The articles focus on his main message: &#8220;Loving others as yourself&#8221; and emuna.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000080;\"><b>The Fruit of <i>Emuna<\/i><\/b> \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Last week we brought the astonishing statement of Vilna Gaon that the main point of giving the Torah to Yisrael is &#8220;so that they will place their trust in Hashem, because the main thing is the complete <i>bitachon<\/i> (trust) and that includes all the mitzvahs&#8221;. This is an amazing statement that places trust in Hashem at the top of the Jewish value system. According to the Vilna Gaon, trusting Hashem is the summary of all of Torah and mitzvahs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">The Gemara says that the prophet Habakkuk based all of Torah and mitzvahs on the mitzvah of <i>emuna<\/i>. &#8220;The righteous man lives on by his faith.&#8221;<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><sup><b>1<\/b><\/sup><\/span> And now the Vilna Gaon comes and fills in the Gemara, in practical terms: What does it mean that everything stands on <i>emuna<\/i>? It means to trust in Hashem <b>practically<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Because trusting Hashem can come only on top of a stable and strong <i>emuna<\/i>. <i>Emuna<\/i> is a wonderful tree and <i>bitachon<\/i> is the fruit of the <i>emuna <\/i>tree. If you don&#8217;t have <i>bitachon<\/i> \u2013 there is a weak point in your <i>emuna<\/i>!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">You can believe in Hashem, but when the critical test comes, your <i>emuna<\/i> will not be strong enough; it won\u2019t strengthen your soul, in other words, it won\u2019t give you <i>bitachon<\/i>! And so, when a person whose <i>emuna<\/i> is not strong is tested, his <i>emuna<\/i> fails. And that is expressed by his failing in <i>simcha<\/i>, in <i>tefilla<\/i>, descent into depression and anxiety, loss of hope.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">But when you say that someone trusts in Hashem, it means that he possesses a complete and perfect <i>emuna<\/i>, as we brought in our wonderful booklet, &#8220;<i>Hinneni Beyadcha<\/i>&#8221; [<em>Editor\u2019s note<\/em>: This booklet is not yet in English], that there is a reality of <i>emuna<\/i> without <i>bitachon<\/i>, but there is no reality of <i>bitachon<\/i> without <i>emuna<\/i>, because <i>bitachon<\/i> is the fruit of <i>emuna<\/i> and its perfection, both theoretically and practically.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000080;\"><b>Another Step Up<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">The great novelty of <i>&#8220;Hinneni Beyadcha<\/i>&#8221; is that the <i>bitachon<\/i> is on a higher level even than <i>emuna<\/i> because a person can believe in Hashem and still think that he will have a bad life because he deserves to be punished, or for whatever other reason. But a person who trusts in Hashem is certain that nothing bad will happen to him for any reason at all, even if he deserves to experience things that are not good.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Yes, yes, you are hearing right: He who trusts Hashem, even if he isn&#8217;t a worthy person, and even if he deserves punishment \u2013 will have only good! Only good \u2013 literally! Revealed good that we can see and understand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">These amazing things were brought in our booklet in the name of Lubavitcher Rebbe, who\u00a0 writes them clearly, explicitly, and precisely with sources from the books of the <i>Rishonim<\/i> and the <i>Acharonim<\/i> (earlier and later scholars), and we have already received many responses to this from many readers who received great <i>chizuk<\/i> (strengthening) of their <i>emuna\u00a0<\/i> and <i>bitachon<\/i>, and were filled with hope and <i>simcha<\/i> (joy) and light for their soul from the simple statements and from the clear-cut definitions of the <i>middah<\/i> of <i>bitachon<\/i> and its advantages brought in the booklet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">The amazing thing is that this entire wonderful <i>daat<\/i> can be summarized in a single sentence:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><b>Hashem <i>yitbarach<\/i> always loves me and I will always have only good.<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><b>The heart of <i>emuna<\/i> is: Hashem <i>yitbarach<\/i> always loves me.<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><b>The heart of <i>bitachon<\/i> is: I will always have only good.<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000080;\"><b>G-d&#8217;s Closeness Is Good for Me<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Our <i>bitachon<\/i> that we will have only good relates not only to material matters \u2013 good health, wealth, and <i>zivugim<\/i> (matches), but also and even more in our spiritual life: to trust in Hashem that he will grant us <i>emuna<\/i>, Torah and <i>tefilla<\/i>, <i>yirat Shamayim <\/i>(fear and awe of Hashem), <i>ahavat Yisrael<\/i> (love of our fellow Jews), and experience true spiritual light \u2013 we, our children, and our children\u2019s children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">After all, this is our purpose in life; this is the true good, the absolute and eternal good.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">We learned that with <i>bitachon<\/i> we can merit every <i>yeshuah<\/i> (salvation) and abundance in material matters, because Hashem loves us and wishes to give and to pour endless abundance and good on us. And if that is true for physical needs, how much more so is it true in our spiritual issues \u2013 Hashem, who loves us, wishes to give us all the spiritual goodness for which He created us! And therefore, trusting Hashem in spiritual matters is the most powerful tool, allowing us to grow spiritually and merit every spiritual advantage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">If you want power and strength to do everything in the service of Hashem and to go from strength to strength, strengthen yourself in your <i>bitachon<\/i> in Hashem. Know and believe with complete knowledge that of course Hashem loves you! Trust in Hashem that He certainly loves you, wishes to bring you closer to Him, to give you the merit of doing His will wholeheartedly, and learning Torah and knowing it. He wants to give you the merit of becoming a prayer and a true servant of Hashem, repenting completely. He wants to give you the merit of good <i>middot <\/i>(character traits) and to release you from all base desires.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000080;\"><b>You Have Loved Us with Endless Love<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">And since <i>bitachon<\/i> is the purpose of the Torah, there is no better time than the days right before the holiday of <i>Matan Torah<\/i> (Shavuot) to increase one\u2019s <i>emuna<\/i> and complete <i>bitachon.\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">And not only is the<i> bitachon<\/i> in Hashem the purpose of the Torah, but it is also the condition for receiving the Torah. Every <i>Kabbalat Torah<\/i> depends on the <i>midah<\/i> of <i>bitachon<\/i>! And <i>bitachon<\/i> depends on the <i>emuna<\/i> that Hashem loves me!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">You are probably asking: What is the source for the statement that <i>Kabbalat HaTorah<\/i> depends on <i>bitachon<\/i> and on the faith that Hashem loves me?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">We say it every day in our prayers!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">The central blessing in the prayer that deals with Torah study is the blessing of \u201cYou have loved us with endless love\u201d \u2013 You love us so much, Hashem. And in this blessing, we say, \u201cFor the sake of our forefathers who trusted in You, and you taught them the laws of life \u2013 so too, may You be gracious to us and teach us.\u201d<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><sup>2<\/sup><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">It seems from the wording of the blessing, that our forefathers received the Torah in the merit of their trusting in Hashem. One might ask, what is the connection between their trusting in Hashem and receiving the Torah?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">In the Gemara it is told that a <i>Tzedoki<\/i> (who believed only in the Written Torah) said to Rava: \u201cYou are a rash people, for you accepted the Torah by saying \u2018We will do, and we will hear\u2019\u201d. In other words, you first took upon yourself the obligation to perform the mitzvahs and only afterwards did you plan to learn and understand what these obligations entail \u2013 this is not logical! How can you sign a contract whose content you don\u2019t know? How can you commit yourselves to do what you haven\u2019t heard of yet? Maybe it\u2019s beyond your abilities?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Rava answered him: \u201cThat is precisely the reason that we received the Torah, for we followed Hashem wholeheartedly. And Rashi explains: As those who do things out of <b>love<\/b>, because we trusted in Hashem that he will not give us a task that we cannot perform!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">From where do we get this <i>bitachon<\/i>? We trust in Hashem that He loves us, and a lover will not demand anything that is beyond his capabilities from the beloved.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000080;\"><b>Bitachon From Start to Finish<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">So, we see that <i>Kabbalat HaTorah<\/i>, and the statement, \u201cWe will do, and we will listen\u201d, is based on the <i>midah<\/i> of <i>bitachon.\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Therefore, we can understand the connection between the various parts of the blessing of <i>Ahavat Olam<\/i>: Hashem\u2019s love of the Jewish people, trusting in Hashem, and the receiving of the Torah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">When Yisrael said, \u201cWe will do and we will listen,\u201d the Holy One, Blessed Be He, said: \u201cWho revealed this secret to My sons? There is a very great secret here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">What is this secret?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Based on what we have written here, the great secret of <i>Na\u2019aseh venishma<\/i> is the knowledge of how much Hashem loves us, and the complete <i>bitachon<\/i> that the Torah is \u201conly good\u201d for us.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">\u201cHashem <i>yitbarach<\/i> always loves me and I will always have only good\u201d \u2013 this is a secret that no matter how much one shouts it, it is still a secret, and every Jew, the more he will be able to discover the secret for himself, so he will be able to achieve his purpose in life, as well as receive all the abundance in the world, physically and spiritually.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">This is yet another addendum to the previous essay. Last week we wrote that <i>bitachon<\/i> is also the first thing, the basis, as well as being the last thing \u2013 the purpose and final aspiration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">And we see this in <i>Kabbalat HaTorah<\/i>, for the receiving of the Torah would be impossible without the <i>midah<\/i> of <i>Bitachon<\/i> \u2013 meaning that <i>bitachon<\/i> precedes Torah; and, on the other hand, according to the Vilna Gaon, the <i>midah<\/i> of <i>bitachon<\/i> is also the purpose; it is the final aspiration and purpose that the Torah and all of the <i>mitzvot<\/i> are supposed to lead us to.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">In the booklet \u201c<i>Hineni Beyadcha<\/i>\u201d we summed it up thus:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><b>Trusting in Hashem is also the tool allowing us to be successful in our Torah learning and in our service of Hashem &#8211;\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<b>as well as being the purpose of the Torah and the service of Hashem!<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">But the most novel idea in this booklet is that it doesn\u2019t only remain on the level of speech, but, rather the booklet also teaches us a clear and paved way to acquire the <i>midah<\/i> of <i>bitachon<\/i> practically \u2013 through prayer, <i>hitbodedut,<\/i> and working on one\u2019s <i>ratzon <\/i>(will)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Dear Jews, study this important booklet; it will breathe new spirit into you, a spirit of <i>bitachon<\/i> and hope, which is the internal spirit of all of Torah and mitzvot, and in the merit of that we will all merit a fresh and renewed receiving of the Torah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Shabbat Shalom and <i>Chag Shavuot Sameach!<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Editor&#8217;s Notes:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><sup>1<\/sup><\/strong><\/span> Habakkuk 2:4\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><sup>2 <\/sup><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">Last prayer before Kriyat Shema<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Translated from Rabbi Arush\u2019s feature article in the weekly Chut shel Chessed newsletter.
