1930s

The Great Depression forced even more consolidation within the US automotive industry, but design and technology continued to develop rapidly. Features like safety glass, independent front suspension, and synchronized gears were common by the end of the decade. Though the specter of Nazi Germany hung heavily over Europe, the racing scene thrived in Grand Prix events and rallies like the Targa Florio and Mille Miglia. By the outset of the Second World War, technology had progressed to the extent that streamlined race cars from Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union made over 600 horsepower and achieved top speeds well in excess of 250 mph.
