Structural Aircraft Assembler (SAA) Training Program

In partnership with the Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Association of Ontario, MHI Canada Aerospace, Inc. and The Career Foundation, we are proud to offer a hands-on training opportunity for individuals interested in launching a career in aerospace manufacturing.

Program Details

The program offers two pathways. 

The Structural Assembler I pathway is a 9-week program that begins with one week of online Job Readiness and Health & Safety training, followed by eight weeks of paid, hands-on technical instruction at MHICA, including two weeks at their Mississauga facility. 

The Structural Assembler II pathway is a 3-week program with one week of online Job Readiness and Health & Safety training and two weeks of paid, hands-on training at MHICA’s Mississauga facility. 

Upon successful completion of either pathway, you will be ready to begin your career as a Structural Assembler I or Structural Assembler II with MHI Canada Aerospace.

Hours of Work:

Monday to Thursday, a 4-day workweek with 10-hour shifts: the morning shift runs from 5:00 AM to 3:30 PM, and the afternoon shift runs from 1:00 PM to 11:30 PM.

Salary:

  • Structural Assembler I
    $20.40 per hour | $22.67 at the end of the 8-week training
  • Structural Assembler II
    $27.20 per hour at the end of the 3-week training

As a Structural Assembler, you will learn to:

  • Read and interpret blueprints to understand aircraft structures and component placement.
  • Lay out and prepare holes, including techniques like countersinking and deburring, to ensure precision and quality.
  • Fit and install fasteners, including conventional rivets and Hi-Lite fasteners, to assemble structural components.
  • Assemble pre-fabricated parts into subassemblies, both at workbenches and directly on aircraft structures.
  • Apply surface treatments, such as manual solvent cleaning, conductive chemical conversion, and paint touch-ups.
  • Use a variety of tools, including power and hand tools, jigs, and fixtures, to complete assembly tasks accurately and safely.
  • Meet production goals by working efficiently and maintaining high standards of quality.
  • Collaborate with your team, demonstrating flexibility, a willingness to learn, and a strong work ethic.
  • Adapt to rotating shifts, including days, afternoons, nights, and overtime, to support production needs.
  • Develop mechanical skills, including the safe and effective use of air and power hand tools.

To Succeed in this role, you must be able to:

  • Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times. 
  • Pass a Pulmonary Fit Test (PFT)
  • Employees using respirators must be clean-shaven at all times.
  • Meet physical demands of the job, including the ability to:
    • Work in confined or restricted spaces (e.g., tanks)
    • Work at heights (e.g., 3rd floor of jigs) 
    • Lift up to 40 lbs as needed
    • Stand for extended periods, typically 9 hours of a 10-hour shift
    • Bend, twist, walk on uneven surfaces, climb stairs repeatedly
  • Maintain high energy, agility, and a willingness to take on physically demanding tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Program Requirements for all Candidates:

Employees who have gone on to succeed at MHI Canada Aerospace often bring the
following skills and experiences:

  • Have completed Grade 12
  • 1–4 years of experience in aircraft assembly
  • Experience with hand/power tools for drilling, countersinking, torquing, and installing fasteners
  • Ability to read and interpret 2D and 3D technical drawings
  • Experience in aerospace or manufacturing environments
  • Committed to working full-time hours
  • Be within a commutable distance
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check
