spent so much of this special thinking “goddamn bo is a good director” and then thinking “you know what, the editing’s really good as well. wonder who edited this” and lo and behold, bo’s a good editor too. never felt like i see comedy specials with standout shots aside from the ones i’ve seen bo direct for jerrod. this one’s got like three moments that made me whisper “wow” as of the material itself weren’t stunning enough. also the only instance in which comedy has been truly enhanced by unexpected audience interaction
anyway, who named this nigga, scooby doo???? just playing. jerrod is the best
Maybe the only time in history that encouraging the audience to talk back not only doesn't backfire, but actually makes things better. (Was this the best, most responsible crowd ever?)
Raw, emotional, yet never not a comedy special. Even once you figure out what the "closer" is gonna be, he still lands it. Excellent.
Is this stand-up? Is this comedy? Is this therapy? Is this just confessing all your personal demons to a crowd to entertain/interact with them? All of these answers are "yes."
Bo Burnham directs and edits the hell out the smallest moments here and Jerrod uses this room of people and his space on the stage so perfectly for this piece. This is the most beautiful thing so far in 2022. My heart is full.
I’ve always loved Jerrod because he’s more interested in asking questions of himself, the audience, or society rather than trying to be some sort of moral teacher. The amount of times he said “I don’t know” or the amount of areas that didn’t have a fine point of “This is the right way” was somehow both soothing and devastating.
Easily one of my favorite specials.
“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”
This entire special is Jerrod fulfilling God’s promise to his mother. I hope she understands that.
