The ideal movie is 90 minutes of two brunettes talking about their issues with their hot dumb husbands.
I’m a sucker for movies that reflect and dissect:
- the tedious complexities of relationships
- our dread of aging
- that panic that we are too inadequate for our dreams
You Hurt My Feelings tackles all three, to some varying degrees of success, but it’s so lighthearted and charming that I even if some of its themes aren’t entirely fleshed out, I found it impossible to not enjoy.
It takes a lot of skill and balance to build a succession of minor micro-moments (choices in words, changes in habits, etc), and not just observe them but make them feel like they sum up a lifetime of living/growing with someone. I don't think this nails all of them (the stuff with the son did very little for me) but the ones it gets right in the central relationship dynamic/performances have some emotional power. The kind of soft, mature, low-stakes romcom you don't see a whole lot of anymore. I'll take it.
YOU HURT MY FEELINGS is a well-written light comedy about the little & big lies we tell our loved ones thinking we’re being supportive instead of being honest. The comedic timing from Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tobias Menzies & the rest of the cast is flawless. A hilarious date movie that may or may not start fights.
The part where she goes to the bookstore and moves her book so it's on top of the more successful book? I would 100% do that
Well this just healed a little piece of me. I appreciate that Nicole Holofcener is illuminating the little hurts we may feel in everyday life. This story is genuinely helpful for reflecting on our expectations when we ask loved ones for feedback, and inversely, the role we have to nurture feelings versus deliver criticism. Every performance is pitch perfect and the humor was cathartic. A gem.
Saw this with my very-soon-to-be husband, who just put out a new book hehe. A lot of side glances and elbow jabs at each other <3
If I were 20 years older, in a higher tax bracket, drank wine, and actually had friends, I would tell them about this charming little film that I heard about on NPR. I'm not, so instead I'll say that You Hurt My Feelings was a film that I mildly chuckled at several times, was much more sincere than I was expecting, showed two people who genuinely loved each other and seemed like they actually wanted to spend time around their significant other, and go through a mild crisis when one spouse accidentally overhears the other's honest opinion.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus as novelist Beth and Tobias Menzies as therapist Don are usually the types of protagonists I dislike, affluent have it alls…
