We have some news...about more waiting. ^^;;

CAST 12 is still in the works, but other projects (like a new book and making Private Iris regular) is making the release slower than everyone wants. But rest assured that they haven't forgotten about it.

EK 8 )

Sir Jamie discussed a comic book on Jam 88.3's Shelve It, then went on to announce one of the several reasons why Cast is taking so long.

Jamie Bautista and Arnold Arre will soon be launching Private Iris, a children's comic series. By his description, Iris is the smart but shy girl detective of the series, with a sidekick who has more personality than she does! Think Mulder and Scully's dynamics for kids, or a local version of Disney's Filmore. It's bound to be smart and really cool.

This series and Cast 12 will very likely come in close succession over the coming months.

BTW Sir Jamie will make another appearance on Shelve It when it airs in the last Thursday of April, he said so. He will probably make a few announcements then.

EK 8 )

Official statement

From Sir Jamie:

Hello all!

First off, I'd like to apologize to everyone for the lack of any
updates the last few months. To be honest, the reason for the silence
was that I myself wasn't sure what to tell people. I've been really
busy with a lot of stuff and I haven't had time to work on the last
issue. But I did tell my staff that I was planning to release issue
12 around February. Obviously, that hasn't happened. I also had some
problems getting in touch with Jhomar initially the last few weeks (no
doubt he was also busy with stuff while waiting for Cast scripts), but
I've gotten in touch with him and we're furiously working on finishing
the issue. Arnold and I have been working on various stuff both
together and separately, but he's on board and is all set to finish
his half when I send him the script.

1) Cast 12 won't be out this February. Expect it most likely late
March, probably after Holy Week.
2) While I had trouble contacting Jhomar recently, both the artists
are now working on getting the issue done. But all the delays were
because of me. I hadn't finished the script.
3) Both stories are plotted. 12 pages of Jhomar's script is done and
8 have been drawn. I've given Arnold 4 pages of script and he's given
me 2 colored pages and the cover.
4) Cast 12 will be the last issue of Cast for the foreseeable future.
5) Nautilus Comics has finished its association with Mango Books (on
good terms), and have already ceased operations as of January 2008.

Thank you all for your incredible patience and support the last five
years. It's been a wonderful trip!

Again, last that I know, Arnold Arre will be doing the Will/Ces/Manny story that includes Mons and majority of the cast, while Jhomar Soriano holds scripts for the Lel/Joe/"Joy" story. I have no idea which illustrator the Elmo/Maita side story went to, and how it was weaved in.

So, a little more waiting, okay?

EK 8 )

updates, updates

Right now it's rather unlikely that CAST 12 will come out in February. This is because of two major reasons:

1. The issue itself still is not complete. Because of real-life concerns, Jhomar Soriano is hard to contact for completion of his half.

2. Nautilus Comics has separated from Mango Books, which partly means that the publishing power Sir Jamie had before to print out CAST is now gone. He has to shell out his OWN money now to print it, and, he has problems at that end. If anyone has any good ideas, email the official email address and see if you can help out.

Sir Jamie promises to release official statements in the near future, and to update the CAST website.

Also, this bit of info:

...listen in to JAM 88.3 on Feb. 28 at 8 pm. I'll most likely be
announcing there the other comic series Arnold and I are launching,
which also contributed to Cast 12's delay. We've been working on this
for over a year, but it'll be really cool! :-)

Keep posted. Eventually we'll get some good news. ^^v

EK 8 )

Mr. Jamie Bautista answers queries about a future compilation and a future movie. Under the cut.

About creating a compilation of the major CAST comic panels. I asked if he would make it 2 volumes, one for the Ronin Core set and another for the Arre/Soriano set.

The chances of this happening: pretty good. Though it won't happen
for a while, most likely not released in the way people expect, and
probably only half in the way you suggested. What do I mean? You'll
see... :-)

Regarding any live rendering of the CAST material (movie, TV show, etc.):

I know I've told you several times that I really didn't want to see
Cast in another media locally, but things may change. As you may
know, Arnold has his Andong Agimat being developed into a movie or TV
series by Unitel Pictures. They're shopping it around in the US for
investors. Depending on how well things go for Arnold with Andong [Agimat], it may change my mind about shopping Cast around to local productions.
Who knows, Arnold may even be able to help get Cast known with his new film connections. So I'm leaving the door open since I believe in
Arnold and if he thinks he can have his works faithfully done by local productions, that'll be enough for me.

If you don't know yet, Arnold Arre's Andong Agimat story will have a movie in the near future. Let's all hope it actually turns out decent.

As for those of you who might want to make fanfics for Cast, he's cool about it, so bring it on. Although it may be wise to wait for Issue 12 first.

Finally, he's encouraging that this LJ comm stay around for whatever they may have planned. Let's all hope he gets time and opportunity to do those plans.

EK 8 )

Bad news, folks.

Let us get straight to the point.

1. The release of Issue 12 is STILL undecided, but hopefully it will not be longer than February 2008.

2. Issue 12 WILL BE THE LAST ISSUE. Not of the current arc, but of CAST itself.

Details under the cut, from a letter from Sir Jamie:

Yes, a lot of people have been asking, including my artists. :-) I've

decided to give you the update since most people check your LJ for
Cast news. :-)

To be honest, I can't give a definite date when issue 12 will be out.

I'm afraid of setting a release date, like I have been for the past
few months, only to not hit it. I've been busy with a number of
things and unfortunately Cast is always what gets pushed to the bottom

of the pile. As is often the case in real life, our personal projects

(which is what Cast is to me) usually take a back seat to more urgent
projects, especially those that pay.

All I will say is that Arnold, Jhomar and I will do our best to get
issue 12 out as soon as we can. I've been aiming to get Cast 12 done
before 2007 lets out, but I can't make any promises. Rest assured
that I will inform you and all those who have emailed us the moment
the issue goes to press, which should be about a week before release.
I doubt it will out any later than February, but again, I don't want
to make any promises. :-)

And now for some sad news.

Cast 12 will be our last issue.

As much as I love doing Cast, the last few months have been really
busy and I feel that I can't give Cast the dedication it deserves.
Aside from the writing, lay-out and lettering, handling the
promotions, distribution and business side of Cast just takes too much

time. And while we have a very dedicated and loyal following, sales
aren't as great as they should be, most likely due to our spotty
distribution and slow release schedule. Basically the same problems
that plague most local comics. While I don't think I'll ever tire of
writing Cast, I feel that I am weary of the whole business of comics
publication. I just don't have the energy or the money to try to get
the exposure Cast needs or to find the readers we want. As you know,
it's been an uphill battle for five years and I feel it's time to move

on and try different things.

While I had intended for Cast's main arc to last around 18 issues, I
think issue 12 will be a good end point. The series was originally
only supposed to be 12 issues anyway, with the story just growing as I

went along (issues 7 to 11 not being part of my original story
bible). While I didn't get to do a lot of storylines I had in mind,
issue 12 will give closure to most of our main plotlines, though not
total closure.

I'd like to thank all the readers who stuck with us these past few
years, through artist changes, delays and other troubles. Those who
subscribed, we will refund the cost of the undelivered issues when we
deliver Cast 12 to your home.

Is this the end of Cast? I wouldn't bet on it. While the ongoing
series will stop, we have plans for some Cast related projects in the
near future. According to Arnold, he gave a few hints to some fans
who met up with him at the recent Komikon. So don't count Will and
the gang out yet. As always, I'll keep you informed.

But for the meantime, we're all gearing up for the big finale that
will conclude this run of Cast. Thanks again for all the support and
I apologize for the long wait. I promise that we're going to go out
with a bang.

Best,

Jamie B.

The LJ comm will stay indefinitely for now, no matter what happens.

EK 8 )

Here's my copy of the cover for Issue 12.

Now, according to Sir Jamie, nothing even close to a wrestling match actually occurs inside the issue. ^^v But rather dramatic things do happen. That's all I know for now. Oh, Arnold Arre did this cover. (I'm reading through The Mythology Class right now. Incredible as it may be to believe, Mr. Arre's work for Cast is BETTER than even those for that graphic novel.)

As for them taking this LONG, Sir Jamie said that they would rather be late than be sloppy. After all, people won't remember that an issue was late, but it will be remembered if the issue was bad.

Expect the big issue some time in August.

EK 8 )

CAST at Powerbooks Megamall

It was a simple thing, but it was enjoyable. Mr. Jamie Bautista, rather all by his lonesome because the artists had previous engagements, singlehandedly discussed Cast. Some highlights of his discussion:

- Cast is currently the longest running Filipino comic in the last 10 years, now at 12 issues in 4 years. In a komiks industry where the upstart anthologies release 1-5 issues then die, that's saying a lot.
- All the kids of Cast are roughly based on real-life people, who are thus credited in their names. For instance, Cecille Rhea Cheng is named so because her looks are derived from a high school friend named Ces, and her personality is taken from Jamie's wife Rhea.
- The writing process is longer that most people think.
- Even the scenes that eventually get cut out are important to the overall thinking process that makes the story great.
- Details and research count, more than you think. The several kissing scenes in the series have been researched for believability, really.
- Place clinchers (called buttons: catchy lines or art) at the end of each page as much as possible.
- Trusting your artists helps a lot!

He gave us a few pictures of the upcoming completed panels. Mons will get a LOT of airtime in the coming issue, that much is certain. Issue 12, as mentioned, will have 2 major stories. Arnold Arre is completing the story dealing with Will and Ces (that has a lot of Mons). Jhomar Soriano is responsible for the Joe/Lel/"Joy" story.

They also gave away a few HeroTV loot bags and several posters based on the Cast covers. I went home with a poster based on issue 07.

2 pictures under the cut:

This is a picture of all the existing Cast issues (sorry 04 was covered), and the raffle fishbowl. ^^

This is a (rather blurry) picture of Sir Jamie talking about Will and Lel.

I'll post my copy of the picture of Issue 12's cover (in a word: catfight!) in a few days.

EK 8 )

Mr. Bautista answers a few questions...

The CAST, erm, cast, erm team, will have their event at Powerbooks Megamall on July 28, 2007 at 2:30pm. Things still have to worked out about it, though. What is certain is that there will be a panel discussion about the series, conducted by the author and the artists.

To whet your appetites, I asked a few questions that I hoped the group would answer during the panel discussion that they have in mind. Here behind the LJ-cut are Jamie Bautista's email responses to the questions. VERY interesting answers, I might say.

1. Will the series ever be adapted for TV or a movie? (I do know the answer to this, but other people might want to know. ^^)

Most likely no. The way local series work and the current viewership (which is class CD), I don't think local stations will do Cast justice. Local demands would force them to cater to a broad audience, take out a lot of what makes Cast unique, and turn it into a generic soap opera. I'd probably only agree if a foreign station offered, and the likelihood of that is infinitesimally small. :-)

2. What do you think is your impact on komiks (that is, the local comics industy)?

I'd like to think that Cast has impacted the local industry in various ways:

1) Exploring other genres - While most publishers stick to the "tried and true" genres of fantasy, sci-fi, superheroes, and other speculative fiction in order to sell, I think Cast (and Nautilus Comics' other two books, the Siglo books) is helping to diversify the industry by tackling the realism genres like romantic comedy, drama and historical fiction. Our books also aim to reach non-comic readers who may not be fans of power fantasies and such. Notice how even the "Arthurian scenes" don't show anything fantastic. They're often people talking or fighting or such. The closest was Merlin in issue 1 who only talked about spells. :-)

2) Consistency - While it does seem like it takes ages for an issue of Cast to come out, and our track record is depressing slow compared to foreign titles, Cast is probably the most consistent local release of the last decade. While other titles like Culture Crash have reached a few issues more than us (around 14 I think, compared to our 13 when Cast 12 comes out), those titles were mostly anthology series, with short 8-page stories coming out in 3 or four issues of the series. When you put together all of the Cast story pages (including our back-ups, which are part of the Cast story), by Cast 12 we'll have a whopping 420 pages of story! That would make Cast probably the longest running long-form comic (meaning, not counting comic strips like Pugad Baboy or Beerkada) in this decade. The only one with more output would be Cast artist Arnold Arre, whose Mythology Class hits 300+ pages, After Eden and Andong Agimat with over 200 page each. The guy is a machine, and I'm so glad he's on my side. :-) Cast is one of the few local series that isn't an anthology, so I think the amount of work my artists, Elbert and I did to build this one gigantic story should show people that given enough effort, discipline and passion, we can come up with more ongoing series and not just be stuck with a lot of short-run stories.

3) Writing - I'd like to think that my writing style is very different from other local authors. I try to not rely on "being Filipino" to make my story stand out. I believe the story should just be a good story based on universal literary standards. I don't believe we comic creators should rely on the "Philippine made" crutch to sell their stories to Filipinos (or any other reader). To say something is the "Filipino version" of something can often mean a writer is using on genre formulas and only relying on very explicit Filipino elements (e.g. "They speak Tagalog!" or "It's set in Tagaytay!" or "They eat kare-kare!") to make themselves different from everything else out there. You'll notice it's why I never specify what country Cast is set, I or use explicit terms like "pesos" or show Philippine flags in the school. I want the Filipino aspect to come out naturally, in the values, the way people act and think, and natural storytelling sensibilities. Elbert and I don't agree on this, and you'll notice the stories he writes often mentions Filipino things and locales, which bug me (mainly because you can replace those with any other local and item and it doesn't change the story). I believe Cast should feel Filipino, and not say (or in the case of others, scream) that it is Filipino. But I don't know if any other writers share or notice that, so I have no idea if it has had any impact. I do know Arnold agrees with me, since he did the same thing in After Eden.

I also tend to rely on witty dialogue and characterization to move a story, rather than art or action. It's really more like play writing or a TV sit-com, which is not what many local comic creators do. Again, I don't know if that has had an impact. It'll all depend on future creators and whether anyone is influenced by Cast. :-)

3. Could you compare the teenagers of Generation X (the '90s) against the teenagers of the digital age (the 2K kids of right now), based on experience as a 90's kid and a teacher of the current generation? (wow, lalim...)

Interesting question! This was something I think posed a problem for me since the Cast teens really do act more like Gen Xers than Gen Y and above. I think the main difference is the lack of interconnectivity of the Gen X kids compared to today's teens. Our social adventures seemed to me to be more scary and exciting. When I compare them to my brother's experiences (he's 11 years younger than me), a lot of the details are different, but the core themes are the same: unrequited loves, shyness, finding identity, etc. But I think things like texting, YM, blogs and such have made info about other people easier to get and facing people seem less scary but also less exciting in digital form. Wondering what's up with someone is no big hurdle when you're talking about a blogger, who posts all the major details about them. Heart to heart talks can now be emailed or YMed, where you can actually stop and think about what you say before sending your reply, unlike a real face-to-face. It may be easier for real kids now, but from a story standpoint, it's less interesting (for example, could you imagine Lel and Will's talk being done via YM? For one, any physical actions would be lost. So I tend to downplay the tech and digital aspect in Cast. My explanation is that these are theater people, who I noticed act differently from typical teens (at least that was the case when I was a theater teen. :-P), so they prefer a less digital approach to relationships. Also, I don't want to make Cast look dated 10 years from now when the technology will be different and teen dynamics will change yet again. I like to focus on universal relationship themes.

One example of something I wanted to put in but couldn't was Mons giving Will advice on how to get someone's phone number (which is something my real friend Mons told me back in high school). She said to keep a lot of receipts in your wallet and to write it down there when you ask a girl for her number. That way, you don't look desperate having your address book with you. It looks like you just have a lot of scratch paper. Of course, with cell phones now, that tip is no longer applicable. Again, much easier but less funny.

4. Um, why Camelot, and not, say, Romeo and Juliet?
^^;

The main reason is that Camelot was the play I was in back in high school. :-)

Also, Camelot had the love triangle aspect which was the springboard for the whole series. The series came out from the idea of actors trying to avoid living out the play they were doing. In high school, I played Lancelot and like him I was the new kid in the group since everyone else had been together previous plays. The same thing happened in another play I joined the year after in St. Paul's Pasig. Both times, my friend Manny served as my mentor and partner there. In the first play, he had something going on with Ces, who played our Guenevere. I also found Ces really cute, but I never did anything about it because I knew Manny liked her and I knew that in the play, Lancelot going after Guenevere caused the fall of Camelot. Cast grew out of the idea of "What if I did go after Ces?" Of course, the ideal development of their relationship would be just like my own real relationship, so Ces' personality and a lot of how Ces and Will relate to each other is based on how I met my wife. :-)

Camelot also is about people working for a higher ideal, for a greater goal. I felt this fit in with the ensemble story of Cast, and it allowed for more themes to be explored: the love of art, friendship, etc. Romeo and Juliet is basically about romance and about two people, and Cast is not just about romance nor about just Will and Ces. Plus, all the other mythology about Arthur and Camelot could be used (like the Lady Elaine story) even if it wasn't in the play. Romeo and Juliet is just...Romeo and Juliet. There's no bigger mythology around it.

5. Besides Will, who are your favorite characters (and for that matter, those of the illustrators')?

Of course Will, Ces and Lel are my favorites since they are the leads. But what few readers know (and what you'll all see in issue 12) is that Joe is also representative of me. He's like my darker, more selfish side. It doesn't make him my favorite, though. I just understand him better than other characters. :-)

My favorite character though outside the main protagonists, surprisingly is Janina. You can tell because I don't really get much reader reaction to Janina's story, but I keep putting it in whenever I can. I feel that she's the character I love and nobody else does. :-) I love her situation in that she's torn between her relationship and her passion for the play. I love how she fights Mons over the importance of people vs. the importance of the play (when really, they both love the play but have different ways of showing it). I love the fact that she will stand up for anyone who is being abused because she was abused herself, and she'll do not by just being a shoulder to cry on (which is what Ces would do) but by hatching some crazy scheme that may sometimes backfire. If I just didn't need all the space for the main storylines (Will-Ces-Manny and Lel-Joe), I'd really try to give Janina more screen time (or page time). That's why my two favorite back ups I did both feature her. :-)

Arnold and Jhomar, like most of our readers, have an almost unhealthy love of Mons. When I originally asked Arnold which half of issue 12 he wanted to do, he said, "Whichever one Mons is in." Jhomar once did a Mons pin-up just for fun (though he hasn't shown it to me yet). I think the reason Mons is so popular is because her personality is based 100% on my good friend Amanda, who is just larger than life. Mons is named after my friend from high school, but her personality is 100% Amanda. All the stuff she says and does to Will, Amanda has done to me. :-) Some of the talks they have are copied verbatim from talks we had seven years ago.

Though Arnold has also told me Elmo is slowly becoming one of his favorites after issue 11. Yes, he like tough, bad-asses. :-)

6. Will you be releasing a compiled version of the series someday?

Maybe, but not for a long time, and probably not locally. As a comic collector, I know that if there's the promise a story will be collected in trade paperback form, people will be less likely to buy the individual issues. And since the early issues are still available and not exactly selling out, there's really no reason to collect them. Also, it's just too darn expensive to print a full color book. I'd rather use the money to print new Cast issues or a new series...or maybe revamp the earlier issues like this...

I'll post more news once they send them over.

EK 8 )

Issue 12 updates!

Finally, some word about the big issue 12. ^^v

I know issue 12 was supposed to come out last month, but it
didn't and it was all my fault. I haven't finished the script. This
double-sized issue has proved to be a whole lot tougher than I
expected. We've also managed to work out a special launch event for
issue 12, so we moved the release to prepare for this event as well.

Thus, issue 12 is planned to be released on July 28, Saturday (the
weekend after Harry Potter is released) at Powerbooks (which branch
exactly and what time, we'll announce shortly). Series artists
Arnold Arre and Jhomar Soriano will most likely be there, and of
course I'll be around. :-) We'll have some special activities like
mini-contests, behind-the-scenes discussions, autograph signings and
the chance to win special Cast memorabilia (like a special
autographed Cast 12 cover poster). If you or any of the readers of
your LJ are available that day, it'd be great to see you there on the
28th. Powerbooks will be the first place Cast 12, the finale of act
2, will be available.

Do show your support on that day, okay? I'll post it here when I hear from Sir Jamie again.

EK 8 )

Now that I have my own copy of issue 11, which means everyone who is in Manila should have it already, I can tell this little bit of trivia:

Arnold and Cynthia, in the advertising comic "Fellow Fans" at the back of Issue 11, are Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Arre, as drawn by Mr. Arre himself. ^^v

Also in Issue 11, this LJ comm gets officially plugged by Mr. Bautista! Yay! Thanks.

CAST has officially been plugged on HeroTV, hehe. Yay, more readers. And you'd have NO idea how complicated CAST is getting from the simple blurb premise of a group of students from 2 schools mounting a musical play.

BTW I have plans to start building a wikipedia entry for CAST, once things calm down a bit for me (probably after the big issue 12 comes out). If anyone wants to help, even with suggestions and information, just tell me.

That's enough for now.
From Jamie Bautista:

"Here's another scoop from us in case you feel like updating your Cast
LJ. :-) First of all, Cast 11 is at the printers this week so look
for it on the shelves soon!

So if you're like me and have been lingering around magazine shop shelves...wait just a little bit longer and keep lingering. ^^v

Below is a picture of the cover for issue 11, so you know what to look for:

Lel looking pretty. ^^v

If you're interested in also getting an early look at the back of the issue (a funny little ad comic, much like the one that had Mons, this time with Grip), send a comment here with your email and I'll send it to you.

EK 8 )

News on CAST 11 and 12

Official word from Jamie Bautista:

"As you probably noticed, Cast 11 is late. It's my fault. I took a
bit too much time writing the script due to other projects and
commitments. But I handed the script to Arnold Arre a few weeks ago
so we should have the issue out by the end of January.

To make up for it, we're aiming to get issue 12 out one month later,
by the end of February. This will be a double issue (with two main
stories) so it'll be like two issues out, but at the same price of P70.

Thanks to all the readers who have been waiting so patiently for our
next issue and I apologize for the lateness. It's my New Year's
resolution to get my writing done sooner. Happy New Year to all!"

EK 8 )

Hey guys!

I'm absolutely no good with drawing (unlike you guys, ~bow, bow~), but I can make a drabble or two when I'm in the mood, so just to get some activity going here, I'd like you to do the following:

1. Give me a name of a Cast character.
2. Give me a little scenario.
3. (Using what I know so far of the story) I'll TRY to make a little drabble (a VERY short story or dialogue)out of it.

Here's a sample of what I can do (a fanfic drabble for Samurai 7) http://community.livejournal.com/samurai_8/13554.html and http://community.livejournal.com/samurai_8/4177.html

EK 8 )

My thanks for the people who joined in. ^^v

I have a question I've been wanting to ask, but I don't know enough to start it. Now that I have a few people, I'm going to ask:

If CAST were made into a live-action drama or movie, who would play who? (solid kapuso or kapamilya or mixed lineup, doesn't matter)

EK 8 )

CAST in Candy

CAST has been plugged in the November issue of Candy magazine. A very nice summary, I might add:

"...When Will Flores decides to join a theater organization in an all-girls school, his life becomes anything but ordinary. First, he has to fight the frat boys led by Step, wo wants to get his ex-girlfriend Mons back by wrecking thier play production. Then there's Ces Cheng, his ultimate crush. Since Ces is already dating fellow actor Manny David, Will thinks it best to hide his feelings for the sake of the production and their friendship. Join the whole cast in one roller-coaster ride as they struggle with the frat boys and their love lives -- along with saving their production from destruction!"

The little pics of Issues 7, 8, and 9 has me sobbing that I still haven't managed to get Issue 9. ^^; It's the most easily sold out. ^^v

EK 8 )
