Can't update stage views actor <unnamed> (regarding MetaWindowGroup, MetaWindowActorX11, MetaSurfaceActorX11)

Same issue w/ my system locking up for about 30 seconds to 1 minute each time it happens:

My system is running Pop! OS 22.04 - it's not Ubuntu, but it is based on it and I figured this would be useful.

I can consistently trigger this issue by installing the Google Chrome deb (Version 110.0.5481.177) and resizing the window. journalctl will get filled with these errors while resizing. I am unsure if this is a Google Chrome issue or a Gnome issue?

Confirm on ubuntu 23.04/X11 + Gnome 44

In my case it's not only on Chrome, resizing and moving any application can reproduce this issue in Ubuntu 23.04

Then this is causing significant instability in my system. Whether I'm using Ubuntu 20.04 or 22.04.

I've seen this in my logs too, QUITE a lot in fact

sudo journalctl --no-hostname --since "30 days ago" | grep "update stage views actor" | wc -l

gives me back: 221915

But as far as I can tell it doesn't have any effect (GNOME 44.0 certainly has its problems but I was getting it in 43.x too and even before that and it's not causing hangs or crashes). Intel i915 kernel driver and modesetting with X11.

The message is coming from gnome-shell, so I assume if you won't get it if you run a different DE - but are other DEs also unstable or are they fine?

Same issue, when switching Brave browser to Full Screen (F11). Also if just Maximizing Brave browser.

Also happens when Maximizing 'kitty' terminal. Gnome-terminal does not cause these errors.

So it seems to happen with specifically hardware accelerated applications.

Dear All,

  I tried to Install KDE Plasma using the following command:
  sudo apt install kde-plasma-desktop

  I went to Settings > Accessibility > Zoom
  I toggled the Desktop zoom switch off and on then off

  Then I did:
  sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3
  and chose gdm3 as the default Desktop Environment

  The problem was solved.

  Either the Zoom feature was the reason for the lag, or installing kde reset the settings to proper ones.

  This can be detected by uninstalling kde but I'm not planning to do this.

  So, you can try one of the approches and see if this solves it.
