Phone update: I'm still hoping that in 2 days, I can salvage something from my old phone, like photos and texts whose loss really does sting a bit. I'm more upset about no longer having those mementos than the phone itself, which was an admittedly crappy old phone. So to console myself, I went to Verizon yesterday and got the coolest phone I've ever had, a Samsung Glyde. Not nearly as amazing as the iPhone, of course, but it does have a touch screen with virtual keypad, an mp3 player, camera that can take photos or video, the ability to go on-line, send e-mails, text, etc., and one of those slide-out keyboards for texting (I've been jealous of people with this feature on their phones for a long time now.). I'm kind of gleefully psyched about it. I haven't had a nifty gadget like this since my first iPod, or my first Video iPod, and so it's still a novelty. Hey, I figured I deserved something nice after losing some personal things I was hoping to save forever. Fingers crossed I can maybe get some of those things back in 2 days or so.
Torchwood update: Yes, I do plan on finishing the season and reviewing the rest. I actually haven't gone on yet because I got stuck on From Out of the Rain, meaning "Got bored. Had trouble getting through the episode. Keep thinking about going back to it. But every time I try to continue it, my mind wanders again." Any particular reason I need to finish the episode, or can I just move on? It's a shame, too, because it has some plot elements I would usually love: creepy carnivals (ah, Carnivale, how I miss thee!) and people escaping from film into the real world.
Other TV update: In the meantime, I've been rewatching the first season of Dexter on my own, preparing for the release of the second season on DVD, which I still have not seen, so please do not spoil me. I haven't seen the first season since it originally aired, though, and man, it is just as awesome as I remembered it, and even cooler now that I know who the Ice Truck Killer is. Meanwhile, I'm rewatching Firefly with
bedlamblade. He's seen all of the show, but not Serenity (the BDM, that is, not the pilot), so this time, we're doing it right, going through the whole series and then the film. I haven't seen it in such a long time, and yes, it is also just as brilliant as I remembered it. From a filmic standpoint, I think Joss did some of his all-time best work on this show. I've also found a torrent file of the truly brilliant and canceled-too-early superhero/family drama, Now and Again, which was often confused at the time with the family drama, Once and Again.
Theatre update: For nearly a week now, Powder and I have been trying to get into the Shakespeare in the Park production of Hair. There just seems to be something so cool and perfect about the idea of seeing Hair outdoors, and in Central Park, no less. But apparently everyone in the City agrees, because we've entered the virtual line day after day and haven't won tickets yet. If we don't win soon, we might have to actually do the in-person line. But that means waking up at 6 AM to arrive by around 8 AM, and then waiting there in the heat till 1 PM. And then be totally wiped out by the time the show actually starts. I'm crossing my fingers now that we win tonight's on-line lottery. There's talk that this production will transfer to Broadway, but seeing it in indoors just won't be the same. Not to mention the fact that by that point, it would be Broadway prices and not, you know, FREE.
And I could not be more tickled by how awful everyone is saying Stephanie Meyer's newest book is. Right now, it's customer review rating at Amazon is 2 1/2 stars. Ouch.
