Review: 40507 I Love Billund

Posted by ,

Since the LEGO House opened in 2017 there has been a variety of items that can only be obtained at the Home of the Brick in Billund, including a numbered series of limited edition sets.

This year's release, 40507 I Love Billund, is the seventh in that series and, like the others, was designed by the House's former chief model maker Stuart Harris before being refined for production by a LEGO designer.

I think it's fair to say that it has been inspired by the Architecture Skyline series, combining mini models of significant buildings in Billund together on a display plinth.

Summary

40507 I Love Billund, 1,404 pieces.

An excellent souvenir of a visit to Billund

  • Captures the essence of the significant LEGO-related buildings in Biillund
  • Right-hand section is a bit cramped

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

If you've even been to Billund you'll know that all the significant buildings in the sleepy town are LEGO-related, and so it is here. It's divided into three sections, each occupying a size of 16x16 studs. On the left is LEGOLAND Billund, in the centre the LEGO House, and on the right, a somewhat jumbled selection of LEGO offices and factory buildings.

Instructions are provided in four manuals allowing concurrent construction with friends or family should you wish. Whoever tackles book one gets the short straw building the frame in which the three microscale models will sit. Unlike previous sets in the series which have black frames, this one is white, as you can see.

The LEGO House and Billund sign are printed, as is the sign above the LEGOLAND entrance: there are no stickers in the set.

The LEGOLAND section squeezes in the entrance archway, the Castle, a small section of Miniland (Nyhavn), the train, and its most distinctive feature, the observation tower.

I particularly like the dragon roller-coaster clipped to a curved bar at the back.

The middle section is a colourful reproduction of the LEGO House situated in the centre of Billund. It's smaller than that in 21037 LEGO House but still reasonably accurate. The Danish flag flaying above it is somewhat oversized, though!

The top section can be removed to reveal the Tree of Creativity with a crane above it, and the moulding machine next to it.

The right-hand section comprises a selection of LEGO corporate buildings squeezed somewhat haphazardly onto its 16x16 footprint.

The building at the back occupying roughly half of the area is the new LEGO Campus. A sliver of factory with a yellow delivery truck outside sits on the far-right edge, and Ole Kirk's house and the adjoining Idea house fills the front left corner.

The red and white aircraft represents one of those owned by LEGO in the 1960s that helped establish Billund airport.

There are plenty of tiny details and Easter-eggs to discover inside and out, including a microscale rendition of Stuart Harris with his trademark yellow trainers, the lions outside Ole Kirk's House, and a sausage representing the bent lampposts that can be found near the campus.

The factory building has a clear panel through which a tiny moulding machine can be seen. It's shoehorned in between two panels and I found it difficult to get it straight, hence it looking wonky in the picture below.

All the LEGO House exclusive sets are excellent in their own way, but I think this one stands out as a particularly good souvenir from a trip to Billind given that it features LEGO-related buildings that will have been seen by those who visit the town.

The 1,404 piece set costs 749DKK (~£87/ $115) and is available now from the shop on the ground floor that can be accessed without a ticket to the House.

Unfortunately, cheap flights to Billund from the UK are a thing of the past now Ryanair no longer operates the route. A one-day round-trip from Heathrow by British Airways is about £200. Norwegian fly from Gatwick for about £100 return, but not every day. But it's worth the effort, and not only to get this set!

By in Norway,

Yeah, I'm definitely going to get this one. Looks like a lovely microscale set for Billund fans. :)

By in Netherlands,

I was racking my brain how they did that flag....and only then noticed that rounded edge of the lower red part...

Apart from that, it's a nice set, but not one that would make me go visit the Lego House just to get this. The pirate on the other hand....

And I can't help but feel this might as well have been three separate sets. I could imagine just the Legoland part sell like hotcakes in Legoland....

By in United Kingdom,

It's a shame the hotel isn't represented. That in itself was a highlight of our trip.

A great souvenir of a visit but not something I'd want otherwise. The only 2 I'd really like are the duck and the pirate.

By in United Kingdom,

How long is this one likely to be around for? I know it's this years set, but not sure if that sells out in August or if they could still be around in Jan 2027.

I remember the Lego House Dinosaurs showed up on Lego.com and I could buy them in the UK, but that seems to be the exception with these sets?

It'll be around for a couple of years.

By in Australia,

Seems like a set that they could almost permanently sell exclusively at the location.

I'd be super disappointed if I flew from the other side of the world to just find out they had sold out of stock for the the week.

By in Spain,

You must say something about the baby, it is in two-colours, which is a novelty for baby minifigures!!

By in Belgium,

You can just travel by car.

Like I did in 2021. Enjoyed every minute of it!

I hadn't even really questioned it until I saw your post, and then it still took me some thinking to figure out how it was done.
