My\u00a0Conversation\u00a0With\u00a0a Rabbi\u00a0That\u00a0Didn\u2019t\u00a0Go\u00a0As\u00a0Expected\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I sat across from a rabbi recently, ready to explain myself.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Listen,”<\/i>\u00a0I started,\u00a0“I believe in God. I pray. I feel\u00a0there’s\u00a0a higher power. But religion?\u00a0No\u00a0thank you. Too much baggage, too many rules, and too many people telling me what to think.”<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0argue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He nodded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Then he said something that surprised me:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, believing in God but not in religion\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0mean\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0off the path. It might mean\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0finally on it.\u201d<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

That\u2019s\u00a0when he introduced me to something ancient… and oddly freeing.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
