It was mid-day and Mal was walking to the bridge to check on Sadie when he hears soft crying from the engine room. His face reads concern and he turns to walk inside. He stops at the door and looks to his left and finds Kaylee. She was laying in her hammock and she was crying.
He steps inside and kneels down next to her. "Hey there Kaylee, what's the matter?" he asks softly.
She sniffles. "Simon." she said simply not looking at him. "Simon happened, Cap'n."
He blinks at her. "What he do, mei mei? Tell me."
She still doesn't look him in the face, but down at her hands. "We made love last night." she whispered. "It was so nice, so loving, so-"
Mal stops her and pats her softly on the arm with a warm smile. "Spare me as many details as possible, k, Kaylee?"
She gives a smile and nods. "And than, this mornin' when I met him in that nexus cafe place, he told me it was over. That there wasn't much there anyway and that I should forget about it. Said we both knew it would never work out."
She starts to cry again and Mal pulls her into a hug. She sniffles against his chest. "Said that I was a great girl, but he didn' think it would work. And I asked him about......about last night....and he said it didn't matter." She starts to cry harder. "I told him I loved him last night, Cap'n and he said it didn' matter!"
Mal holds her close. "Shh...there, Kaylee." he says softly. "It ain't your fault that the gorram doctor is a son of a bitch." he states.
Kaylee nods. "Don' make it any easier, Cap'n." she states softly.
He nods. "I am sorry, Kaylee. I wish there is somethin' I could-" he paused as if an idea struck him.
Kaylee looked up at her Captain. "What?"
He turns and gives her a warm smile and kisses the top of her head. "Don' you worry none." he states standing up. "I will take care of it."
She gives him a confused look. "Take care of what?"
"Don' think the Doctor and River will be stayin' with a us much longer." he says walking to the door.
She blinks. "No. It's ok. Really." she says softly.
Mal spins to her. "No. It's not." he states before turning and leaving the engine room. He headed towards the infirmary as Kaylee curled up in her hammock as her world came crashing down.
