Dog breeders are navigating more complexity than ever before. Growing demand for puppies, evolving regulations and higher expectations from pet owners. Today’s breeders are expected to meet high standards, all while staying true to the values that brought them into this work in the first place.

At Breedera, we know our community is committed to doing things right. We’re always paying close attention to what’s happening in the wider pet care industry, and we’re thrilled to be included in a recent article from Purina’s Unleashed:
Breeding in Europe: The Good, The Bad and the Technology.

The piece offers insights into the challenges and opportunities facing breeders across the continent, from regulation and verification to technology’s growing role in supporting responsible practices.

Below is our take on the key findings from Purina’s report.

Dog breeding in Europe in 2025

According to Purina’s overview, the breeding landscape across Europe is becoming more digitised, regulated and quality-focused.
Some of the key takeaways include:

Transparency is no longer optional

Regulatory bodies and online marketplaces alike are pushing for clearer documentation, ID verification, and traceable records from breeders. And this is often linked directly to microchipping and licensing data.

Digital platforms are on the rise

As pet ownership increases, so does the need for smarter tools. Tech solutions are helping breeders stay compliant, match puppies to suitable homes and prove the health and heritage of their litters.

As an Unleashed by Purina Alum, Breedera Founder Mike White gave his insights on tech adoption in the breeding space:
“Responsible breeding is something that people train their whole lives to do. It comes with experience. That experience is now being passed down to the tech-ready generation. Things are changing.”

Breeder trust is a market priority

Whether it’s local councils, licensing authorities, or puppy buyers, all stakeholders are seeking ways to ensure breeders operate ethically and with care.

“It’s a slight exaggeration, but everybody loves dog breeds, but everybody hates breeders. But if there were no breeders in the world, every dog would be a mixed breed. Breeders have so much influence on new owners and directly influence the health outcomes of the puppies. I think that more pet companies need to appreciate the power of breeders,” Mike told Purina.

These trends point to one thing: breeders who want to protect their reputation and simplify their workflow need tools that can keep up.

How Breedera’s technology supports responsible breeding

Breedera helps you stay focused on the wellbeing of your dogs, without getting lost in paperwork or disconnected systems.

The app brings together everything breeders need – from health records and mating logs to pregnancy countdowns and waitlist tracking – all in one secure place.

This not only saves time but also ensures that accurate and accessible records support every decision.

With tools that adapt to each stage of the breeding journey, Breedera gives breeders the confidence to stay compliant, stay organised and continue setting high standards, not just for their litters, but for the future of responsible breeding.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="500" class="gb-image gb-image-b0095689" src="https://breedera.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Breedera-FB-Banner-4.png" alt="Breedera Banner: Calming the chaos of breeder life.

It’s clear from Purina’s research that the breeding world is changing. Breeders, pet owners, and policymakers alike are calling for better practices, greater accountability, and higher standards of care.

But for those who are already doing things the right way – the dedicated, experienced breeders who lead with their hearts – these changes shouldn’t be a burden, they’re an opportunity.

With the right tools in hand, the future of ethical breeding can be even more rewarding.

See how Breedera can support your breeding journey – download the app and get started today.

Spring is the perfect time for a fresh start, you’re full of ambition, motivation and new ideas. So, getting your dog breeding records in shape is always advisable to hit the ground running. Whether you’re a seasoned breeder or just starting with your first litter, a little effort with your records in spring helps you avoid a lot of hassle later.

A well-organised record-keeping system makes tracking vaccination schedules, heat cycles and buyer contacts easy. With Breedera, this process becomes a smoother experience, as everything is conveniently stored in one easy-to-reach spot whenever you need it. Say goodbye to paperwork, streamline your breeding administration and devote your time to what truly matters – your dogs!

What is your current dog breeding record-keeping system?

Before you start organising, take a moment to reflect on your current system. Are you relying on paper logs, spreadsheets, or a hodgepodge of scattered notes?

These methods can often create unnecessary inefficiencies, lead to misplaced records, and add extra stress to your day, not to mention the potential for errors.

Missing vaccinations, unrecorded heat cycles, misplaced puppy contracts, or outdated buyer information can throw a wrench into your plans.

But there’s a better way.

Keep all your breeder records in one place with Breedera.

Simplify your breeding records with Breedera

With Breedera, it can take as little as 30 minutes to get your records in order and your breeding season under control.

Free Plan: you can log heat cycles, whelp dates, and mating records and track puppy growth in one place. Stay organised with unlimited dog and litter profiles, plus export and share key data effortlessly. You have the power to manage your breeding program with confidence and ease.

Upgrade to the Complete Plan (£9.99/month) for even more control. Record vaccinations, treatments, and feeding routines, and securely store essential certificates for responsible breeding.

Step-by-step guide to organising your breeder records this spring

Spring cleaning isn’t just for your home. Dust off your breeding records in just a few steps.

Gather all your existing records

Start by collecting all relevant documents, such as our suggestions below. Having everything in one place will help you identify gaps and outdated information:

Vaccination logs

Heat cycle records

Stud contracts

Litter details

Buyer contacts

Digitise and centralise with Breedera

Moving your records to a digital platform ensures security, accessibility and efficiency. Breedera helps by:

Providing secure cloud backups so you never lose crucial information

Allowing instant access from any device

Reducing time spent on admin so you can focus on your dogs

Review and update outdated information

Now that everything is in one place review each record carefully:

Ensure health records and vaccination logs are up to date

Log recent heat cycles and upcoming breedings

Double-check buyer contracts and contact details

For breeders who need to log records for licensing compliance, Breedera simplifies the process: Breedera Paperwork Comparison.

It only takes 30 minutes to get started

Now is the time to refresh your breeder records. Set aside 30 minutes this week to organise your files using Breedera. If you already use Breedera, log in and update your records for one less job hanging over your head. If you are new to Breedera, download the app and simplify your breeder admin today.

Spring is about fresh starts, make sure your records reflect that!

At Breedera, we’re always working to make your experience as smooth and efficient as possible. That’s why we’re excited to announce a new feature: Auto suggestions for breeds!

This latest update simplifies the process of adding a new dog to your records by providing intelligent breed suggestions as you type.

Whether you’re managing breeding records, tracking litter growth, or just keeping your dogs organised, this new feature makes your life easier while giving you the freedom to work your way.

What’s new?

Intelligent breed suggestions

When you begin typing a breed name, you’ll see a dropdown of suggested breeds based on what you type. Simply select the correct breed from the list.

Freedom to customise

Prefer to type in your own breed name?

No problem! You still have the flexibility to enter any breed, ensuring that the feature adapts to your needs rather than restricting you.

Why Auto Suggestions?

We know that time is precious for busy breeders.

Auto suggestions for breeds:

Saves time

Quickly find and select the correct breed without typing the entire name.

Reduces errors

Avoid typos or inconsistencies in breed names for more accurate records.

Maintains flexibility

Enjoy the best of both worlds by choosing from suggestions or typing freely.

With 2025 around the corner, even seasoned breeders can benefit from refining their processes and embracing new tools to stay on top of the demands of responsible breeding.

At Breedera, we know how much you juggle; heat cycles, whelping schedules, buyer communications and – most importantly – your dogs’ health and wellbeing.

That’s why we’re here to help you save time on your admin and do more of what you love.

Let’s dive in and see how you can get organised as a dog breeder for 2025.

Review and refresh your records

Accurate and detailed records are the backbone of any successful breeding program.

The start of a new year gives you the perfect opportunity to get organised and up to date with your paperwork.

Audit your current records

Take some time to assess your dog breeding records.

Are they complete, up-to-date and easy to access?

Has it been difficult to stay on top of your dog breeder paperwork this year? It may be time to look at a new way of record keeping.

Relook at your processes

Centralising all your information – health tests, pedigrees, vaccination schedules, buyer details, weights, feeds and more – in one place could save you hours of admin time in the new year.

With Breedera, record keeping is simple and rewarding. The app allows you to manage your entire breeding program digitally and securely.

Plan for compliance

Double-check that your documentation meets local regulations.

Legislation and licensing varies from region to region, but you can stay up to date by:

Reaching out to your local authorities

Engaging with professional breeding associations

Stay ahead of key dates

Time management can make or break your breeding season. Stay ahead of key dates with the following tips:

Heat cycles and pairing plans

Track heat cycles and plan your pairings well in advance. This ensues you’re not scrambling when it’s time to act.

Whelping and puppy care

Set reminders for important milestones, such as due dates, worming schedules and vaccination appointments.

A reliable calendar can save you stress and keep your program running smoothly.

Buyer communication

If you have a waiting list, start engaging with buyers early.

The new year is a perfect time to speak with potential puppy families who have been on your waiting list and get them excited about the new litters you have planned.

With Breedera, you never miss an important date:

Estimate and track heat cycles

Record stud dog details

Create detailed records of matings and ties

Get notifications of key milestones

Log vaccinations and treatments

Countdown to whelp dates

Streamline your daily to-do list

As a seasoned breeder, you know the volume of tasks it takes to run a program. This year is the year that you make those tasks more manageable.

Embrace checklists

Create task lists for each stage of breeding – from pre-breeding preparations to puppy handover. Having a clear plan ensures consistency and frees up your mental bandwidth.

Automate routine jobs

After you have created your checklists, see if there are any parts of your jobs that can be automated.

For example, in the Breedera app, you can quickly generate weight charts and puppy health reports and share with buyers and vets within just a few taps, saving you hours of time.

Delegate, delegate, delegate

Writing down your processes can also help with delegating tasks, if you’re privileged enough to have an extra pair of hands.

This will look different for different breeding programs, but it could be as simple as sharing the load with a family member, or hiring a bookkeeper.

Remember, with Breedera, you can set up regular feeding routines that can be quickly and easily shared with a trusted person.

Prioritise your dogs’ wellbeing

Breeding success starts with healthy, happy dogs.

Reassess health practices

As a responsible breeder, we’re sure you already prioritise your dogs’ health and wellbeing. But, the new year is a great time to plan ahead when it comes to planning genetic testing, vaccinations and veterinary care.

Are you keeping up with the latest recommendations?

Investing in these areas ensures you’re producing happy, healthy puppies and also protect the health and welfare of your adult dogs.

Refine socialisation practices

Even if your socialisation process is strong, there’s always room for growth. Focus on creating well-rounded experiences for puppies to help them thrive in their future homes.

Researchers at Queen’s University Belfast and members of the Breedera Advisory Panel explore the socialisation techniques that breed confident, happy puppies.

Balance your commitments

Avoid overextending yourself.

Prioritising your dogs’ wellbeing sometimes means prioritising your own needs. Saying no to an extra litter or taking time to rest may really help you stay on top of things in the new year.

Level up buyer relationships

Great breeders don’t just sell puppies; they build lasting relationships with buyers.

Engage with buyers

Use social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram to share updates, celebrate milestones and showcase your program’s values.

With Breedera, you can instantly share puppy growth charts and key milestones with your followers.

Improve communications

Responding quickly and professionally to inquiries builds trust.

Check out our guide to breeder waitlist management here.

Provide value

Share helpful resources with buyers, such as training tips or breed care guides.

Our friends over at Pupstarts have a number of great resources.

Meanwhile, we frequently create guides for both breeders and new puppy owners:

Set goals for the new year

A fresh start to the year means a fresh approach to your breeding program.

Identify growth areas

Whether it’s improving your bloodlines, exploring a new breed or enhancing your whelping environment, decide where you’d like to improve and create a plan.

Prioritise balance

Set boundaries to protect your personal time. Lean on tools like Breedera to take some of the load off your shoulders, so you can enjoy more family time and recharge.

Celebrate your progress

Reflect on what you’ve achieved so far. Breeding is a labour of love, and it’s important to recognise the wins – big and small.

We’ll be celebrating 2024 over on our online community for dog breeders, come and share your achievements and goals for the new year.

As 2024 draws to a close, we’re taking a moment to reflect on what has been an incredible year for Breedera. Thanks to the support of our amazing community of dog breeders, partners and team members, we’ve reached some exciting milestones that have helped us grow and innovate.

Here’s a look back at out highlights over the last year:

Attending some of the biggest events in Pet Care and Tech

This year, we had the privilege of sharing our vision and expertise at some of the biggest events in pet care and technology.

Petcare Innovation Europe

Mike White, Breedera’s Founder and CEO took the stage to discuss how technology is shaping the future of breeding and pet care, as well as how responsible breeders are addressing the growing need for solutions to prevent pet abandonment. Read more about the event here.

Crufts 2024

Crufts is the world’s most iconic dog show.

This year, we were thrilled to be part of the action once again. From meeting breeders face-to-face to sharing how Breedera can make their lives easier, our time at Crufts is always unforgettable.

Catch our full recap here.

Leeds Digital Festival – PetTech

We were honored to speak about how Breedera uses cutting-edge technology to solve real-world problems for breeders as well as host a panel of animal care experts from Trakia University-Stara Zagora, alongside Sam Hoste from Quantech Solutions.

See the write-up.

Game-changing app improvements for dog breeders

We’re always working to make Breedera more intuitive, helpful, and aligned with breeders’ needs. In 2024, we introduced several updates that make managing your program easier than ever.

Log dog breeding records even faster

We streamlined the process of adding dog records to the Breedera app, making it easier and quicker than ever. Now, all you need to provide is the name, breed, and sex of any new dog, and you can go back in later to add more details if you wish.

Filter and organise your dogs list

This new release allows breeders to organise and filter dogs with a few quick taps of your fingers. You can personalise your Dogs List with advanced filters, making it easier than ever to find exactly the information you need, when you need it.

Introducing Breedera Blueprint

This year also saw the launch of the Breedera Blueprint, giving our users a full breakdown of our latest feature releases, plus a sneak peek at what the future holds for Breedera.

Our community of dog breeders are the backbone of Breedera and have helped shape our technology from the very beginning. So, it’s important for us to keep you in the loop with what’s happening in the app and what you can look forward to.

Feeding your pregnant dog the right diet not only supports the mother’s well-being but also gives her puppies the best start in life.

Welcoming a new litter into the world is one of the most exciting milestones in a breeder’s journey, but ensuring a healthy start for both the mother and her puppies begins with proper nutrition.

In fact, studies show that malnutrition in pregnant dogs can lead to serious issues, such as neonatal mortality, which affects up to 20-30% of puppies.

Meanwhile, overfeeding increases the risk of obesity, causing complications like prolonged oestrus cycles, smaller litter sizes and a higher chance of difficult births.

In short, a healthy, balanced diet for pregnant dogs is essential to keep both mom and puppies thriving.

Keep reading for our guide on feeding your pregnant dog:

What is the best diet for a pregnant dog?

There is no one correct way to feed a pregnant dog. However, providing a high-quality, digestible and balanced diet is key.

Throughout her pregnancy, her nutritional needs may shift, so speaking with your veterinarian can help you find the right formula to keep her healthy and happy.

Is there special dog food for pregnant dogs?

Some dog food brands offer formulas specifically designed for pregnant dogs. If your dog already has a preferred brand, it’s worth checking to see if they provide a pregnancy-specific option.

However, always consult your vet to ensure any dietary shift meets her unique nutritional needs.

How do I feed a pregnant dog?

A pregnant dog’s dietary needs change throughout the different stages of her pregnancy.

Week 1-6: Maintain your pregnant dog’s ideal weight

When you first have confirmation that your bitch is pregnant and estimated her conception date, your aim for the next six weeks is to maintain her ideal weight.

Week 6-9: Transitioning to puppy formular

Around day 42 of her pregnancy, you’ll notice two important shifts in your dog’s needs:

Her energy and nutrient demands will start to rise – this is because her puppies are growing more rapidly.

As the puppies take up more space in her abdomen, she’ll have less room for food.

Around week six, it’s beneficial to transition her diet to a high-quality puppy formula, which is packed with extra nutrients to support both her and the growing puppies.

Gradually introduce the new food to her diet, mixing it with her current formula over a week to allow her digestive system to adjust.

Week 6-9: Increasing your dam’s food intake

When you’ve successfully transitioned her to puppy formular, it’s time to gradually increase portion sizes. A good guideline is to boost it by 10% each week as she approaches her due date.

Here’s a breakdown from The Kennel Club:

Tips for feeding a pregnant dog

Check your pregnant dog’s Body Condition Score (BCS)

Every pregnant dog is unique, and her body condition plays a big role in determining her nutritional needs during this special time. Regularly checking her Body Condition Score (BCS) helps you ensure she’s getting the right amount of food to stay strong and healthy as her pregnancy progresses.

If you’re not sure how to assess her BCS, don’t worry. Purina’s Body Condition System makes it easy to understand her condition and adjust her feeding plan accordingly. Periodic assessments provide valuable opportunities to fine-tune her diet, keeping her and her growing pups in optimal health.

By staying on top of her BCS, you’re giving her the best possible support for a healthy pregnancy and smooth delivery.

Track your pregnant dog’s food and diet

Log supplementary feeds and treatments.

Keep your pregnant dog well hydrated

Stay in touch with your vet

As always, we always recommend staying in touch with your vet and consulting them about any concerns such as weight loss or a persistent change in appetite.

FAQs about nutrition for pregnant dogs

Below we cover some of the most frequently asked questions about feeding your pregnant dam.

Should I feed my pregnant dog puppy food?

Puppy food is richer in key nutrients and provides more energy than adult-formula food. Plus, it’s easily digestible, making it ideal for pregnant dogs who need more energy to support their growing litter.

This nutrient boost is an important consideration when feeding pregnant dogs, especially as they move into the later stages of pregnancy.

What if my pregnant dog has a decreased appetite?

It’s normal for her appetite to fluctuate due to hormonal changes. However, if her appetite doesn’t return, consult your vet to rule out any underlying issues.

Can I feed my dog supplements during pregnancy?

Some supplements may be beneficial, but please consult your vet before adding anything to her diet to make sure it’s safe and effective.

Is it okay to give treats to a pregnant dog?

Treats are fine in moderation, but make sure they don’t interfere with her balanced diet.

Some UK breeders have recently received letters from HMRC requesting them to make “voluntary disclosures” of income from pet sales. The new “clampdown” aims to address unregulated breeding operations and ensure breeders are reporting their earnings accurately.

This guide helps you understand what this means for you as a breeder and gives tips on how to respond confidently.

About HMRC’s clampdown on dog breeding

You may have seen that breeders are receiving letters from HMRC about “voluntary disclosures”, or perhaps you’ve received one yourself.

With pet ownership growing in popularity, especially since the pandemic, HMRC is focusing its attention on dog and cat breeders to ensure fair and transparent income reporting.

The letters invite breeders to declare any unreported earnings from the sale of pets, and is part of a broader effort to ensure responsible breeding practices and improve animal welfare across the UK.

At Breedera, we understand that this kind of letter might cause concern, especially when your main focus is on your dogs’ wellbeing. But don’t worry, we’re here to walk you through what to expect, how to respond, and why it matters.

Phew!

If you receive a letter, it doesn’t mean you’re being targeted for wrongdoing – it’s just part of a broader check to make sure breeders are on the same page with tax regulations.

What is HMRC “Voluntary disclosure” for dog breeders?

Voluntary disclosure is a way to report any income from breeding that might have slipped through the cracks. Maybe you’re only selling a litter or two a year and didn’t think it would count – but HMRC is now asking all breeders with earnings over £1,000 (after expenses) to come forward.

By taking this step now, you’re showing HMRC that you’re responsible and proactive. It’s a way to build trust and keep things above board. Plus, making a voluntary disclosure now can help you avoid the more time-consuming and potentially costly path of a formal investigation down the road.

How to respond to HMRC as a dog breeder

Receiving a letter from HMRC doesn’t have to be stressful. Here’s a step-by-step plan to help you respond effectively.

Gather all your records

Review all your income and expenses related to your dog breeding activities, such as receipts, invoices and bank statements.

Consult a trusted accountant

An accountant familiar with small businesses can help you review your earnings and expenses to make sure everything is in order. Often, your first initial discussion is free, so it’s worth reaching out.

Consider registering for Self Assessment

You may have to declare income from the breeding or sale of animals if your sales exceed the tax-free trading allowance of £1,000 for a tax year. Some other factors also apply, including if you have any other taxable income.

Typically, the best way to declare this income is via Self Assessment.

If you’re not already registered for Self Assessment, now’s the time.

HMRC wants breeders to report income accurately and filing a Self-Assessment is a straightforward way to do it.

Here’s how to register for Self Assessment.

Different types of HMRC investigations

Not all HMRC enquiries are the same, so don’t let the thought of an investigation worry you too much. Here are the main types:

Voluntary disclosure

The most common and straightforward type, where you’re simply asked to report any unregistered income.

Voluntary disclosure is what is typically being asked of dog breeders in the UK right now.

Aspect enquiry

HMRC may ask questions about specific areas of your finances, such as a certain sale or expense.

Full enquiry

A full enquiry from HMRC is much less common and typically reserved for cases where HMRC believes there may be significant issues. With voluntary disclosure, you’re taking control and reducing the chance of this happening.

Phew!

Most breeders will only need to make a voluntary disclosure, which is quick, easy, and puts you on solid footing with HMRC.

Do dog breeders pay tax?

In short, yes, if you earn enough from sales.

All dog breeder’s must declare income earned from selling puppies if their total income exceeds £1,000 per year. HMRC considers this a trading activity, so it must be reported through Self Assessment.

However, the amount of tax you pay depends on different factors including:

how your breeding business is legally set up – i.e. Limited Company, Sole Trader etc

if you have any other taxable income

how much of your income is above your Personal Allowance

how much of your income falls within each tax band

You can get a full breakdown on the HMRC website or speak with an accountant about your personal situation.

HMRC tax deductions for dog breeders

Dog breeders can claim tax deductions for legitimate business expenses, such as:

Veterinary bills

Food and supplies*

Breeding registration fees

Advertising and marketing

Costs of maintaining breeding facilities

*Only applicable to spending above and beyond your normal expenses for keeping your dogs as pets. So, usually, this is reserved for puppy food for the litter or pregnancy-specific nutritional expenses.

Keep accurate records of all expenses to ensure compliance and maximise deductions.

With Breedera, you can keep an accurate record of all your dog breeding activity and expenses.

Simply snap your receipts and upload them to the Documents of any dog. The same can be done with your contracts of sale.

Breedera gives you peace of mind that all your essential breeding records, health history and buyer information are in one easy-to-access place.

Filter dogs by owner

For breeders who co-own dogs or need to log records about externally-owned stud dogs, the ability to filter by owner is a game-changer. Breedera allows you to instantly pull up a list of externally-owned dogs owned, or hide all externally owned dogs, leaving just the ones you own.

Filter dogs by breeding status

Whether you need to track which dogs are currently active in breeding or retired, the breeding status filter simplifies your day-to-day tasks. This makes it easier to manage breeding schedules and plan for future litters, ensuring no dog slips through the cracks.

Show/hide dogs in litters

As a breeder, it’s easy for your dog list to grow quickly, especially when managing both adult dogs and puppies. With the show/hide litters feature, you can choose to only display dogs that are relevant to your current situation, making your list more manageable.

Filter dogs by sex

Filtering by sex is particularly helpful during breeding planning. When you’re deciding which dogs to pair, this filter allows you to quickly pull up a list of males or females, so you can focus on the dogs that are potential matches for your breeding program.

Filter retired dogs

Your retired dogs are still part of your program’s history, but you don’t necessarily need them in your active dog list. The filter for retired dogs allows you to easily reference their information without mixing them up with your active breeders.

Filter deceased dogs

Losing a dog is never easy, but you may still need access to their records. With the new filter, you can hide deceased dogs from everyday viewing, but keep their records and their memory.

Filter archived dogs

If you no longer need to actively manage a dog’s profile but still want to keep their records, archive them. You can filter to show or hide archived dogs as needed, ensuring your list stays clean and up-to-date.
