Meanwhile I understood my own systems less every week and didn't even notice it happening. What changed it for me was flipping the order. Now I write out my logic first, then have AI poke holes in it. I make it argue against my design before I commit to anything. Same tool, completely different result. If you feel yourself getting dumber with AI, it might not be the tool. It might be the order of operations. #AIEngineering #ForwardDeployedEnigneer #padenbuilds

For me, this is one of them. ❤️ On the past month, I have celebrated the official completion of my transition to Software Development Manager at Amazon . This milestone is especially meaningful because it comes just a few weeks before my maternity leave 👩🍼.After spending nearly a year in the role—learning, making mistakes, growing, and building alongside so many incredible people—it was natural to have both excitement and uncertainty. Like many women have experienced at some point in their careers, I found myself wondering whether the timing of my maternity leave could influence such an important decision in my professional journey. That is why receiving this confirmation before my leave means so much to me. More than a title change, it represents the recognition of a journey built on dedication, continuous learning, and meaningful results delivered along the way. I am also grateful to be part of a company that values growth, impact, and potential regardless of where we are in life. As a woman in technology and someone preparing to become a mother for the second time, this achievement reinforced my belief in the importance of workplaces where motherhood and career growth are not seen as competing paths. None of this would have been possible without the people who were part of this journey. My sincere thanks to my manager, Carolina Moreira de Paula , my skip-level Felipe Pedrini , peers and everyone who trusted me and helped me grow throughout this process. Thank you for the feedback, the difficult conversations, the opportunities, and the confidence you placed in me. A special thank you to the team I had the privilege to lead during this period. Leadership is a two-way street. I learned just as much from you as I hope I contributed to your growth. People management has reconnected me with a part of my career that I had deeply missed. I have always enjoyed solving complex problems, building strategies, and driving execution, but there is something uniquely rewarding about helping people grow. Watching someone gain confidence, develop new skills, overcome challenges, and reach new milestones is one of the most fulfilling experiences in professional life. As I prepare to begin a new chapter with the arrival of my son, I am also beginning a new chapter in my career. I cannot help but reflect on how leadership and motherhood share many of the same values: listening carefully, learning continuously, developing others, building trust, and creating a positive impact on the people around us. Cassiano Bruno gostou dissoCassiano Bruno gostou dissoWe just wrapped our latest salary rebenchmarking at Buffer. Twice a year, we review market data to make sure we’re paying competitively. This cycle: → The average pay increase ranged from ~$1K to ~$6K depending on the role → The result was $235,215 in total salary increases This time, we also updated the benchmark we use for our Customer Advocacy team to better reflect how the role is evolving. Today, this team is increasingly building systems with AI, troubleshooting issues in our codebase, helping manage incidents, and most recently supporting our public API. As the role has evolved, we noticed the benchmark they were mapped to had been declining over the past year. Updating the benchmark resulted in an additional ~$49,000 annual investment in the team and meaningful salary increases that wouldn’t have happened otherwise. It's been almost three years since we shifted to a semi-annual cadence for rebenchmarking as a way to commit to our team that we’re serious about keeping pay aligned with the market. It’s quickly become one of my favorite recurring projects at Buffer. Both sit somewhere between a client and a service, manage traffic, and can handle authentication, routing, and observability. It's easy to think of both as the same kind of tool, or to reduce the difference to a simple rule of thumb. The truth is that those tools were built for different problems, and are not interchangeable. Here are 4 differences worth knowing: - deployment model: the gateway is a centralized component, the mesh is decentralized - OSI layer: the gateway is L7-only; the mesh works at both L4 and L7 - scope: the gateway handles how external clients interact with the system, the mesh manages inter-services communication - auth: the gateway focuses on external identity (OAuth2 tokens, JWTs, or API keys), the mesh on service identity (SPIFFE) The latest article of the Polymathic Engineer looks in depth at API gateways and service meshes side by side, explaining when to use which, and how they work together when used correctly. Me despeço com a sensação de dever cumprido e a gratidão por todo o aprendizado dessa jornada. Fui de engenheiro a manager nesse período, e o QuintoAndar foi a escola de grande parte do que carrego hoje — de boas práticas de programação a como ser um bom gestor de pessoas. Sou muito grato aos meus gestores que me acompanharam nessa trajetória: o Akira Suguinoshita, que me ensinou tudo que sei sobre ser um bom desenvolvedor e é um exemplo de gestão; o Leandro Doval e o Eizo Nishime, que me encaminharam na transição de carreira; e a Monique Vieira o Bruno Soares, que me ajudaram na passagem para senior manager e a me estabelecer no cargo. Sou grato também por todas as pessoas que liderei — que me ensinaram tanto — e espero também tê-las ajudado a se desenvolver, e aos pares de produto e design que tanto me ajudaram nessa jornada. Agora faço uma mudança de rota: deixo o cargo de gestão para trás e volto a uma paixão que nunca abandonei — desenvolver. Começo hoje na UME como Staff Engineer, muito empolgado tanto pelo propósito quanto pela cultura da empresa. Que venha essa nova fase!
