You know that classic game for kids, the one with a box that has cut-out shapes on the sides and the object of the game is to fit the right piece into the matching hole?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Circles into circles, triangles into triangles, stars into stars?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Well, I was playing that game with my one-and-a-half-year-old son, Shalom, the other day.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>At first we had a good thing going: he would pick up a shape, try to put it into a hole, and after it didn\u2019t work, I would rotate the box so that the matching cut-out was directly in front of his hand.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>He would then push the shape with ease through the hole and gleefully cheer for himself. It was big smiles and lots of excitement, shape after shape, until he picked up the last piece.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I saw that mischievous look in his eye as he reached for the square.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>At first, he tried stuffing it into the star cut-out. I knew I had to turn the box to make it work, but he would have none of that.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>He wanted to do it himself. He held the box still with one hand<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and fiercely tried to force the square shape into the star hole with the other.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Seeing his frustration, I tried once again to rotate the box but he snapped with a loud\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>NO!<\/span><\/span>\u201d.<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span>
\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Suddenly, like a sneak<\/span><\/span>y thief – or defiant toddler –\u00a0<\/span><\/span>he lifted the lid and dropped the square piece into the box.\u202fGame over.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Job well done!\u202fOr was it?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

He certainly seemed satisfied and ready to move on.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I, on the other hand, sat dumbfounded on the floor, holding a child\u2019s toy that had opened a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Pandora\u2019s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0box<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

How could my son give up so easily, I wondered?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Yes, he accomplished the job of putting the other shapes into their proper slots with my help<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0but why this time did he give up and bypass the process? Why did he suddenly take the short cut? Did his sly little move mean he might grow up to be a lazy adult, a copout, or a cheat? Or, was I looking at it backwards, and was he already on the road to becoming a brilliant problem solver?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span>
\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

While impressed that he discovered a clever short cut, I felt dismayed.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0My son had taken the low road, the cheap way out. And he was declaring victory.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>No way!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I\u00a0<\/span><\/span>snarked<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span>
\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Is everything about the end result? Reaching the finish line? What about the journey itself, the process, the moral choices, how we conduct ourselves along the way?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>What is the \u201cfinal destination\u201d anyway?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Watching Shalom drift off toward the trains,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I began to think about all the times I played this game with my other children over the years, my life path, my choices,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the big changes I\u2019ve made.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

After our recent cross-country move and the closing down of my business, I found myself in a new state<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0in a new community, struggling with an erosion of identity and trying to figure out what shape I am now, where I belong, and how I fit in.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Basically, who am I?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span>
\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I had always been the Orthodox\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Taekwondo master<\/span><\/span><\/a>, the athlete, the fitness trainer, the yoga instructor, the writer, the kale-<\/span><\/span>slurpee<\/span><\/span>\u00a0creator, the one who gives birth at home and buries her placentas in the backyard.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I still feel that person in me, but the image is receding and I feel myself evolving and changing shape, re-aligning around the edges. Try as I might, I no longer fit into the cozy cut-out that once comfortably fit and proclaimed my identity.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span>
\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I sometimes feel like Shalom, trying to shove a circle into a diamond shape.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Trial and error, over and over. I understand his frustration. I too want a short cut.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I too want to blow the lid off the box, jump in and have my destiny reveal itself.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But why would there be so many distinctly shaped entry ways if the game is just to bypass them all and barrel in through a trapdoor that is indifferent to individuality?\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span>
\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

New circumstances, new friendships, new approaches in my business are testing me. As I follow the call to explore new terrain in my career, to pursue deeper\u00a0<\/span><\/span>layers of my unfolding dreams, this child\u2019s game reminded<\/span><\/span>\u00a0me that each unique path is a rite of passage and a portal to self-discovery, with potential risks of failure and exhilarating rewards of success.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span>
\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I yearn to arrive at my new destination, to find my way into the box of shapes, confident, distinct and clear.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>With God\u2019s help I will continue to search for my new path, until my evolved\u00a0<\/span><\/span>form<\/span><\/span>\u00a0fits seamlessly through.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cStay true to yourself,\u201d I say to Shalom as I lift him up and give him a kiss, hoping to myself he\u2019ll discover that life is too interesting to take the easy way out.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u201cThanks for the inspiration. Let\u2019s play this game again tomorrow.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
