The first <\/span><\/span>commandment <\/span><\/span>in this week\u2019<\/span><\/span>s <\/span><\/span>Torah portion <\/span><\/span>is that <\/span><\/span>of a Jew<\/span><\/span>ish slave<\/span><\/span>: <\/span><\/span>\u201cIf you buy a Jewish bondsman, he shall work for six years; and in the seventh he shall go free, for no charge.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>If he shall arrive by himself, he shall leave by himself; if he is the husband of a woman, his wife shall leave with him\u201d (Shemot 21: 2-3)<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

R<\/span><\/span>abbi Natan of <\/span><\/span>Breslev<\/span><\/span> discusses why, in a deeper sense, a Jewish slave must be se<\/span><\/span>t free after six years.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>He explains that<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>slavery <\/span><\/span>has no connection<\/span><\/span> to the Jewish people whatsoever.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Therefore<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>even <\/span><\/span>this Jewish man who fell into such a low state <\/span><\/span>that <\/span><\/span>he was sold by the <\/span><\/span>Beis<\/span><\/span> Din <\/span><\/span>(Jewish court) to be a servant in order to pay back the victim<\/span><\/span>s he stole from, <\/span><\/span>needs to be set free in the seventh year.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The seventh year<\/span><\/span> is<\/span><\/span> the aspect of Shabb<\/span><\/span>at<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Shabb<\/span><\/span>at<\/span><\/span> is a taste of Heaven <\/span><\/span>in this world<\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span>i<\/span><\/span>s <\/span><\/span>above time.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>On Shabb<\/span><\/span>at<\/span><\/span> the light of faith shines in a much more powerful way.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>This Jewish servant, due to a lack of knowledge and faith<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> fell so much into the limitations of <\/span><\/span>this world<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>– <\/span><\/span>to the point that he was sold to work in servitude<\/span><\/span>, because of his theft<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Therefore,<\/span><\/span> this Jewish slave should not work more than six years<\/span><\/span>, because \u201cin the seventh he shall go free, for no charge<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u201d <\/span><\/span>O<\/span><\/span>n Shabbat every person on their level, even someone who had been a Jewish slave, can connect to this aspect of<\/span><\/span> the<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>nullification of <\/span><\/span>time.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>He can go<\/span><\/span> above the <\/span><\/span>confines<\/span><\/span> of this world,<\/span><\/span> and<\/span><\/span> he can connect to f<\/span><\/span>aith and holiness which are above the limitations of<\/span><\/span> time<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>(<\/span><\/span>Likutei<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Halachot<\/span><\/span>, Laws of Brit <\/span><\/span>Milah<\/span><\/span>, 4<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span> teaching)<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Hashem is above time and space, and we can connect to this<\/span><\/span> reality even<\/span><\/span> more o<\/span><\/span>n Shabbat than during the week.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>We can rise above our daily constrictions and stresses and connect to a different reality.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Personally, I struggl<\/span><\/span>e a lot<\/span><\/span> in <\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span>his area<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Many ti<\/span><\/span>mes<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> I find myself constricted about times<\/span><\/span> and my <\/span><\/span>daily <\/span><\/span>schedule.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>For example, w<\/span><\/span>hat time do I <\/span><\/span>leave in the morning to take my daughter to school and<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>go to shul<\/span><\/span>?<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>If we are late<\/span><\/span> for whatever reason<\/span><\/span> I feel tense and nervous.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>I feel a loss of control.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>If<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>I need to be at a meeting or appointment at a certain time, I usually have anxiety about getting ready and leaving on time.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>I feel the constriction of time<\/span><\/span> very strongly<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

However<\/span><\/span>, we learn from this teaching that <\/span><\/span>when we let go<\/span><\/span> of control<\/span><\/span> and have faith that we will get to our destination<\/span><\/span> exactly<\/span><\/span> when we are supposed to<\/span><\/span> get there<\/span><\/span>, this relieve<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span> a lot of the stress and anxiety<\/span><\/span> involved<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>The more knowledge and faith  <\/span><\/span>(<\/span><\/span>daat<\/span><\/span>  <\/span><\/span>and  <\/span><\/span>emuna<\/span><\/span>) <\/span><\/span>that we obtain, the less we will feel the constrictions of time and space.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>We\u2019re really not in control, and when we let go and let Hashem into our lives, we will see how He is helping us exactly in <\/span><\/span>those times<\/span><\/span> and situations where we d<\/span><\/span>on\u2019t<\/span><\/span> see how it <\/span><\/span>will <\/span><\/span>work out, based on our<\/span><\/span> limited<\/span><\/span> perception.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Shabb<\/span><\/span>at<\/span><\/span> gives us the f<\/span><\/span>aith and the strength to rise above<\/span><\/span> these stressful situations.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>On Shabb<\/span><\/span>at<\/span><\/span> we testify that Hashem created the world in six <\/span><\/span>days, and<\/span><\/span> rested <\/span><\/span>on the seventh day.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>By keeping the Shabbat, we express our faith that He is the Creator and King of the World, and through this faith we can rise above the limitations of time and space which we feel are holding are us back.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Rebbe<\/span><\/span> Nachman says in the book <\/span><\/span>Advice<\/span><\/a> <\/span><\/span>that <\/span><\/span>through keeping Shabb<\/span><\/span>at<\/span><\/span> we merit to obtain <\/span><\/span>emuna<\/span><\/span> (faith).<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>All of<\/span><\/span> the blessings and abundance which we receive from giving tzedakah or other forms of kindness, only have completion through<\/span><\/span> Shabb<\/span><\/span>at<\/span><\/span>, which is the source of all blessing.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Any aspect of completion <\/span><\/span>which <\/span><\/span>we can obtain in this world is t<\/span><\/span>hrough the holiness of Shabb<\/span><\/span>at<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Rebbe<\/span><\/span> Nachman adds that true knowledge and <\/span><\/span>understanding<\/span><\/span> of the Torah <\/span><\/span>are also obtained<\/span><\/span> through the holiness of <\/span><\/span>Shabb<\/span><\/span>at<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>This gives us a little taste of how important and central Shabb<\/span><\/span>at<\/span><\/span> is to our lives as Jews<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>(Shabbat, 2<\/span><\/span>nd<\/span><\/span> teaching)<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Shabb<\/span><\/span>at<\/span><\/span> is a taste of the World to Come<\/span><\/span>;<\/span><\/span> a ta<\/span><\/span>ste of Heaven.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>We can taste <\/span><\/span>and experience<\/span><\/span> a little bit of<\/span><\/span> Heaven here in this world through the holiness of Shabb<\/span><\/span>at<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>We need these special times of the year, Shabb<\/span><\/span>at<\/span><\/span> every wee<\/span><\/span>k, and all the other holidays during<\/span><\/span> the year where we re-charge and connect ourselves on a much deeper level to our faith and true knowledge.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>These special times during the calenda<\/span><\/span>r give us the clarity, s<\/span><\/span>trength<\/span><\/span> and faith<\/span><\/span> to deal with daily life, <\/span><\/span>overcome<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>all<\/span><\/span> the challenges<\/span><\/span> we face<\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span>enable us to<\/span><\/span> find <\/span><\/span>meaning <\/span><\/span>in <\/span><\/span>everything we go through in our lives<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
