It's been a while since I posted anything in here. Over the last few months, most of what I've been making has been either sigtags for comms I'm in or icons for icontests.

I've made two wallpapers in the interim, though. I've just had a major creativity block, but hopefully that's over with now.

These are just some random icons... Four of them have a sort of theme going on, which I'll explain inside the cut, one's just a random icon I made for myself, and the other five are Cedric Diggory (whose death made me cry). Oh, and #9 isn't a base, I just couldn't think of any text to put on it.

These are because when I posted the results of a sorting quiz in my personal LJ, (I'd never taken a sorting quiz before), cherryscott said that every time she sees the Hufflepuff crest, she thinks of the Eddie Izzard joke about poking badgers with spoons. So I made those icons. :)

I got the idea for these from gwyddfid's text-only Eddie Izzard icons, which I absolutely love. These are just some quotes from Andromeda on textured backgrounds. All brush credit is on my userinfo.

Jesus CHRIST it's been forever since I updated in here. I have made other stuff, but not posted it in here. It's all Crossfade related and all posted in dead_skin@gj.com.

These icons are of Ryan Jordan, the frontman from Greenwheel. I've made icons of him before, just not in a long while. I saw his band perform on 7/14 and decided to make some more icons. Some of these are revamped versions of old icons. All lyrics are from Greenwheel songs. I also took the photos for 85-93 myself on 7/14 in Chicago.

I made a colorbar. I've never really seen the point of them, but I do remember how they got started. I just don't understand why everyone uses the rainbow when they're making them. *eyeroll*

My first icon tutorial!

This is my first icon tutorial, so please bear with me. It's for PSP8, involves a lot of layers, and assumes a basic knowledge of PSP8 and how to use layers. Essentially, I was just screwing around with PSP tonight and came up with something I liked.

To make this icon:

1. We start off with the original photo. I chose this old picture of Christopher Hall from Stabbing Westward. I think it's a little too dark for my purposes, so I go to ADJUST > BRIGHTNESS & CONTRAST > BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST. I choose the default factory setting and set the brightness to 60 and leave the contrast at 0.

My image now looks like this:

2. I choose my crop tool () and choose which part of Christopher I want to iconize. Because I plan on using text, I go for the left side of his face, cropping the image down to 135*135. I then resize it to 100*100, giving me this:

3. I duplicate the layer and desaturate it by 50%, then set it to soft light.

Not much of a difference, but it turns out that I needed it later.

4. I played around with gradients until I found one I liked, (I can't remember where I got it, but I have credit for gradients on my userinfo). I pasted it as a new layer on top of everything else and then played with my layer properties. I settled on dodge, since it didn't obscure Christopher's face too much. I then dropped the opacity down to 50%.

5. I did the good old blue exclusion layer (#090B69), set to 65% opacity. However, this layer was put BETWEEN the soft light and dodge layers.

6. Just because I was bored, I threw in a purple exclusion layer (#5D045E), too. I didn't like the way the exclusion looked, so I set it to Saturation (L) and dropped the opacity down to 35%. Subtle, but I like it.

7. I love gradients. I absolutely love them. So I threw in a gradient that I made myself, setting it on a new layer to multiply at 70%. I made this gradient with #F81A44, #FDADDA, and #FFFEF5, from left to right. Under transparency, I set the opacity at 80% and location at 100%.

8. I chose another gradient (credit on my userinfo), pasted it as a new layer, and set this one to Saturation. This one I left at 100%.

9. Next I added a plain white (#FFFFFF) layer and set it to Color (L) at 36%.

10. I liked the way that looked, so I decided to add my text. I knew from the start that I was going to use a quote from Vertical Horizon // Give You Back. I created a new layer on top of everything else. I chose my fonts, using Onyx at 8pt for "i need to know if you are" and John Handy LET at 20pt for "real". I used all lower case letters and no special kerning or spacing. I entered each font as a different selection, though, using white (#FFFFFF) for the color of both selections. First I entered "real", just to know where I was putting the words. Then I pulled a color from Christopher's face using the dropper tool () and plugged that into a drop shadow effect. For drop shadow, I went EFFECTS > 3D EFFECTS > DROP SHADOW. I set my color as #BC999C, the color I pulled from Christopher's face. I set my vertical and horizontal each to 2.00, opacity to 75%, and blur to 2.00. Then I added "i need / to know / if you are" with carriage breaks in place of the slashes. I linked the layers once I got them where I wanted them and dropped the opacity down to 75%, leaving the layer property on normal.

11. By then, I was just about done, I just wanted to add a border and maybe one brush. I chose a border brush by crumblingwalls, using the same color that I used for the drop shadow on the text. I placed the brush on a new layer and left the opacity at 100% and the property at normal.

12. After scrolling through my brushes, I tried several different texture brushes by crumblingwalls. I set the brush on a new layer and used the same color that I used for the border and the drop shadow. The brush I chose was actually a bit of a fluke, since I mostly only liked it because part of it circled Christopher's eye. But when I tried it on a different layer property (Color (L)), that disappeared anyway. Once again, it's subtle and is almost entirely behind the text.

Yay! Like I said, this is my first tutorial. I'm also sure I'm probably the only one who likes it. :)
