Ligo Haibun Challenge – Illusion

I looked at the vast beach below. Sparkling in green, the water took in the joy of the land, reflecting the crowd of happy faces. Children ran with balloons, anxious mothers watched them while quiet toddlers built castles in the sand. Lovers sat behind trees, gazing into the each other’s eyes, the music of sea between them. The waves watched everything and glistened with their happiness.

I looked at the green walls in my well-furnished office and shuddered at the barren land below. My colleague typed away in his mechanical style, oblivious to the maddening silence.

Picture it & Write – Phil and the Glass

ermilia_pic&write

“Why didn’t you tell me all of it?” asked Jessica, coldly.

“All of what?” asked Phil, as they walked to the beach.

“You didn’t clarify that your family property is to be donated to charities and you are not going to inherit anything.”

“How does it matter? I am an accountant and have a regular salary..” said Phil.

Jessica tried to swallow her disappointment as she looked at the floor. Then, she took a deep breath.

“Phil, I am sorry. I cannot marry you.”

“Why, is it….”

“No, it is not the money. I feel that you have not been honest with me.  You misled me. This is  not what I am looking for.”

“Jessica..”

“Goodbye, Phil.”

Phil stared after her. He was surprised that relief was his uppermost feeling. He looked at the glass beside him. The glass looked empty and unattractive without the wine. But, it was in peace as it reflected the sand and the sun. He felt like the glass.

Friday Fictioneers – Proposal

copyright-renee-heath

Phil was shocked. He had not expected this response from Jessica. She had always treated him with scorn. But, just now, when he proposed, she leapt up in the air, jumped on the table and danced with some waiters before running outside. Phil wiped his spectacles and slowly walked to the streets.

Jessica was now dancing on the streets. Amused bystanders stared at her. Phil smiled. He had not known that that he was so irresistible. Meanwhile, Jessica thought of what she had heard a while ago, about Phil’s family and their millions.

Alastair’s Photo Fiction – Flight Adventures

alastair_photo fiction

Paul Price was excited. A recently discharged fighter pilot, he did not expect to be employed so soon. And who would hire him, but the business tycoon, Lance Turner? His first duty was to fly Mr Turner, his family and secretary to Rome in a private jet. After a slow take-off, Paul was bored. The empty sky, silence and lack of action depressed him. Then, he realized that somebody was flying beside him. Ah! It was a huge eagle. He flew a little low, but the eagle quickly caught on. Then, Paul moved higher up and flew in a zigzag manner. The eagle looked impressed, but still followed him. Then, the flight embarked on a series of somersaults. At last, the eagle was nowhere to be found.

They had to land in Charlotte for fuel. So, Paul came out to inform his passengers. Lance Turner’s mother was fervently murmuring something, her hand on the rosary. Turner’s teenage son was looking ecstatic and his daughter was crying. The secretary, her spectacles on the floor, clutched her front seat with a glassy expression. Mr Turner was the only calm passenger. Now he addressed Paul with a cold precision.

“Mr Price, a word with you.”

Picture it & Write – Lady in Water

ermilia_pic&write

Sabina entered the antique shop and looked at the statue of a lady in the water. The statue lady gave herself to the water with abandon. She seemed comfortable with the idea of the cold water embracing her. Sabina had known that feeling. She had been a national swimming champion. It was not just the money and accolades, but also her love for swimming.

Then, her life had turned around. A small sprain had become a more complicated problem, bringing down the curtains on her career and international ambitions.

She noticed a couple of girls staring at her.

“Aren’t you Sabina Ray, the swimming champion?”

“People have often asked me that. I don’t even know who she is. I can’t swim for life.” said Sabina, with a forced laugh.

It is better not to revisit the past, she thought as she turned away.

The Urge – Alastair’s Photo Fiction

alastair photo fiction

Walter had a splitting headache. He wondered if he had left his medication in his cousin’s lab. Thankfully, he located his pouch in his cabin. He took a tablet and sighed. Walking over to the deck, Walter felt restless with the passing waves. He felt an inexplicable urge to jump in. His headache now gone, he felt edgy in the ship.

Ignoring the warning deep inside, he jumped into the sea. He swam with surprising ease and was conscious of a growing hunger. A fish shied at his sight and swam away. Walter looked down hungrily at the fish and raised his head to stare into the eyes of a whale. He was surprised that he could understand the whale’s language. Walter and the whale had the same goal. He vaguely remembered his cousin’s experiment and observing a pouch similar to his own in the lab. Those thoughts quickly forgotten, he raced with his competitor for the nearest shrimp.

Picture it & Write – The Holiday

floating-bed

“You have won the tour for two days and one night.” screamed the postcard and with it was a photo of a boat house and a floating bed.

“Imagine mom winning the contest!” said Francine.

“Come on, let us start packing.” said Felicia.

“But, just four people are allowed for the holiday.”

“You, I, Fred and one of our friends? Or maybe dad? Yes! That would be perfect.” said Felicia.

“What do you say, Fred?” they asked their brother, who was sitting, quietly.

“None of us are going. This trip is for mom and dad.” he said.

“What are you saying? Why not?”

“Francine, it was mom who won the contest. Why didn’t you think of including her in your list?”

“But, only four of us can go..”

“Why do you include ‘us’, btw? Haven’t they sacrificed many trips for us? I am tired of you both ignoring mom on any of the entertainment deals. Is that because she is outdated? She is the one who really needs and deserves it. Come on, let them both go. They need time alone.”

Fred looked at them, pleadingly, and they both slowly nodded.

Alastair’s Photo Fiction – Foothold

alastair photo fiction

He ran with the moving train, trying to get in. Luckily, he got a foothold, but was about to slip backwards when he saw an outstretched hand. He took her hand and eased himself into the first class. They spend the whole part of their journey looking at each other. The train was crowded the next day and she kept her books on the window-seat, holding it for him. She fought with school kids to retain it for him and angry passengers abused her. But, he always found his favourite seat unoccupied when he arrived.

Curious passengers always stared at them, trying to figure out their conversation. But, who can understand lovers, except lovers themselves?

She did not turn up one day. Nobody took the window seat, despite the crowd. They waited for him and he staggered to the compartment, looking stricken. But, he did not take the seat. He stood all the way to his station. He was never seen since then.
