couldn't find any lists focused on being both Black and Asian, most centre interracial relationships — as a triracial Afro-Asian person i hope this list can help others feel seen too <3
the list primarily features biracial Black Asians but generally includes Afro-Asian as well as underrepresented multiracial perspectives.
while Blasian or Afro-Asian usually refers to biracial people, personally I feel these terms can describe anybody who experiences being both Black and Asian, whether that’s related to geography, cultural context, being multiracial or a combination of that. It's often not binary and I’m not sure how useful the categorisations below are in the long run, especially as I don't know how the people in these films self-identify. But it’s my attempt to…

It's often not binary and I’m not sure how useful the categorisations below are in the long run, especially as I don't know how the people in these films self-identify. But it’s my attempt to address different experiences, and there will be some overlap between them anyway. Personally also don’t love terms like biracial, monoracial etc but I’m just using the language I have right now — overall I can imagine terminology in this list evolving over time!
BREAKDOWN (see notes!):
- BLASIAN — biracial Black Asian perspectives + those of Afro-Asian ethnic groups (e.g. Malagasy people)
- CULTURALLY AFRO-ASIAN — perspectives of Black or Asian people socialised/living in an Asian/Black context, either where they’re a racial minority or in countries where both groups are largely present/overlap. specifically interested in Black perspectives in this context (e.g. Nigerian-Japanese folks, interracial adoptees)
- MULTIRACIAL — other underrepresented multiracial perspectives (e.g. Afro-Indigenous, triracial ppl etc)
for a list specifically about West Papuans (Indigenous Black people whose land is being occupied by Indonesia) go here ←
includes both:
- films about these experiences or that at least explicitly name them (highlighted in notes)
- films with actors who are Blasian/multiracial where it's not part of the story
I’m not adding:
- people’s entire filmographies (but especially wanna highlight the films where they are in leading roles or were part of major films many people know!)
- perspectives of biracial people with a white parent (as they are the norm in multiracial representations)
CN: unfortunately some of these films reproduce racist stereotypes, especially anti-Blackness. I haven’t seen most of these yet so additional info/CNs are very welcome. and of course would love recs!! links to watch in the notes where available.
thank you to these lists which helped find some of the films here: feeling all mixed up | Blasian | Black Representations In Asian Cinema
