Fantasia! I will forever remember this night. Thank you so much to everyone who came to see our film. Watching it with a passionate, enthusiastic crowd was one of the most surreal, out-of-body experiences of my life. On to FrightFest!
Finally got to see why Chris Stuckmann stopped criticising anything and won’t shut up about how hard it is to make movies.
congrats to Chris Stuckmann for somehow crowdfunding millions of dollars to make what is basically, and I mean this as affectionately as possible, Alan Wake fan fiction
considering the fact that i'm a sucker for found footage subgenre, i genuinely adored the first 20 minutes of this & i firmly believe that this movie would've been sooo much better had the entire thing been in a faux documentary format.
unfortunately, i wasn't as engaged when it switched to the traditional filming style but the whole thing had a late 2000s/early 2010s horror feel to it which i'm obsessed with, so it's not a complete failure in my eyes!
Respect to Chris Stuckmann for making this, genuinely.
People in his circle and the general online criticism sphere appear to be treading lightly around this one, and understandably so, but I owe it to him to be real about my thoughts. Shelby Oaks is not a good movie.
A poorly calibrated balance of found footage and non-diegetic coverage leave this feeling like two long short films, slowly building up a mystery that amounts to nothing. The pieces don’t fit together, which one could look past if they were striving for anything substantive, but it’s like Stuckmann placed a giant “______” in his script where he intended to put the big payoff. Better movies have frustrated audiences on purpose by refusing…
B-movie blender of horror tropes done with style and energy. Nothing extraordinary, but a fun time at the movies, a few great suspense sequences, and a great opening sequence. There's a pretty bold formal decision made after the first 30 mins that got me excited for what ended up being a dumb jump-scare fest. I personally found the unpretentious style-over-substance quality refreshing in the face of trauma-obsessed "elevated" horror. Just a solid time at the movies.
Some more thoughts on Stuckmann and the broader discourse about "youtuber movies":

This is so hard to rate, because I admire everything about Chris Stuckmann. He’s inspired me every step of the way in my journey as a movie lover and content creator. I actually published my book with the same publisher as he did years ago! So I envy his success and I only hope I’m in this spot in 7-8 years myself.
That said, it’s spooky. It’s scary. It’s pretty effective. And I see that Chris loves horror movies - almost to a fault at times. I see a lot of other movies in this - Lake Mungo, The Taking of Deborah Logan, Hereditary - it is a bit of a love letter to recent horror classics, but it does do its own thing too!
For a first time effort, this is very solid. Good on you Chris!
