Just thought I'd let you all know about my new music blog Forest Dwelling Today

I've been looking for an outlet for my pent up musical opinion for some time now and seeing as I haven't gotten around to reviving the old radio show I figure I'll have a go at blogging it.
The plan at the moment is to focus on underground bands on the folk, country and indie scene in the uk but that's not a hard and fast rule, I'll probably post about all kinds of musical stuff as I come across it!

Anyway, I'm pretty new to the whole 'proper' blogging thing so pointers are always appreciated. also If you know of, or are in any bands that you think might be the kind of thing I'm interested then let me know. I'm keen to support upcoming bands where ever I can, being in one myself I know that any support is appreciated.

I have been thinking again about the idea of "intelligent dance music". I still have problems with it - I think that IDM should stand for "internal dance music" for the majority of things which come under the tag, because they are different in that they're more literally cerebral; serotonin-pricking dynamic events happening in little flickers in your brain rather than noises making you want to flail around in a dark sweaty room ~~and get off with everyone~~. However there are a whole load of things (perhaps more lately post-Warp Records?) in the latter category which are also I feel much more "intelligent" (for lack of a better word - thoughtful? Considered? Clever?) than the majority of your identikit four-to-the-floor let's-chuck-everything-at-it house records.

I have been listening to two records a lot recently which are quite good examples of this. Firstly, Simian Mobile Disco's Simple which came out on the SMD EP in 2007. It is titled as it is because it's essentially just a sequence of five notes, and the interest in the song is created by dynamic and harmonic embellishments which swell and fade as the track progresses. She said, sounding like some kind of joyless textbook. BUT! Though it has all the hallmarks of a Big Dumb Electro House Record, there is something about it which really hooks into your brain and makes it much more pleasing and exciting to listen to. I was wondering how to describe this and I came to realise that it's the restraint with which SMD create their music. Even in their big club "anthems" (ha!) like Hustler or It's The Beat, there is a huge amount of space and tension. They could just bang everything together at once and make a huge bleepy racket but they always wait until exactly the right "dancefloor moment" - or even a bit past that, the teases! - before punching everyone in the face with synths. They could have a huge number of things going on in every bar for a big rushy druggy noisefest but they understand that dynamic variation and deceptive, muscular simplicity a la Proper EBM is much more exciting and stimulating. They understand that, as all music is essentially about time, dance music especially is all about suspense.

Which brings me to the next record which is Roar by Patrice Baumel. I heard this played at Bugged Out by JoJo De Freq (NAME STEALING BITCH - not really, she's awesome), and dr_f_dellamorte told me excitedly what it was (being as we are fans of "roaring at techno", the name obviously resonated), and it was a very strange record to listen to in a club. It's unusual in that it has no kick drum, and in a similar way to how Simple ebbs and flows, it consists mainly of a metronomic ticking with a big kind of revving noise that sounds like an extremely angry engine getting started and then grinding to a halt again, along with hisses that sound like letting off steam. It was quite stunning actually in the club as it was being played when everyone was hyped up to a massive degree, and I think she followed it with the Boys Noize version of Justice's Phantom Part II which is an awesome, celebratory explosion of epic mid-range loudness. Roar is a perfect, simple distillation of what dance music, actual dance music you hear in a club rather than head-dance music, is all about. It's kind of like a Mondrian painting in musical terms. The simplest and most effective elements required, pared down to an elegantly minimal form. No embellishments but all the more striking for that.

also went to an brilliant gig last week, el heath, what the moon is like & strap the button. strap are my favourite band out of everyone who ever played at the nights i used to put on in shrewsbury but i hadn't seen them live for nearly 2 years, i'd forgotten how much i like them. there's about ten of them onstage all going crazy, their sets are like one giant song played at a volume at least 3 notches higher than is good for anybody's ears, makes it such a visceral experience.

anyway, this reminded that a couple of the strap boys run "a tiny little Net and CD-R Label" called my formica table where they just give you free music from all their artists. the last.fm playlist that starts when you open the site is pretty intense, but i downloaded the gianluca licciardi album & it's really rather pretty. also recommend strap the button [obv] & hubbard, who makes glitchy electronic weirdness.

at the gig el heath played with dave bell, a rather sweet boy who also happens to run another free music online label thingy, records on ribs. so far i've only listened to talk less, say more, chosen due to descriptive phrases such as
the neon lights of 80s electropop with wide-eyed Italo synths
relentless thud of the Berlin techno minimalism
the anarchist pop spirit of Giorgio Moroder
Minimal techno, pound shop electro
it's paying off so far. go get you some!

i'm in the audiography community which can be a little overwhelming at times [so many posts to wade through!], and often full of lots of stuff i'm not particularly interested in, but i have found some gems on there. but i digress! they have a theme each week to guide what people post, and this week's theme is Top 5 ATM. i thought i'd share mine with you kids too, as they're up online just waiting to be loved by you.

this song just swoops & soars & swooshes & takes you along for the ride! best listened to quite loud whilst lying back on your bed in the dark so you can travel up up up & away. plus i love the weird vocals that almost aren't, and what they're saying too, though i'm sure some of that is my own interpretation!
ps. that description can actually be applied to the entire album, a strangely isolated place, it's AMAZING, but this song is the winner for me.

I've recently heard a tack being played on 6Music by a band called Heavy. The song is poss called Not That Kind (of Guy)? Anyone got any further info? They're impossible to google.

Also at the 1234 Shoreditch Festival last weekend I saw a band called Christine, who I loved. Not a girl called Christine, def a band, but again impossible to google so if anyone has further info I'd be very grateful...

Hey there everyone, Can I ask you for a some feedback please?

Basically my old band Far From Home (not as defunct as you may think) is undergoing some reworking. starting with renaming it. I really like Toluca lake, what do you think? I won't give the reasons yet but I was so inspired by the name that I decided to make a mock album cover!

I'm currently exploring an area of it that I had hitherto been only slightly aware of as a sub genre, Exotica. I'm listening to lots of Les Baxter and Eden Ahbez and have some Martin Denny downloading.

I don't think I've posted about my radio show here yet, So I'm going to now! :)

Basically, for those of you that don't know, I do an internet radio show every Sunday at 4pm called plan 9. I co host it with me good matey William.Gibson esq. It's 2 hours of random music, sometimes good, and the kind of banter that would never make professional radio!
If you want to listen go to http://www.coffee-records.co.uk and click on the coffeebar two link. (no..Not now..wait until 4pm!)

This should open the stream in your media player. Mac users or any itunes users for that matter will probably have to enter the url manually..

Simply got to 'advanced' in the menu bar select open stream and enter http://apollo.cookieonline.net:9000 into the box. voila!

There is a chat room on the coffeebar site too so you can come and chat to us while we're on air and make requests if you like.

I would like to thank you all as a lot of the tracks I have lined up for the show today have come from various conversations here on broadbean during the week! :)

Hello! This is me talking about music that I don't really know about or understand really, but the other day I was talking to braisedbywolves about X-Ray Spex and how great they were, and about that female punk vocal, the confience of lady punk singers, the rawness and the particular sound.

I found out about Germ Free Adolescents by X-Ray Spex when my man got really excited to find it on vinyl in a second hand record shop and then toook it home and played it to me. I'd not listened to much punk type music before, besides The Slits who they sort of reminded me of but not, and I thought the album was great. My favourite song off of it is the title song, which you can download here. It's so sad and true and naked - like the singer (Polly Styrene) is out on a diving board up above everyone else. The way her voice breaks a bit is really sort of amazing.

Apart from that album the only other bare-voice girl punk type of album I've got is Sun Sea and Piracy by Bow Wow Wow, which is well good too. I've been watching youtubed documentaries about punk women this evening (this one called 'Typical Girls' is quite good - they're all so cool, aren't they?) and I've sort of learning about the time a bit. I've never been so botherd by male-voiced shouty punk, and I'm thinking maybe I like the womany stuff cos I *am* a woman, and also, I dunno, cos it's more...singy? A bit weirder and less angular? I don't even really know.

I'd be interested in hearing recommendations of other bands, not just from then but from since, who make similar sorts of sounds or have that same kind of spirit. I never knew about or heard much of Riot Grrl type music or even proper indie so I think I might have missed things.

What do you think about punk and suchlike?
