IUCN Paper: “We Are Nature: Nature-based Education For Planetary Health”

A new paper from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) explores how nature-based education can support planetary health by strengthening connections between people and the natural world.

The paper, “We are nature: nature-based education for planetary health”, presents NbE as an approach that places nature at the centre of learning, helping future generations tackle challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and water pollution and insecurity.

An example initiative in the paper is a "watershed curriculum" in schools where all subjects relate back to the local watershed's health and management.

The publication also examines challenges to implementation, including the need for stronger political commitment, updated educational frameworks, greener learning spaces and better support for educators.

The paper argues that recognizing the close relationship between humans and nature can help build healthier, more resilient and cohesive communities, while supporting environmental protection and long-term sustainability.
