WHO: Household Water Treatment Technology Evaluation Scheme

The World Health Organization (WHO) has published a new report presenting results from Rounds III and IV of its international Household Water Treatment Technology Evaluation Scheme.

The report outlines findings from WHO’s global programme to assess household water treatment products, which are independently tested against WHO health-based performance criteria and classified according to their ability to remove microbial contaminants from drinking water.

Household water treatment and safe storage remain an important public health intervention, particularly as nearly two billion people worldwide rely on drinking-water sources that are unimproved or contaminated. Unsafe water is also linked to hundreds of thousands of diarrhoeal deaths each year.

The results are intended to support UN Member States and UN agencies in identifying effective household water treatment technologies, and to inform national standards, regulation and procurement decisions aimed at protecting public health.
