What many people don't pick up from First Man, is that it shows a double dynamic. Reaching the moon certainly did change human perspective (also for the good), and partly as a result we came to think of the earth, not as an infinite resource, but as an organism in which we are intertwined. I believe that reaching the moon did indirectly raise awareness of global warming, and man's influences upon it.
However, it was a ridiculous task to send man to a planet unknown, only with a few tests in space as preparation. Note, it wasn't humanity that set foot on the moon, but it was one man (and later a couple of others), Neil Armstrong. A single human isn't made for such an incredible leap into the unknown, and what it does to such a man isn't for the better. Besides the psychological downfall, of course the economic circumstances were neither in favour of the space program. First Man shows really well that it were indeed just children playing with enormous toys, trying to win a race with their neighours.
