A couple\u00a0<\/span><\/span>came to see me<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>whose son<\/span><\/span>\u00a0had unfortunately left the path of the Torah<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>They<\/span><\/span>\u00a0were broken to pieces. They\u00a0<\/span><\/span>explained to me how they were trying to cope with the situation.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>On\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>one hand<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>they\u00a0<\/span><\/span>would argu<\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span>\u00a0with their son,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>while simultaneously\u00a0<\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span>ry<\/span><\/span>ing stir him<\/span><\/span>\u00a0with feelings of guilt and remorse: \u201cHow much\u00a0<\/span><\/span>have\u00a0<\/span><\/span>we\u00a0<\/span><\/span>invested in you, how much\u00a0<\/span><\/span>have\u00a0<\/span><\/span>we\u00a0<\/span><\/span>given to you<\/span><\/span>\u00a0–\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>are\u00a0<\/span><\/span>betraying us<\/span><\/span>\u00a0in return!<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0They\u00a0<\/span><\/span>tried<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to show him how much his smartphone is ruining his life, but as much<\/span><\/span>\u00a0as they tried<\/span><\/span>, he\u00a0<\/span><\/span>just\u00a0<\/span><\/span>didn\u2019t<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>understand<\/span><\/span>\u00a0what\u00a0<\/span><\/span>they want from him. It seems to him<\/span><\/span>\u00a0that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>his life is great, and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0only real problem in his life are his parents!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I\u00a0<\/span><\/span>assume that<\/span><\/span>\u00a0you\u00a0<\/span><\/span>already\u00a0<\/span><\/span>figured out<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>that their methods did not exa<\/span><\/span>ctly help. The parents<\/span><\/span>\u00a0are on one wavelength,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and their son is on a completely different wavelength<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>It might not\u00a0<\/span><\/span>have\u00a0<\/span><\/span>be<\/span><\/span>en<\/span><\/span>\u00a0so bad if their efforts simply did zero. T<\/span><\/span>he problem is that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>their attempts to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>sway<\/span><\/span>\u00a0their son\u00a0<\/span><\/span>only angered him more, and created<\/span><\/span>\u00a0more distance between<\/span><\/span>\u00a0them<\/span><\/span>. Not to mention\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the emotional\u00a0<\/span><\/span>state of the parents<\/span><\/span>, which only continue<\/span><\/span>d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to worsen with every confrontation<\/span><\/span>. They\u00a0<\/span><\/span>just\u00a0<\/span><\/span>became<\/span><\/span>\u00a0more\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and more\u00a0<\/span><\/span>upset<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>every\u00a0<\/span><\/span>day<\/span><\/span>, undermining both\u00a0<\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span>heir physical and mental health<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Get to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>K<\/span><\/span>now\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Y<\/span><\/span>ourself – Get to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>K<\/span><\/span>now\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Y<\/span><\/span>our\u00a0<\/span><\/span>C<\/span><\/span>hild<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

W<\/span><\/span>e all have<\/span><\/span>\u00a0an\u00a0<\/span><\/span>E<\/span><\/span>vil\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I<\/span><\/span>nclination.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The question is: What do we do with it?\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

How do you look at yourself, and deal with your mistakes and failings? If you\u00a0<\/span><\/span>persecute yourself and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>say to yourself things like,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201cI\u00a0<\/span><\/span>can\u2019t do it.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I a<\/span><\/span>m weak<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I am bad<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0If you speak this way to yourself,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>then\u00a0<\/span><\/span>this is exactly how you will relate\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to<\/span><\/span>\u00a0your children!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>In fact, you will see them in a much worse light th<\/span><\/span>a<\/span><\/span>n yourself, because\u00a0<\/span><\/span>you will take out all your inner frustrations with yourself onto them!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

If you, as an\u00a0<\/span><\/span>adult<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>are still somehow s<\/span><\/span>urviving and continuing with life and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>trying to serve Hashem<\/span><\/span>\u00a0despite the heavy burden of guilt you take on yourself\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u2013<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>understand that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>for you<\/span><\/span>r children it is far too much –\u00a0<\/span><\/span>they are\u00a0<\/span><\/span>simply\u00a0<\/span><\/span>collapsing.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Missing Information\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

So, the first thing I did was\u00a0<\/span><\/span>talk<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to the parents about their own lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As funny a<\/span><\/span>s it may sound, one of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>facts\u00a0<\/span><\/span>that we really love to ignore is the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>recognition that we have an E<\/span><\/span>vil\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I<\/span><\/span>nclination. But what is even more concealed and hidden<\/span><\/span>, that most people<\/span><\/span>\u00a0do not know,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>is that we have NO power to defeat\u00a0<\/span><\/span>it<\/span><\/span>!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Yes,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>you read correctly.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>W<\/span><\/span>e cannot<\/span><\/span>\u00a0do it<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0The\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Gemara<\/span><\/span>\u00a0says this: “Unless Hashem helps<\/span><\/span>, he cannot overcome.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

You as parents\u00a0<\/span><\/span>deal with<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>E<\/span><\/span>vil\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I<\/span><\/span>nclination, but the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Gemara<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>explains that you can<\/span><\/span>not deal w<\/span><\/span>ith it alone<\/span><\/span>. Therefore, what is required\u00a0<\/span><\/span>is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>take time\u00a0<\/span><\/span>out\u00a0<\/span><\/span>each day to ask for help from<\/span><\/span>\u00a0G-d like this<\/span><\/span>: \u201cHe<\/span><\/span>lp me! I cannot do this alone! I cannot beat the Evil Inclination without You!<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Without prayer you have no strength to resist the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>E<\/span><\/span>vil\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I<\/span><\/span>nclination. If<\/span><\/span>\u00a0this is so<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>then\u00a0<\/span><\/span>without prayer you really have no\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Good Inclination (<\/span><\/span>Y<\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span>tzer<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>T<\/span><\/span>ov<\/span><\/span>)<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>If you do not pray \u2013 you<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>are in essence<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>surrendering to the E<\/span><\/span>vil\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I<\/span><\/span>nclination<\/span><\/span>!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The requirement to pray<\/span><\/span>\u00a0is the practical conclusion\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the words of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>that<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Gemara<\/span><\/span>, which teaches us to understand that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>we all have a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Y<\/span><\/span>etzer<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>H<\/span><\/span>ara<\/span><\/span>\u00a0that we cannot deal with\u00a0<\/span><\/span>alone.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Educati<\/span><\/span>on is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Giving<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Your son also faces the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Y<\/span><\/span>etzer<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>H<\/span><\/span>ara<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u2013 but he does not know how to pray. Therefore, he does not really have a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Y<\/span><\/span>etzer<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>T<\/span><\/span>ov<\/span><\/span>. If you want him to start praying for himself<\/span><\/span>, then before anything you\u00a0<\/span><\/span>first need\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>learn how to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>pray\u00a0<\/span><\/span>for yourself –\u00a0<\/span><\/span>because you are in exactly the same situation as him<\/span><\/span>. You too have an\u00a0<\/span><\/span>E<\/span><\/span>vil\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I<\/span><\/span>nclination that you cannot\u00a0<\/span><\/span>manage\u00a0<\/span><\/span>without prayer. What\u00a0<\/span><\/span>claim<\/span><\/span>\u00a0can you make against him if you do not\u00a0<\/span><\/span>yourself<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>pray<\/span><\/span>? You yours<\/span><\/span>elf\u00a0<\/span><\/span>don\u2019t have a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Y<\/span><\/span>etzer<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>T<\/span><\/span>ov<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>because\u00a0<\/span><\/span>you don\u2019t pray, so what do you want from the child?\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

If you sincerely want to teach him to start praying for himself – then\u00a0<\/span><\/span>certain<\/span><\/span>ly<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>you need to pray for your<\/span><\/span>self first.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>E<\/span><\/span>ducation is not\u00a0<\/span><\/span>about\u00a0<\/span><\/span>“principl<\/span><\/span>es”<\/span><\/span>\u00a0–<\/span><\/span>\u00a0education is giving! You can only give what\u00a0<\/span><\/span>you have<\/span><\/span>. If you live<\/span><\/span>\u00a0prayer<\/span><\/span>, and live pleading\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>beseeching<\/span><\/span>\u00a0G-d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to save you from your\u00a0<\/span><\/span>E<\/span><\/span>vil\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I<\/span><\/span>nclination\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u2013<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>only\u00a0<\/span><\/span>then\u00a0<\/span><\/span>can\u00a0<\/span><\/span>you\u00a0<\/span><\/span>pass this on to your child as well.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0And you can pass it on easily!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Real Problem \u2013 and Solution \u2013 is in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>You<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

If there<\/span><\/span>\u00a0is a problem with your car, you take the car to the garage and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0fix\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the problem. But\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a<\/span><\/span>\u00a0child is not a car.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Your\u00a0<\/span><\/span>child is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a part of you.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Whenever you are dealing\u00a0<\/span><\/span>with your children, remember ve<\/span><\/span>ry well,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>that whatever you are dealing with is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>primarily for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>G-d loves you and sends you messages through your children, and their actions and mistakes, in order to enable you to grow. He sends you situations through your children to encourage you to pray, and work on yourselves.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Forget the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>problems\u00a0<\/span><\/span>you have with the child\u00a0<\/span><\/span>completely and start\u00a0<\/span><\/span>working<\/span><\/span>\u00a0on<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>your<\/span><\/span>self\u00a0 in<\/span><\/span>\u00a0 prayer<\/span><\/span>\u00a0 every day<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>This is the miracle advice that works wonders!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Without you starting to work on yourself<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>– whatever you do will not help<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Helping Children<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Now that you are heading\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in the right direction,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>we can also look at how to help\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the child as well.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

W<\/span><\/span>e have here a child who has an E<\/span><\/span>vil\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I<\/span><\/span>nclination that he cannot resist.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>He cannot\u00a0<\/span><\/span>even pray to Hashem “save me, help me<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>“<\/span><\/span>\u00a0because he feels that what he is doing is good and pleasant for him<\/span><\/span>. He thinks\u00a0<\/span><\/span>that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the E<\/span><\/span>vil\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Inclination and it<\/span><\/span>s urges are the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>good life.<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0So how will he pray for himself?\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But\u00a0<\/span><\/span>if he does not pray, who<\/span><\/span>\u00a0will pray for him?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>That is why both\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the father and mother<\/span><\/span>\u00a0must\u00a0<\/span><\/span>commit themselves<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to pray<\/span><\/span>\u00a0for\u00a0<\/span><\/span>their<\/span><\/span>\u00a0child every day that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>G-d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0should help\u00a0<\/span><\/span>their child<\/span><\/span>\u00a0overcome his\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Y<\/span><\/span>etzer<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>H<\/span><\/span>ara<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>You must\u00a0<\/span><\/span>pray for each and every child<\/span><\/span>\u00a0–<\/span><\/span>\u00a0not just for the children who are<\/span><\/span>\u00a0already rebelling or having problems<\/span><\/span>\u00a0–<\/span><\/span>\u00a0because eve<\/span><\/span>ryone has an E<\/span><\/span>vil\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I<\/span><\/span>nclination and everyone needs the help of Hashem<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>without exception<\/span><\/span>. The only difference is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>that one child is already not willing to listen, versus if a child is still on track, then you can speak to him about prayer and teach him to pray for himself, which is a huge gain.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Double Challenge<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

You as an adult already\u00a0<\/span><\/span>recognize that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>E<\/span><\/span>vil\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I<\/span><\/span>nclination is bad<\/span><\/span>, and you don\u2019t want to follow after it. And still, you\u00a0<\/span><\/span>have to shout out to Hashem and beg for help<\/span><\/span>! All the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>more so the child<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0who\u00a0<\/span><\/span>does not yet understand that the bad is really\u00a0<\/span><\/span>is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>actually\u00a0<\/span><\/span>bad<\/span><\/span>. A child\u00a0<\/span><\/span>doesn\u2019t have the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>ability<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to distinguish between what is good and bad. He thinks bad is good.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Before anything else he first n<\/span><\/span>eeds knowledge and understanding, and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0only afterwards does he need help.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Therefore,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>we have to pray for our children in TWO ways<\/span><\/span>!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

First, w<\/span><\/span>e have to ask Hashem to give\u00a0<\/span><\/span>our children\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the wisdom to distinguish between good and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>evil, and to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>desire\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>good and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>develop a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>distaste for\u00a0<\/span><\/span>bad<\/span><\/span>. Second, we have to also beg for D<\/span><\/span>ivine assistance<\/span><\/span>\u00a0for our children to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>have the strength to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>actually do\u00a0<\/span><\/span>good<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and avoid evil. It’s not easy at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>This is why both parents must pray every day for their children.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Until\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The Very<\/span><\/span>\u00a0E<\/span><\/span>nd<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Technically, you only have to continue praying like this until your children are praying for themselves every day. At least then, they have a real desire for good, plus\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Divine<\/span><\/span>\u00a0assistance to help them achieve their good desires and save them from the Evil Inclination.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

However, I believe that parents should\u00a0<\/span><\/span>always pray for their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren!
