Getting Started

The purpose of this page is to provide guidance and resources for Myomatrix users. The examples of implantation protocols and other resources listed below come from procedures utilized in the Sober lab (at Emory University) and in collaborators' labs for recording single unit and bulk EMG from rodents, songbirds and primates. Note that CAMBER is unable to advise individual users on general surgical protocols (suturing, sterile technique) or basic electrophysiological methods (configuring or de-noising amplifiers and data-processing systems).

The CAMBER staff are available for discussing array designs that will best suit your experiments, for advising on surgical methods related to implanting the arrays, and/or for guiding data acquisition system choices. If you are a new Myomatrix user, we strongly suggest requesting a consultation. Consultations are ~30 minutes conversations over Zoom and can be scheduled using the link below.

Verify Myomatrix array sizing
One can evaluate whether or not an array will reach the target muscle when the connector is mounted to the animal using this

Complete the Material Transfer Agreement
The Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) sets up a legal agreement between the user's institution and Emory University and must be signed by the user and the institution's authorized signatory. The payment MTA must be completed prior to requesting arrays, EVEN IF you have had an MTA in place prior to Jan 2026.

Requesting Myomatrix Arrays
Thanks to the generous funding from the NIH Brain Initiative U24 program, CAMBER has distributed hundreds of arrays to the global neuroscience community at no cost to the user. As of January 2026, CAMBER has transitioned to a payment model to ensure the sustainability of this neurotechnology. Navigate to the How to Obtain Myomatrix arrays page for additional information.
If you want to request the one-threaded Myomatrix arrays designed for human subjects and non-human primate research, these arrays are not yet available for purchase. You can request these designs using this specific form: https://wkf.ms/3s6Yfbd.

Using the Myomatrix Arrays
Equipment suggestions
Consult the
Tools and Hardware list to ensure you have the appropriate equipment and electronics to use the Myomatrix arrays.
Impedance testing
Testing impedance of the electrode contacts prior ot implantation is critical.
READ more about why it is important and how to test impedance using either Intan Technologies or Open Ephys acquisition systems. Other data acquisition systems will have their own specific software for impedance testing.

Array implantation protocols
These protocols describe typical array implantation procedures for acute recordings in Rhesus macaque biceps or for chronic recordings in mouse forelimb muscles.
Review surgical videos and protocols
The CAMBER team has created videos demonstrating implantation of arrays in songbirds, mouse and non-human primates and sample IACUC protocols for array use in these species. Access to these materials is restricted to current Myomatrix array users. Email the CAMBER team at
