Drunktown's Finest

Sydney Freeland's debut film is mostly a very nuanced and powerful experience. Native American and trans voices are both way too rare in cinema, so to get both in the same film is often a revelation. All three plotlines here have depth, warmth, and nuance, and by the end, the film had achieved a deep sense of emotional connectedness with each character that I won't soon forget.

There are a few really rough and extreme moments of transphobia that left a bitter taste in my mouth. The fact that most of Felixia's character arc is rooted in her feelings and experiences is revelatory, and the fact that her story was both depicted and performed by actual trans people is essential and sadly rare, but I do just have to mention that for other trans people, this may be a difficult watch.
