Five Pauses in June
A few things that made me take a beat last month
“The pauses in our life make our experience full and meaningful. The well-known pianist Arthur Rubinstein was once asked, "How do you handle the notes as well as you do?" His response was immediate and passionate, "I handle notes no better than many others, but the pauses—ah! That is where the art resides." Like a rest note in a musical score, the pure stillness of a pause forms the background that lets the foreground take shape with clarity and freshness. The moment that arises out of the pause can, like the well-sounded note, reflect the genuineness, the wholeness, the truth of who we are.”
Here are a few moments I successfully paused on and truly enjoyed in June.
1. Walk Snacks
The raspberries were late this year, just a few weeks behind.
So when I started spotting these sweet red jewels peeking out from the bushes on my walks, it was such a thrill!
They’ll be starring in a raspberry galette this weekend.
2. Tiny beers in the afternoon shade
I had a delightful afternoon sipping half pints (my go-to beer size) at The Wedge in the River Arts District of Asheville.
You can still spot remnants of the flooding from Hurricane Helene, with water marks lingering on the sides of buildings, but it was so nice to see the area making it's way back.
Folks are still filling all the breweries, and laughing, and enjoying the summer up here.
Just before we left, I snapped this picture of our empty glasses. They cast these beautiful shadows under the shade.
A sweet little reminder of a lovely afternoon in June.
3. These words
The World I Live In
I have refused to live
locked in the orderly house of
reasons and proofs.
The world I live in and believe in
is wider than that. And anyway,
what's wrong with Maybe?
You wouldn't believe what once or
twice I have seen. I'll just
tell you this:
only if there are angels in your head will
you ever, possibly, see one.
-Mary Oliver
4. Peaches on the go
Fresh fruit delivery!
How charming it is to see delicate peaches strapped in and flying down I-26, destined to bring some sweetness to someone's summer day.
5. This lil’ guy
Making his way across my dirty windows.
I wonder what it feels like to be the most beloved of all the spiders?
Did anything give you pause last month?
Much love,
Cait

Picking snap peas straight off the vine in my backyard and enjoying their sweet, crunchy texture while slowly drifting on the tree swing in the afternoon shade.
Love the Mary Oliver poem. I went on a hike recently and reveled in all of the macadamia nuts that were ripe on the trees. Cracking them open with a rock and eating them fresh is the best small luxury!
