Main Street Preps has named its 2023 All-Midstate baseball team.
See below for superlative honors and the first, second and third teams.
Player of the Year: Carson Rucker, Goodpasture, Sr.
Stats: .500 AVG, 59 R, 16 2B, 1 3B, 18 HR, 81 RBI, 33 SB
Pro scouts regularly stopped by Madison to see Rucker in action this season. He delivered with tape-measure home runs, speed on the basepaths and a smooth defensive transition from third base to shortstop. The Division II-A Mr. Baseball winner will suit up for Tennessee next year if an MLB team doesn’t pick him in the early rounds of this summer’s draft.
Pitcher of the Year: Eli Huddleston, Upperman, Sr.
Stats: 9-1 record, 0.60 ERA, 70.1 IP, 38 H, 6 ER, 8 BB, 106 K
The Bees weren’t able to match their 2022 Class 3A state title with another this year, instead falling to Greeneville in the championship game. But Huddleston was just as effective on the mound as a senior. The Tennessee Tech signee’s durability and strikeout-to-walk ratio made him the class of area hurlers.
Two-Way Player of the Year: Miller Green, Lipscomb Academy, Sr.
Batting stats: .406 AVG, 32 R, 10 2B, 5 HR, 43 RBI, 3 SB
Pitching stats: 7-0 record, 1.25 ERA, 56 IP, 29 H, 10 ER, 17 BB, 99 K
Green broke the hamate bone in his non-throwing hand during preseason practice and underwent surgery to remove it. You wouldn’t know that by looking at his production. The Georgia Tech signee was indispensable on the mound and at the plate for the Mustangs, who finished third in a difficult Division II-AA bracket.
Coach of the Year: Rob Baughman, Centennial
Resume: 25-14 record, Class 4A state tournament appearance
Talk about going out on a high note. Three days after leading the Cougars to their first-ever victory at the state tournament on May 23, Baughman resigned from the position he held for 20 seasons. He had Centennial playing its best in the postseason, winning district and region titles following a slow start in March.
Team of the Year: Eagleville Eagles
Resume: 35-5 record, Class 1A state title winner
The Eagles were the only Midstate baseball team to win a state championship this year. They did it behind complete-game pitching performances from Brayden Baker, Daniel Floyd and Josh Jeffcoat. Coach Brandon Bassham’s squad lost just one of its final 22 games en route to a second-straight Class 1A crown.
