I've never even seen Gilmore Girls.)
From the author: "As we know next to nothing about Clay MacGyver, it is therefore quite obvious he likes boys. More specifically, Dean Forester." Young MacGyver/Dean Forrester. NC-17, 30min.

This is handmade, my own design, and one of a kind. The circle is sterling silver, and the pentagram and wirewrap are sterling silver plated. All of the beads are glass except the spiral (which swings when you move your hand :) and the star at each end. The beads are on strong elastic, so this is *very* comfortable to wear and easy to put on and take off. Seriously, here's a quick (1.7MB) VIDEO showing how easy it is.
This is one size fits everybody. If your wrist is bigger than medium/large, just add the chain extension. (The extender would be handy for necklace chains if you don't need it for the hand jewelry.)
Anything I forgot to say? Just ask. Oh, and I'll pay postage, including international.
