The EU’s cherished goal of a single labour market, one of its core four freedoms, is falling apart. Both the Netherlands and Hungary have applied to Brussels to suspend their membership of the Schengen Agreement which allows frictionless movement within the EU. Denmark already has an opt-out. Germany has gone further and ‘temporarily, reinstated movement controls at its borders. Brussels will push back against these changes but if the changes are made other countries will surely join in.
