
{"id":305571,"date":"2008-05-25T16:20:45","date_gmt":"2008-05-25T16:20:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/breslev.com\/%d7%9c%d7%9c%d7%90-%d7%a7%d7%98%d7%92%d7%95%d7%a8%d7%99%d7%94\/blessing-hashem-for-our-food\/"},"modified":"2023-06-27T12:19:10","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T12:19:10","slug":"blessing-hashem-for-our-food","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/breslev.com\/305571\/","title":{"rendered":"Blessing Hashem for our Food"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"justify\"><i>\u201cWhen you have eaten and become satisfied, then you must bless Hashem your G-d for the good land which He has given you.\u201d<\/i> (Devarim 8:10)<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><b><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Overview<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">The purpose of reciting <i>brachot<\/i> (blessings) is to affirm that there is one G-d in the world and that everything belongs to Him.\u00a0 We ask permission from G-d before eating.\u00a0 A person who derives pleasure from anything in this world without a blessing is compared to a person who steals from G-d.<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mybreslev.co.il\/FCKeditor\/editor\/fckeditor.html?InstanceName=FCKeditor1&amp;Toolbar=Default#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><b><b><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/span><\/b><\/b><\/a>\u00a0 Blessing with proper intention purifies and elevates the Divine sparks contained in food.\u00a0 Learning Torah, praying to G-d, or using the food\u2019s energy to perform a mitzvah elevates the sparks contained in the food to the upper worlds, from where they had originally fallen.\u00a0 The sparks of holiness are thereby returned to their source.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0If food was eaten by someone who didn\u2019t think about G-d at all and didn\u2019t use its nourishment for good deeds; its spark would be degraded.<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mybreslev.co.il\/FCKeditor\/editor\/fckeditor.html?InstanceName=FCKeditor1&amp;Toolbar=Default#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><b><b><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/span><\/b><\/b><\/a><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">Without these Divine sparks, nothing can exist.\u00a0 G-d\u2019s word is the essential vitalizing power concealed within the food that we eat.<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mybreslev.co.il\/FCKeditor\/editor\/fckeditor.html?InstanceName=FCKeditor1&amp;Toolbar=Default#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\"><b><b><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[3]<\/span><\/sup><\/b><\/b><\/a>\u00a0 When recognizing this truth by blessing Hashem for our food, we elevate our pleasure of eating, and transform our table to an altar and our food to a sacrifice. <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mybreslev.co.il\/FCKeditor\/editor\/fckeditor.html?InstanceName=FCKeditor1&amp;Toolbar=Default#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\"><b><b><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[4]<\/span><\/sup><\/b><\/b><\/a><b> <\/b><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi, one of the richest men to ever exist, never took any pleasure from this world.\u00a0 Although he had a table of kings, his awareness of G-d as the source of all his abundance turned his worldly pleasure into the Divine pleasure, transforming earthly food into manna from Heaven.\u00a0 Manna, like the fruits of Paradise, was supernal light in physical form that contained no waste and was, therefore, absorbed completely into the body.\u00a0 It included no mixture of Evil in its composition, since only Goodness descends from Heaven.<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mybreslev.co.il\/FCKeditor\/editor\/fckeditor.html?InstanceName=FCKeditor1&amp;Toolbar=Default#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\"><b><b><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[5]<\/span><\/sup><\/b><\/b><\/a>\u00a0 Blessings transform Earth to Heaven; resembling the World to Come where neither food nor drink exist and only righteous people enjoy the Divine splendor.\u00a0 In this world, the spiritual food is covered in a garment, yet the blessing reveals its inner essence.\u00a0 This is in contrast to the personification of physical desire&#8211; the snake, who is nourished by physicality and <i>\u201ceverything he eats will taste like the dust of the ground\u201d<\/i>.<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mybreslev.co.il\/FCKeditor\/editor\/fckeditor.html?InstanceName=FCKeditor1&amp;Toolbar=Default#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\"><b><b><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[6]<\/span><\/sup><\/b><\/b><\/a>\u00a0 By blessing Hashem for our food we free ourselves from the curse of the snake, and enjoy the Divine life force within the food.\u00a0 This helps us understand why \u201c<i>The Torah was only given to the generation who ate manna\u201d.<\/i><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mybreslev.co.il\/FCKeditor\/editor\/fckeditor.html?InstanceName=FCKeditor1&amp;Toolbar=Default#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\"><b><b><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[7]<\/span><\/sup><\/b><\/b><\/a>\u00a0 In every generation, the Torah is given to those who purify the food from the snake bite, and transform it to manna. Because Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi elevated his food into manna, he was given the ability to compile the Mishna.<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mybreslev.co.il\/FCKeditor\/editor\/fckeditor.html?InstanceName=FCKeditor1&amp;Toolbar=Default#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\"><b><b><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[8]<\/span><\/sup><\/b><\/b><\/a><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><b><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Blessings Increase Appreciation and Enjoyment<\/span> <\/b><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><i>\u00a0\u201cHe shall receive a blessing from Hashem, and righteousness from the G-d of his salvation.\u201d<\/i> (Tehillim 24:5)<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">Yehuda Halevi explains that brachot enable us to appreciate and enjoy the food, as they expand our consciousness.\u00a0 When we recite <i>brachot<\/i> with proper devotion and understanding, they help us to anticipate the coming enjoyments and to feel gratitude toward G-d for granting us these pleasures.<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">A person\u2019s preparation for and anticipation of a pleasurable experience, along with thoughts of how he would feel if it were denied him, doubles the satisfaction and enjoyment he ultimately feels when he partakes of it.\u00a0 If one experiences anxiety about possibly losing the pleasure, it will be all the greater when he blesses, \u201cWho has granted us life, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this occasion\u201d\u2026 <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mybreslev.co.il\/FCKeditor\/editor\/fckeditor.html?InstanceName=FCKeditor1&amp;Toolbar=Default#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\"><b><b><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[9]<\/span><\/sup><\/b><\/b><\/a><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">When thanking a person we express our gratitude on a higher level when acknowledging each of the favors we received rather than just saying \u201cthanks for everything.\u201d\u00a0 Therefore, we are specific in our blessings, for each type of food, whether it came from the earth, from a tree, from grains, etc.\u00a0 We should strive to become experts in the laws of <i>brachot<\/i>, for the rectification of elevating holy sparks is through the specific <i>bracha<\/i> for each food.\u00a0 The \u201cbefore-<i>bracha\u201d<\/i> elevates the sparks, while the \u201cafter-<i>bracha\u201d<\/i> raises the souls reincarnated in the food.\u00a0 \u201c<i>Boreh Nefashot rabot..lehachayot bahem nefesh kol chai.<\/i>\u201d(Who has created many souls\u2026to give life to each soul.)<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mybreslev.co.il\/FCKeditor\/editor\/fckeditor.html?InstanceName=FCKeditor1&amp;Toolbar=Default#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\"><b><b><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[10]<\/span><\/sup><\/b><\/b><\/a><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">Prayer often involves yearning for a changed reality, yet <i>brachot<\/i> focus us on the present. When we bless Hashem, we recognize perfection of the moment, and how we are saturated with blessings.\u00a0 We praise Hashem for the countless gifts that He bestows upon us every split second.<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mybreslev.co.il\/FCKeditor\/editor\/fckeditor.html?InstanceName=FCKeditor1&amp;Toolbar=Default#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\"><b><b><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[11]<\/span><\/sup><\/b><\/b><\/a>\u00a0 The words of our brachot have the power to expand Hashem\u2019s blessings and increase our \u05e9\u05e4\u05e2 \u2013the abundance emanating from the upper words.\u00a0 In this way <i>brachot<\/i> are expressions of gratitude that enable us to be givers even when it seems that we are essentially \u2018takers\u2019.<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mybreslev.co.il\/FCKeditor\/editor\/fckeditor.html?InstanceName=FCKeditor1&amp;Toolbar=Default#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\"><b><b><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[12]<\/span><\/sup><\/b><\/b><\/a><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><b><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Proper intention when reciting blessings<\/span> <\/b><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\u201c&#8230;<i>Rise up and bless Hashem your G-d from everlasting to everlasting, and let them bless your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.<\/i>\u201d\u00a0 (Nehemiah 9:5)<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><i>Brachot<\/i> with the names of G-d awaken the soul. Their effect can be increased by concentrating on the meaning of each word.\u00a0 Recited with deep intention, the blessing draws light from above, sparks from below, and heals the soul of both the one who is blessing and the one responding with \u201cAmen\u201d.<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mybreslev.co.il\/FCKeditor\/editor\/fckeditor.html?InstanceName=FCKeditor1&amp;Toolbar=Default#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\"><b><b><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[13]<\/span><\/sup><\/b><\/b><\/a>\u00a0 The greater one\u2019s awareness of the oneness of G-d, and the inner significance of the blessing, the higher the sparks will be elevated.<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mybreslev.co.il\/FCKeditor\/editor\/fckeditor.html?InstanceName=FCKeditor1&amp;Toolbar=Default#_ftn14\" name=\"_ftnref14\"><b><b><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[14]<\/span><\/sup><\/b><\/b><\/a>\u00a0 When blessing with proper \u05db\u05d5\u05d5\u05e0\u05d4<i>&#8211;
