Everyone waited patiently as the night grew later and later. Finally, he entered the <i>Beis Midrash,<\/i> and he began to enthusiastically <i>daven<\/i> with tremendous energy. After <i>Yom Kippur<\/i>, knowing that there had to be more to the story, his students sought an explanation. The <i>Baal Shem Tov<\/i> answered as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;In a city far away, there is a <i>yid<\/i> who has committed every transgression possible. He has not <i>davened<\/i> for over thirty years. However, yesterday, on <i>Erev Yom Kippur, <\/i>when he saw the <i>yidden<\/i> running to <i>shul<\/i> with their <i>taleitim<\/i> in hand to attend <i>Kol Nidre, <\/i>he was inspired. He began to examine his life. However, he felt that since he was so immersed in the impurities caused by his countless sins, he could not do <i>teshuva<\/i> properly. In the morning, when he saw the <i>yidden<\/i> going to <i>Shacharit<\/i>, he once again felt the longing to do <i>teshuva<\/i>. However, as with the night before, he was prevented by his <i>Yetzer Harah<\/i>. And the same thing occurred when it was time for <i>Mussaf.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Towards the evening, when he saw people going to <i>Neilah<\/i>, he felt such a powerful yearning for <i>Hashem<\/i> that he quickly grabbed his <i>talit<\/i> \u2013 which he hadn&#8217;t used in years \u2013 and ran to <i>shul.<\/i> When he arrived, he was overwhelmed with emotion and he could not hold back the tears as he said, &#8216;Master of the World! I know that I have sinned more than anyone else in the world! My sins are greater than the worst wicked person imaginable!&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He sat there crying for a long time and could not daven with the rest of the congregation. When he finally composed himself and began to <i>daven<\/i>, everyone else had already returned home.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then the <i>Baal Shem Tov<\/i> added, &#8220;You all need to know that there is a tremendous commotion in the heavens at the moment a wicked person such as this returns to <i>Hashem<\/i> with all of his heart. This was such an exalted moment for mercy that many prayers that were stuck for several hundred years were now raised to the heavens by his merit. I was waiting to <i>daven<\/i> together with this person. Therefore, I delayed my prayers.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">This story demonstrates without exception that every Jew&#8217;s prayers are precious. There are many times when Jews try to pray and their <i>Yetzer Harah<\/i> challenges them and, in his cunning ways, attempts to discourage them from <i>davening. <\/i>He fuels their guilt and their unhealthy feelings of low self-worth, by convincing them that their sins have created a distance between them and <i>Hashem<\/i>, that those sins have severed their connection with <i>Hashem<\/i>. Now, <i>Hashem<\/i> will not listen to their prayers. However, the inescapable truth is that even if a Jew has transgressed countless times, his prayers are precious. Even if a Jew has sinned, he is a Jew, nonetheless. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><b>Every Jew Counts<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"> <br \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When the Torah describes the attack of <i>Amalek<\/i>, the <i>pasuk<\/i> says (Devarim 25:18), &#8220;<i>he happened upon you on the way and <\/i><b><i>cut off<\/i><\/b><i>&#8220;<\/i> (\u05d5\u05d9\u05d6\u05e0\u05d1 \u05d1\u05da )&#8230; <i>R&#8217; Yisroel from Koshnitz,<\/i> zt&#8221;l, explained that <i>Amalek<\/i> convinced the &#8220;weak&#8221; Jews that they are like a tail (\u05d6\u05e0\u05d1) that is useless and worthless. The <i>Yetzer Harah<\/i> uses all his cunning to try and convince the Jews that they are unimportant, unworthy, and that they do not matter.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Similarly, <i>R&#8217; Shlomo of Karlin<\/i>, zt&#8221;l, taught that the greatest <i>Yetzer Harah<\/i>, the greatest threat to a Jew&#8217;s spiritual well-being, is to forget that he is the son of the King of Kings. The Jews are each considered princes, children of our Father in Heaven who is the King of Kings. We must remember that <i>Hashem<\/i> always desires a relationship with us, a connection, like a king always wants a relationship with his son, even if he was rebellious. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><b>Always Princes<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"> <br \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The <i>pasuk<\/i> says (Devarim 14:1), <i>&#8220;You are the children of Hashem your God&#8221;. R&#8217; Meir<\/i> taught (Kiddushin 36) that even when the Jews are not acting like good children, they are nonetheless considered <i>Hashem&#8217;s<\/i> children. This is the law as determined by the <i>poskim (Shalos V&#8217;Teshuvos of the Rashba<\/i>, Volume 1, Chapter 194). The <i>Yesod HaAvodah from Slonim<\/i>, zt&#8221;l, said that it is a <i>mitzvah<\/i> to always mention and publicize that the law is like this opinion of <i>R&#8217; Meir<\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The <i>Bas Eyin<\/i> zt&#8221;l said: &#8220;If a Jew does not believe that <i>Hashem<\/i> is close to him and desires his service even after the most severe sins &#8211; as it says (Vayikra 16:16), <i>&#8216;dwells with them amidst their defilements&#8217;<\/i> &#8211; he is a heretic&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>R&#8217; Moshe from Kobrin<\/i>, zt&#8221;l, said: &#8220;Whoever is unable to stand in prayer before his Heavenly Father after committing the gravest transgression, and pour his heart out like a son before his father, has not yet stepped foot on Judaism&#8217;s doorstep.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My grandfather, <i>R&#8217; Tzvi Hirsh from Ziditchov<\/i>, zt&#8221;l, said in a jovial fashion, that we say in <i>Shmoneh Esrei, <\/i><i>\u05db\u05d9 \u05d0\u05ea\u05d4 \u05e9\u05d5\u05de\u05e2 \u05ea\u05e4\u05d9\u05dc\u05ea \u05db\u05dc \u05e4\u05d4<\/i><i>-for You hear the prayers of every mouth.<\/i> The word <i>mouth- <\/i>\u05e4\u05d4 sounds like \u05e4\u05e2-<i>feh<\/i>. People typically say <i>&#8220;feh&#8221;<\/i> when they hear something displeasing. This alludes to the idea that <i>Hashem<\/i> listens to the prayers of all the Jews, even those we would describe as <i>&#8220;feh&#8221;<\/i> because they have been covered in the filth of their sins. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><b>Hashem Listens to You<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"> <br \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The week before <i>Rosh Hashanah<\/i> we read <i>Parshat Nitzavim<\/i>. The <i>pasuk<\/i> says (Devarim 29:10), <i>You are all standing this day before the Lord, your God&#8230;<\/i> As the <i>Zohar<\/i> explains (Volume III, p. 231a) this is referring to when the Jews are standing in <i>shul<\/i> on <i>Rosh Hashanah<\/i>. You need to remember that on this day, You are &#8220;all&#8221; standing before <i>Hashem<\/i>. Every Jew, regardless of their circumstances and lifestyle. Everyone can become closer to <i>Hashem<\/i> and He is waiting to hear your prayers.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On <i>Rosh Hashanah<\/i> night we say, &#8220;<i>Let us become like the head and not the tail.&#8221; <\/i>We are asking that each of us should be able to feel our importance, to realize that <i>Hashem&#8217;s<\/i> values our <i>avodah <\/i>(spiritual work)<i>. <\/i>We are the head, and not the tail.
