How does one merit a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>child like<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Shmuel<\/span><\/span>\u00a0(Samuel)<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>the Prophet? During the days of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Shmuel\u202f<\/span><\/span>the Prophet when they suffered from wars with the Philistines, a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Bat\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Kol<\/span><\/span>\u00a0(voice from H<\/span><\/span>eaven) called out, “A son will be born. His name will be Shmuel and he will save Israel from the Philistines.”\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

All the mothers prayed that they would\u00a0<\/span><\/span>be the one to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>have a son\u00a0<\/span><\/span>that would<\/span><\/span>\u00a0save Israel, but only\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Channa<\/span><\/span>\u00a0managed to convince the Creator.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Channa<\/span><\/span> was barren and had no <\/span><\/span><\/span>hope to ever have<\/span><\/span>\u00a0children, but she succeeded in persuading\u00a0<\/span><\/span>G-d<\/span><\/span>, as it is written: She prayed that the Creator should have a child who would bring gratification and who would be the messenger to help the nation of Israel.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Channa<\/span><\/span>\u00a0stood and prayed,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>“Give me a son to fight the Phil<\/span><\/span>istines and he will save Israel.<\/span><\/span>“<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Eli the High Priest did not understand how\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Channa<\/span><\/span>\u00a0was praying. He asked Hashem<\/span><\/span>\u00a0by means of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Urim<\/span><\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Tumim<\/span><\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/em>(Breastplate of the High Priest).<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Hashem answered Eli, “Her prayer is fitting and she will be saved\u00a0<\/span><\/span>with<\/span><\/span> a son who will enlighten the world and save My people from the hands of the Philistines.”<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

What is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Channa\u2019s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0secret that only she from all the mothers merited\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Shmuel\u202f<\/span><\/span>the Prophet?\u202fBecause\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Channa<\/span><\/span>\u00a0gave her son to God rather than use\u00a0<\/span><\/span>him<\/span><\/span>\u00a0for her personal needs.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0She promised G-d that if He would give her a son, she would dedicate that son only to His service.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>
\u00a0<\/span><\/span>
Shmuel\u202f<\/span><\/span>the Prophet was born, and at the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0tender age\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of three\u00a0<\/span><\/span>was brought to the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Mishkan<\/span><\/span> and to<\/span><\/span> Eli the High Priest who would be his\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Rav<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Shmuel\u202f<\/span><\/span>is on par with Moses and Aaron as the verse states: “Moses and Aaron were among His priests, and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Shmuel\u202f<\/span><\/span>among those who invoke His Name<\/span><\/span>” (Psalms<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a099:6).<\/span><\/span>\u00a0He anointed both\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Shaul<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and David as King of Israel.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Shmuel the Prophet died on the 28th (or the 29th) of Iyar and is buried in Ramah, Israel. He is called<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>Guardian of the City<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0because he is buried near the northern entrance of Jerusalem<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>T<\/span><\/span>hus<\/span><\/span> it is no coincidence that his\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>yahrtzeit<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>(anniversary of his passing) <\/span><\/span>falls on Yom <\/em><\/span><\/span>Yerushalayim<\/span><\/span><\/em>\u00a0(Jerusalem Day), the day when Jerusalem was reunited and the State of Israel reclaimed the Western Wall<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>On his\u00a0<\/span><\/span>yartzheit<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>besides going to the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Kotel<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and the other festivities around the city,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>many go to his grave site and pray for mercy. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Rabbi\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Arush<\/span><\/span> says that all the prayers said at his grave site go straight to Heaven, and that the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Shechina<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>always rests not only where he is buried, but on the entire hill surrounding\u00a0<\/span><\/span>him<\/span><\/span>. For this reason, many people go to Shmuel\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Hanavi<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to do personal prayer.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>During the Corona crisis when people were not allowed to l<\/span><\/span>ea<\/span><\/span>ve their city and Rabbi\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Arush<\/span><\/span>\u00a0could not get to his usual forest somewhere between Jerusalem and Bet\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Shemesh<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to do\u00a0<\/span><\/span>hitbodedut<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Rabbi\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Arush<\/span><\/span> went early every morning to Shmuel\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Hanavi<\/span><\/span>\u00a0instead.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
