Our wonderful volunteer writer David ben\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Horin<\/span><\/span>\u00a0wrote this fantastic piece\u00a0<\/span><\/span>called\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Jungle Warfare<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>. I challenged David on a few of his points, which he encouraged me to publish as well. So, right on track with\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Shovevim<\/span><\/span><\/a>,<\/span><\/span>I am excited to present this op-ed response to his brilliant work, which really\u00a0<\/span><\/span>opened my eyes. I appreciate<\/span><\/span>d David\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/span>raw honesty with the situation and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>his experiences<\/span><\/span>, and especially, how it made\u00a0<\/span><\/span>David<\/span><\/span>\u00a0think and feel about\u00a0<\/span><\/span>his<\/span><\/span>\u00a0wife and family.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Everyone talks about the war of GOG and MAGOG at the end of days. What about GOGle and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>MAGOGle<\/span><\/span>? About the ravages of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Internet<\/span><\/span>\u00a0addiction and pornography? It is a real war out there! As David pushes you \u2013 get out there and fight!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t get out there and fight, you\u2019re lost. This is the battle for the most important thing there could possibly be \u2013 YOUR MIND.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

D<\/span><\/span>rug dealers give you the first couple of “hits” for free. They will give an unsuspecting person a “free” try, or a few. They do this knowing that once they try a few times, Hashem protect us, they will get hooked and start to buy.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The cigarette companies do exactly the same. They have contests where you get “points” for every pack you buy, and once you have enough “points” you get a prize. Here is what’s disgusting: The prizes are for\u00a0<\/span><\/span>game-boys<\/span><\/span>, skateboards, and things only teenagers would want. Their ploy is to get kids to smoke enough that they will become addicted.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

P<\/span><\/span>orn works the same way. Researchers took a<\/span><\/span>\u00a0brain scan of people watching\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Internet<\/span><\/span>\u00a0porn and discovered that it is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>exactly the same<\/span><\/span>\u00a0as some<\/span><\/span>one\u202fsmoking crack cocaine –<\/span><\/span>\u00a0among the most addictive drugs there is.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

T<\/span><\/span>his is exactly the reason why\u00a0<\/span><\/span>surfing unfiltered\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Internet<\/span><\/span>\u00a0is absolutely<\/span><\/span>\u00a0banned by the Rabbis! Not because\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the Rabbis are clueless and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>outdated<\/span><\/span>\u00a0–<\/span><\/span>\u00a0but because they know that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>it is impossible to beat this evil, and the stakes of losing for even ONE SPLIT SECOND cannot be tolerated!!!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Rabbi\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Arush<\/span><\/span>\u00a0says that with the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Internet<\/span><\/span>, it is possible to sin in one day, more than it was possible to sin in 1,000 years in previous generations. Sin was always available, but it was generally hidden, and expensive. You had to run after it, and even then, how much could you do in one night? It was bad, but there were limits. But with the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Internet<\/span><\/span>, there are no limits! You literally burn up the holy\u00a0<\/span><\/span>neshama<\/span><\/span>\u00a0– soul – with lust! And to climb out of that abyss is no simple work – assuming the person is left with any desire to even try after so completely and absolutely disconnecting themselves from holiness.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Rabbi\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Arush<\/span><\/span>\u00a0goes further \u2013 he says that some young man touches the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Internet<\/span><\/span>\u00a0– by that Shabbat,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>he is<\/span><\/span>\u00a0so addicted, that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>he will<\/span><\/span>\u00a0even break Shabbat for it!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Rabbi\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Arush<\/span><\/span>\u00a0goes\u00a0<\/span><\/span>even\u00a0<\/span><\/span>further and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0says th<\/span><\/span>at someone who uses unfiltered\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Internet<\/span><\/span> WILL NEVER EVER DO TESHUVAH.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The spiritual impurity is that strong; no one can get close to it and not get burned. Therefore, if you want someone to do teshuva, first pray that they get rid of the smartphone and the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Internet<\/span><\/span>. Only then can you pray for the rest.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

For this reason, use of unfiltered\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Internet<\/span><\/span>\u00a0is totally and absolutely banned. Even filtered\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Internet<\/span><\/span>\u00a0is allowed only for work use, and only in a fashion that children can never, ever use it. Rabbi\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Arush<\/span><\/span>\u00a0brings a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Gemara<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to explain; someone who puts themselves in a position where they could easily sin – even if they withstand the test, they are still called a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>rasha<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u2013 an evil person<\/span><\/span>!\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This is especially true with the temptation is being pushed on you, and the images are burned into the brain even as the poor soul tries to close the pop-up, as David so eloquently explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>That image is spiritual destruction<\/span><\/span>!!!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>An<\/span><\/span>yone who wants spirituality cannot ever take the risk that they will ever see such a thing\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u2013<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>not\u00a0<\/span><\/span>even once, even for one split second, even against their\u00a0<\/span><\/span>will<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0In one instant the mind is burned completely – and something burned completely, is completely lost…<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Even semi-filtered\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Internet<\/span><\/span>\u00a0like\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Rimon<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in Israel, or self-controlled filters like\u00a0<\/span><\/span>OpenDNS<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>are<\/span><\/span>\u00a0still dangerous, because it is far too easy to get into muddy water if you don’t use the filter at its highest and know what you are doing to protect yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Even worse, many filters are far too easy to get around.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Only the top filters with approval from the Rabbinic Councils that deal with communication is allowed, because those aren’t normal filters hoping to catch\u00a0<\/span><\/span>everything<\/span><\/span>. It was explained to me once by a tech guy<\/span><\/span>\u00a0who works at\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Netvision<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Kosher\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Internet<\/span><\/span>: “With\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Rimon<\/span><\/span>\u00a0(the basic filter)<\/span><\/span>, the question is<\/span><\/span>\u00a0– what is filtered?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0With Etrog (the higher level filter that is approved), everything is banned – the question is, what is allowed to get through the filter.” Even Google search is filtered.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

And I want you to know – even with top filters like Etrog, you can do everything you actually need to do. Banking, I look up recipes, Gmail, government websites, etc. Etc. I can do a Google search with no fear of getting results I don’t want to see.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0I can open my browser with no fear of pop-ups that destroy my life even as I try to close them.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0I watch Rabbi\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Arush\u2019s<\/span><\/span> live-streaming lesson every week, thank G-d. I still Skype with my family \u2013 and I put up with their complaints that I can\u2019t do Facetime, because it\u2019s worth my life and the life of my family.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

So, in response to David who pushes you to \u201cfight the good fight\u201d \u2013 my response is:\u00a0<\/span><\/span>GET OUT OF THE WAR.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

You cannot win\u00a0<\/span><\/span>this war<\/span><\/span>! And every loss is a loss of the most important thing you have \u2013 your mind<\/span><\/span>, your holiness, your purity, your family, your relationship to Hashem<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The stakes are simply too high.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Get yourself onto one of the approved\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Internet<\/span><\/span>\u00a0filters \u2013 Etrog,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Netiv<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Netfree<\/span><\/span>\u00a0– NOW<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Netiv<\/span><\/span>\u00a0is even in the US!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>At the very least, pray about it, and ask Hashem to show you what to do, and reconsider your usage in terms of both content and time.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

You might think that it’s i<\/span><\/span>mpossible;<\/span><\/span>\u00a0you can’t live without Facebook, or\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Whats<\/span><\/span>A<\/span><\/span>pp<\/span><\/span>, or Instagram, or\u00a0<\/span><\/span>You<\/span><\/span>T<\/span><\/span>ube<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>But when you disconnect from it, within an incredibly short time you’ll be thinking “How did I live that way? Finally, NOW I am beginning to really live!<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Needless to say, not only will you personally benefit, but you’ll be saving your relationship and your kids as well…<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
