Character Information
General
Canon Source: One Piece
Canon Format: Manga
Character's Name: Marco; also known as “Marco the Phoenix”
Character's Age: Never stated, though he looks to be in his 40s.
What form will your character's NV take? A simple slide-open touch-screen phone. Text and video messages will be displayed on-screen, a keypad being available for Marco to reply with. It will work like a regular phone for audio messages, and any received hologram images will be projected above the screen’s surface. And yes, being touch-screen, there will occasionally be pocket dialing.
Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities:
Marco has consumed an (as-of-yet) unnamed Zoan-type Devil Fruit which, as a slight inconvenience, has rendered him unable to swim in the ocean. Even being partially submerged in a body of water will weaken him, as will coming into contact with Seastone (which emits the same energy as the sea). However, the abilities he’s been granted in exchange are quite worth the trade-off: Marco ate a mythical fruit that enables him to transform into a phoenix of blue flames at will. Like all Zoan users, he has a hybrid human/beast form, but unlike most other users he can pick and choose specific parts of his body to transform. For example, Marco can retain his human form, yet change his arms into wings in order to allow himself to fly.
Another ability granted to him by the fruit was its impressive regenerative properties. Marco is nearly impossible to dish out lasting harm to; if he is in his phoenix form, any damage he receives is simply regenerated instantly. He can literally be pierced by multiple lasers and be perfectly fine the next moment. There is a limit to how much he can regenerate, though that limit has not yet been revealed. Since he recovers damage using his flames, though, Marco is more vulnerable while in his human form. He’s quite capable of handling damage even as a human, however, and has been shown to be able to stay standing on his feet after being pierced through the chest while unable to heal himself.
Although he is capable of summoning flames alone rather than needing to transform part of his body into his phoenix form, those flames are not hot. They can't burn anything or start a fire; they are simply what heals Marco's wounds. The flames also don't turn him intangible like a logia user's ability would. As such, others can still use physical attacks on him.
Another ability that deserves mentioning is Marco’s Haki, a skill that allows Marco to temporarily nullify Devil Fruit powers when he lands hits on the users, including the normally-intangible Logia-type users.
Marco is also impressively strong even without his other powers. He can send large, powerful foes flying quite the distance with a single kick, so he's quite capable in close-quarters combat. Also worth noting is that, while being subjected to Seastone so that his regenerative powers were canceled out, Marco was shot through his chest twice and still had the power and stamina to keep moving on his feet. Even partially disabled, he's still quite an opponent to take on.
Weapons:
While he doesn’t carry any extra weapons on his person, Marco can always change his legs into taloned feet if the need for something sharp arises.
History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History:
Not much is explained about Marco’s past; about the only thing really known about him pre-series is that he has been part of Whitebeard’s crew for at least twenty years.
Here is a link to his in-series history.
Point in Canon:
Chapter 580.
Character Personality:
Much as his sleepy-eyed appearance hints at, Marco is a rather calm, laid-back man. With plenty of experience on his side, he doesn’t get worked up easily. He’s the kind of guy that will take everything in stride, not worrying when there seems to be a problem; he’s been around for a while, so he knows when something is really a threat and when he can just shrug it off. Even in the midst of battle, he’s capable of remaining level-headed enough to recognize good advice.
That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have a sense of humour. On the contrary he can be quite playful, even in the middle of a fight. He’ll do a bit of good-natured teasing, maybe throw in a dash of sarcasm, but that’s only if you’re on his good side. If he doesn’t like someone, he’s likely to call them out on being full of crap if they try to joke around with him.
Marco is fiercely loyal. He’s been by Whitebeard’s side for at least twenty years, and he’s both happy and proud to be called one of the man’s sons. Marco won’t hesitate to move on behalf of his pops or one of his other adoptive sons, since Whitebeard’s entire crew has become his family.
And of course, this pirate is confident, though not to the point of being cocky. He’s got reason to be; he’s physically strong even without the added abilities of his Devil Fruit. Because of this confidence, though, Marco won’t be an easy one to intimidate, and it’s quite likely that he won’t feel the need to be polite to someone when he doesn’t want to be, even if that someone has a reputation of being strong.
That confidence can come back to bite him, however. If something happens to a member of his family, he’ll lose his cool in one way or another, be it rage or worry. In either case he’ll lose focus; in one instance, he even turned his back on a powerful opponent, a mistake that severely cost him later on.
Overall, Marco is a strong-willed person capable of deeply caring for others. He isn’t the type to try antagonizing others without reason. Just don’t mess with his family.
Marco also has a verbal tic, and will sometimes tack on the word “yoi” to the ends of his sentences. (I’ve yet to find a translation of that word that actually makes sense...)
Character Plans:
Marco’s top priority will be keeping an eye on Ace and Luffy, once he’s aware that the two of them are also within Siren’s Port. Ace is his nakamaeven if the little brat denies it since he’s from an earlier point in canon and Marco received a direct order to not let Luffy die, and he has no intention of letting anything serious happen to the kid.
He’ll also have nothing to do with either of the factions running the island. He’s proud to be a member of the Whitebeard Pirates and won’t be affiliating himself with anyone else, thanks. Marco will simply wait and bide his time, making a neutral living in the city until a way off the island is available.
Also, a run-in with Non at some point might be fun.
