While administration is a well-known driver of physician burnout, few studies or conversations have distinguished the clinical administrative tasks from the non-clinical ones. Most conversations focus on the clinical side, leaving the equally demanding non-clinical responsibilities largely overlooked.
📑 Our latest study, Hiding in Plain Sight: The Impact of Non-Clinical Administrative Demand on Canada’s Physicians, is the first in Canada to focus exclusively on non-clinical administrative work like billing, bookkeeping, insurance forms, and committee responsibilities that often go unrecognized in research about physician burnout.
📊 Drawing on data from nearly 500 physicians across Canada, the study reveals that non-clinical tasks alone consume an average of 7.5 hours each week - nearly a full working day, contributing directly to fatigue, stress, and reduced time for patient care.
💡 Our findings point to clear opportunities for change: simplifying billing processes, improving integration across clinical and administrative systems, and exploring the role of artificial intelligence in automating repetitive tasks.
